Wartburg Fan

From the Wartburg fan's family our thoughts and prayers go out to the family in Parkerburg and New Hartford and the other areas touched by this storm.  WH glad to hear that your family was safe and homes were not damaged.

Amazing photos....I would like to echo the prayers and thoughts that everyone else has already mentioned.  Has anyone on here ever been through anything like that before??

Warthog--I was in Muscatine on Friday to meet some people at the Button Factory but did not get word of the roof job!  I am sure with that crew that your whole house is flooded after the weekend rain  ;D.

Walston,

How did the FB field and track come through?  Do you know if they plan a clean up day for the public.  I would be willing to donate a Saturday to come and help out as many others I am sure would.  If you hear of anything let me know.  Coach Thomas is a class guy and I would be willing to help out to see a good program like that stay going.

they showed pictures of the field yesterday.  the press box is gone, as is the scoreboard, i dont know about the field and track surfaces in general, but from what i can remember, those 2 things, along with the stands are pretty messed up.

Nice article on channel 13 about the school and FB field.  Looks like the players are already getting the field cleaned up.  The scoreboard is mangled as well as the goal posts from what I saw.

Lots of stories about A-P football today on the DMregister.com site. Check out the video section.
They will rebuild right there according to Coach Thomas.
Football players were out and cleaned off the field today.

Several people have sent PM's and emails about what they can do for the people of Parkersburg. I have heard some concerns about donating to the red cross or salvation army since it just goes into their general fund. I have no idea if its true and can just say that both groups are doing excellent work in Parkersburg. If anyone would like to donate to something local, they have set up a fund at Lincoln Savings Bank in Aplington and the phone # is 800-588-7551. There will be work opportunities obviously. Like I said in a previous thread, it sounds like several HS FB teams from around the state will be in town over the weekend to help clean up I assume around the school. The Falcon football team spent the day cleaning the field yesterday which seemed to make every news outlet in the state. Parkersburg will be back, better than ever. It may just look more like a suburb than the nice town with every house looking different and trees covering everything. Don't forget about New Hartford and Dunkerton either. I know several families have lost everything there, but since it wasn't through the middle of town, they aren't getting quite the media coverage that Parkersburg is.

My wife and I just looked at Walstons pictures.  I told her that even looking at the photos, it's hard to believe the level of destruction that tornado left.

Just another example of how the great coaches didn't just coach football, they made responsible young men and nurtured a community. Applington-Parkersburg is known across the USA for it's football. Now they will be known for the character of it's people.

I noticed a few pictures with math teacher Michael Irvin. Is this the same All Conference linebacker and wrestler from BV?
Yes it is. We have traded quite a few barbs with each other since he moved into town. My parents take care of his dog and he is the wrestling coach and jr high football.

Coach Thomas is a breath of fresh air among coaches these days.  Too often we hear about guys that are only looking for the next step up and aren't looking to stay in one place and build a program, much less become as involved in and dedicated to the community as Coach Thomas.  The Nick Saban's and Bobby Petrino's of the world could definitely learn something from him.

I hope FEMA is able to help those Iowa folks, and I'm not being sarcastic. FEMA didn't do the best job in New Orleans, but evidently they learned from that, because when the NW area of Oregon had terrible floods last year and a small town was completely inundated, FEMA was on the ball with assisting that community. It's okay to take the help when you need it, and it sounds as if some of those folks will. Their loss is unimaginable, and our hearts go out to them.
