I am finding out that coaching is very much who you know and what contacts you have.

That is true as a HC is only s good as his assistants. Bad assistants will get you fired quickly
Unless you coach at Iowa. It does get you fired at ISU. Ask Dan McCarney. Marty Fine ruined him.

Barney Cotton was no help either

Barney Cotton has killed more coaches than high blood pressure.

After getting Frank Solich and Dan McCartney fired, he "volunteered" with Ames last year. All he did was insure his kid looked good to the detriment to the rest of the team. Barney got a nice job, Ben got a scholarship, and Ames underperformed. Pretty typical.

FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

Ames was always a fun place to play in high school.  There stadium was pretty neat and that tunnel made you feel like you were at a large college.

BB & Walston Hoover:

I did a quick review of the IHSAA site.

Since 2001 Cherokee has been 30-33 in regular season games, with three winning record seasons ('03, '04, '06)

Since 2001 Muscatine has been 43-20 in the regular season games, with six winning record seasons ('01, '02, '03, '04, '06, '07)  The Muskies were playoff teams six times during that period.

I reviewed the individual passing records for games during that period.  The chart has games where the qb threw for more than 340 yards.  Cherokee had that happen 15 times combining records of two qb's.  Muscatine, during the same period, had this happen 9 times combining the records of three qb's (Stover, Durham, Phillips)

I don't know what all this proves other that this guy may be all right be he's no Thomas, Twait or Pedersen.  I do know Muskie fans have become spoiled, they want winning seasons and playoff games.  30-33 won't cut it.

I grew up in one of Cherokee's neighboring school districts and went to college less than a half hour down the road, so I'm pretty familiar with their football program.  Considering the talent pool available, 30-33 isn't too shabby.  They've had some really good QBs and WRs, but almost no one decent at RB or OL.  With more talent to work with, I wouldn't be surprised to see Napierala do quite well for Muscatine.

BOY, I think you are right on.  Im my 4 years, I can not recall one Cherokee kid ever coming to BV, either skill position or lineman.  I was never impressed with the town, or anyone I met that was from there.

are you located in Winona?  if so, did you catch Friday's SW MN's game?

one of my best friends is the head asst. @ SWMN and they  lost to Northern st twice this year by a combined 6 pts

they're a bubble team for the ncaa tourney and had they won friday, that probably would have gotten them in

Devine,
I hosted Southwest the last few days for the tournament.  Real nice group of guys.  Wish they could have got the W last night.

That would take some nasty weather! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Rush, Burkle and Jentz all made the final

Mercer took sixth

Kramer took fourth

way to go Kohawks.

should be a great time tonight.

I thought the US Cellular center was a great venue, especially for those that stayed at the hotel, but those east coasters are pretty rude.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

There is only one final tonight that does not have an IIAC representative.  That is at 141.  Every other final has either a Wartbug (6) or Coe (3) wrestler in it.  Way to go IIAC we will also have four teams in the top 7.  Luther sixth and Cornell seventh.

There's a stunner.  I have had a lot of family that either still lives or has lived in D.C.  As well as some others that live in NYC.  East Coasters drive me crazy with their arrogance.  When we went to my uncles wedding in D.C. we were asked where we bought our clothes.  When we told them we bought them in Waterloo they were surprised we could buy nice things in Iowa.  They told us they figured we bought them in D.C. after we got there.  For the most part you can put someone from Iowa and drop them anywhere in the world and they will be able to deal with it.  Not necessarily true with an East Coaster.  Sorry for my rant.

Good job IIAC wrestlers.  Let's just keep the tourney in Iowa.  Wasn't it in Dubuque last year???  Cedar Rapids this year, we could have it in Des Moines next year and maybe the Quad Cities the next year.  Keep it local for us!!!

Such arrogance isn't exclusive to the East Coast.  I got sick of the kids at BV who were from larger cities in the Midwest acting surprised when they saw we had a McDonald's and Subway.  Yes, morons, huge multinational corporations want our money just as bad as yours.  I also got tired of answering the question, "What do you do on the weekends with nothing to do around here?"  Well, I know all the college kids in Kansas City probably go to the symphony and theater on their way to a five-star restaurant every weekend--you know, all that stuff we don't have but they do--but around here we usually go to a bar or a movie, things I'm sure the pseudo-cultural elites who populate all those tan houses in the suburbs never do  ::).  Gimme a freakin' break.
When it's 3rd and 10, you can take the milk drinkers, and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time.

The Show

Since we're a bit off-sport topic, both BV and Loras won their opening round games in the NCAA BB Tourny last night.  Good showing for the IIAC!
Sometimes You're the Windshield & Sometimes You're the Bug!

BeaverOfYore

Let's hope their success continues in the next few rounds.  I don't think BV and Loras have gotten the respect they deserved all year, so I'd love to see them prove all the doubters wrong.
