Compared to spring practice August was great wasn't cold and they didn't try to kill you.

FYI for anyone that might stop by here yet tonight:  It looks like Iowa's in store for more severe weather tonight.  Tornado warnings out a couple counties south of Des Moines and severe t-storm warnings stretch from Bellevue to north of Ames to west of Denison to much of southwest Iowa.  Looks like the strongest line of storms is just moving into western Iowa and this system has been moving very slowly so far, which means it could be a pretty long night.

Everyone stay safe tonight. For the second time in just over a week, portions of the state of Iowa are under a "High" risk for severe weather. On average, only 6 times a year does this happen in the entire US.
An article on KcCI says that storm chasers are gathering on the western part of the state and a guy I talked to earlier whose wife is a meteorologist said they were all being called in to the station because they were expecting a long night.

First it was SK, now WH, too bad WC didn't have a meteorology major.  ;) ;D

Yesterday when I was in Parkersburg working there was a bus and a van load of kids from HARLAN (3.5 hours away) with the FB coach leading the way. They were still there @ 4pm when I left.

A lot of improvements in the 3.5 days I was there last.

It is awesome how many people from all over the place have been there to help out. There is still a ton of work to do. Slowly, but surely, it is getting done. I know of several people that have builders in place, ready to go. Just waiting for their piles to get hauled off.

I'd have double majored in a heartbeat.  I'm an unabashed weather geek and I love tracking radars and warnings to see what's going on.

Same here. Bigger fan of weather than sports. If I wouldn't have to start over again in the middle of Nowheresville, WY, I would probably consider becoming a weatherman.

From the NWS site:

SPOTTER ACTIVATION WILL BE NEEDED LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND THROUGH
THE NIGHT TIME HOURS...AND POSSIBLY AGAIN SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND
NIGHT.

ATTENTION ALL EMERGENCY MANAGERS: AN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
CONFERENCE CALL HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
DISCUSS THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR THE ENTIRE REGION.

LOL - you don't think we worked out in August? We had 2-a-days in the heat, too.  ;)

I actually thought of you as I typed that.  I contemplated adding cheerleaders vs. leaving them out and waiting for what kind of response you might give it!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Just so that we don't have the slacker reputation, I'd like to point out that we ran and lifted in the am, and had stunt practice in the afternoon. I would rather run and lift in the heat for a few hours than repeat the same stunt 20 times in a row. But that's just me.  ;D

I agree with WH -- the best practices were end of September, a few wins into the season.....

Ditto on the love for weather.  Spent many days in an old Jeep with a buddy chasing the storms around the DM metro area.  Had a few close call with high winds and terrible rain storm.  None the less it was always an exciting time.  My mother still swears that I should have taken weather as a major.  I am not a science minded person, I just love seeing the action happen.

liked august workouts about a trillion times as much as 2-a-days.  the lifting was never dreaded.  the running?  well you probably wouldn't be playing football if you actually liked running.  they have seperate sports for that.  but it was still better then 2-a-days.

I used to always wonder about them running sport folk...like in football if we had a lot of penalties we would run on Tuesday as punishment.  How do you punish a cross country runner for a poor performance?  Tell them they can't run?

Just a little aside, PETA chose today to protest outside of my office building. Being a farm kid, I think it's the most hilarious thing ever. http://www.kcci.com/news/16490978/detail.html

As mush as I LOVE football! Those days in training camp when you went 9:00am to about 8:00pm. of non-stop football, between meetings, practice, training room time, etc. All summer it was like "can't wait for it to start", then it did and it's like "when will these two weeks end!!!!!"

It also didn't help you were the only people on campus for atleast one week!!! :)

Well as a former track athlete and current coach. Workouts were just made harder. Instead of running only 5 400's, we had to run like 7. with cross country its the same thing instead of running 6 miles on a flat trail , you had to run 7 on a hilliy(sp?) one.

Yes we/they are runners it still sucks to have to run longer then you prepared your mind for.

I hope for the best for Iowa tonight.  Sounds like you guys are in for a long night.  With technology these days, it's good to know they can start preparing people now.  It's one thing for the weather guy on your local TV station to say severe storms possible and totally different to have it compared to a day in June in 1974 where 39 tornadoes touched down.

Jags will sell tornado relief hats for Parkersburg

DES MOINES (AP) - The Jacksonville Jaguars will be selling Aplington-Parkersburg tornado relief hats at this weekend's minicamp in Florida.

Jaguars center Brad Meester is 1 of 4 current NFL players from Aplington-Parkersburg High. He graduated in 1995.

The May 25 tornado flattened nearly half of Parkersburg and destroyed the high school.

Meester will distribute proceeds to the Parkersburg Relief Fund when he returns to Iowa next week.
