I am finding out that coaching is very much who you know and what contacts you have.

That is true as a HC is only s good as his assistants. Bad assistants will get you fired quickly
Unless you coach at Iowa. It does get you fired at ISU. Ask Dan McCarney. Marty Fine ruined him.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Barney Cotton was no help either

Cotton would have been alright as just an OL coach, but had no business whatsoever being the OC at a Division 1 school.

Wartburg sends 6 through to tomorrow's semis. Coe has 4.
so far 1 Knight continues in wrestle-backs, 2 to go.

All 9 Wartburg guys will be All-American.
Don't know the total scores yet, but I would imagine Wartburg already has the title wrapped up with a full day of wrestling still to come tomorrow.
As of the last update, Coe is in 2nd place.
LaCrosse close behind.

Yes, the Muskies have a new head coach.  It was in the paper today.  The AD introduced him to the team yesterday after the Journal went to press.

The new head Muskie is Tony Napierala.  He comes to Muscatine after spending the last eight years at Cherokee.  I don't know how good Cherokee has been over that period of time.  I haven't gone to the IHSAA web-site to check it out yet.  The newspaper does say he has run a similar no huddle spread offense.  Muskie fans love those Chinese fire drill plays with four or five wide outs going every which direction.  It sounds like we will probably continue to have games run late into the night.  Unfortuneately the Muskies generally finish so late they never make the Highlight Zone on channel 6.  It sure is entertaining.

I'm reading the article as I type.  I appears the man has a problem,  he went to Buena Vista.  Our Saturday morning coffee group has never had a BV fan.  We may need to take a vote tomorrow whether or not we invite him to join us.

I don't know how Cherokee has done in the W/L column over the past 8 years, but I know several years they have had the leading passer in the state.

BB & Walston Hoover:

I did a quick review of the IHSAA site.

Since 2001 Cherokee has been 30-33 in regular season games, with three winning record seasons ('03, '04, '06)

Since 2001 Muscatine has been 43-20 in the regular season games, with six winning record seasons ('01, '02, '03, '04, '06, '07)  The Muskies were playoff teams six times during that period.

I reviewed the individual passing records for games during that period.  The chart has games where the qb threw for more than 340 yards.  Cherokee had that happen 15 times combining records of two qb's.  Muscatine, during the same period, had this happen 9 times combining the records of three qb's (Stover, Durham, Phillips)

I don't know what all this proves other than this guy may be all right but he's no Thomas, Twait or Pedersen.  I do know Muskie fans have become spoiled, they want winning seasons and playoff games.  30-33 won't cut it.

I grew up in one of Cherokee's neighboring school districts and went to college less than a half hour down the road, so I'm pretty familiar with their football program.  Considering the talent pool available, 30-33 isn't too shabby.  They've had some really good QBs and WRs, but almost no one decent at RB or OL.  With more talent to work with, I wouldn't be surprised to see Napierala do quite well for Muscatine.

5 all-Americans, 4 semi-finalists and you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Love that Kohawk swagger!
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances

CK: I like to see the IIAC occupying 4 of the top ten spots in the wrestling tournament at this time.  It almost makes the conference tournament a mini-national.  I hope it holds, but with Luther having no one left in the championship bracket, I assume they will drop.  Then again I don't understand the scoring so they could possibly still be a viable top ten.

25 of the 32 of the IIAC qualifiers are all-american. That will help to re-inforce the granting of so many from the conference getting to the tournament.
Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Spring practice might have worse weather than Centrals playoff game against Bethel!!!
