Mr. Ypsi

Congratulations to softballkid!!

Brought to mind a couple of tales from my soccer coaching days.  A neighbor girl (about 8, and a true 'daisy picker') who I never even dreamed would score, scored!  I somehow avoided a red card as I ran onto the field and carried her around the 'stands'.  In a game we were hopelessly losing, #1 son (now 19, then about 10) saw an opponent about to score yet another goal.  He sprinted in from 'miles' away and kicked the ball about 60 yards away.  We still lost, but they never even attempted another goal!  That was my first inkling that he definitely had 'heart'.

Some memories are forever.

Just a bit of bragging here but softballkid hit her first home run tonight and it was a grand slam. Got to go to work enlarging doorways for mom and dad's heads!

Congrats to softballkid,  My grandKid hit one over the fence at DCG the other night to bad it was the only run they score. Hope to see you next week-end at your home town tourney Footballdaddy.

In some rather late recruiting news, the kid who I considered our best football player at JSPC, will be attending Buena Vista in the fall.  I believe he'll be playing linebacker, but was a hell of a fullback for us as well.

That is great news.  I am sure that mom and dad will fly higher longer than the kid does.  The next game will bring the kid down while mom and dad float a while longer.  Congrats has softball kid made her decision yet?  Is she going to be a knight like big brother?

Did he change his mind or just make it up this late?  Sounds like BV will get a good player.

Changed his mind.  Was heading to Iowa Central (along with what seems about 75% of the graduating class...)  He also looked at Central a little bit early on in the process, but narrowed it down to BV and ICCC.  I knew his parents had really been pushing BV, but I'm not sure what ultimately changed his mind.  He goes up on Monday for a visit, paperwork, etc.

Some other guys from our squad are heading to Drake (1), Grand View (1), Iowa Central (1), and Waldorf (2).  Not 100% sure the kid going to ICCC will end up going out though.

Caught Coe's Joe Brannen in action with the Barnstormers last night. It's nice to see a D3 guy in action. He had a decent first half, but the second half was a different story. It seemed as though nerves got to him or something. Maybe it had something to do witht he Joe Brannen Fan Club being in attendance.....  ???

Yesterday, the lovely Mrs. Warthog and I headed over to the Hoover Museum in West Branch and took in the program concerning 1st Ladies in Iowa.  Two former Govenors' wives  (Ray and Vilsack) were on the panel along with the current (Culver).  Later in the day the program took on more of a national scope as the emphasis switched to historians discussing Mamie Eisenhower and Lu Hoover.  If you enjoy history it was an enjoyable time.

After West Branch we headed over to dinner in North Liberty which took us to the Coralville Dam area.  It appears the water is about to go over the top.  The spillways all appeared to be open.  If you know Iowa geography you understand we had to cross both the Iowa and Cedar Rivers on our little journey.  They are both flooding heavily which is covering many acres of crop ground.  In the mean time Peacock Warthog called to tell us he and his family were returning to Waterloo from Des Moines and had to take some detours on the route because of flooded highways.  They also observed many acres of corn ground under water.  With more rain expected for the next three or four days this could become more serious.  I hope our neighbors in Missouri have their john boats ready because Iowa is sending them presents down both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.

The proprietor of Coco's favorite watering hole on the Mississippi just got his parking lot and boat docks back in use after the spring flooding.  It appears he will now be facing summer flooding as the up stream tributaries such as the Rock, Wisconsin, Maquoketa and Turkey Rivers flow into the Mississippi.  Floods and tornadoes have kind of dampened my enthusiam for Iowa weather this summer.

Good news is that it will soon be September and we can get back to football.

My wife and I are awaiting our Iowa Tourism guide to plan trips to take the kids across our state this summer.  If it doesn't stop raining soon we won't get to travel to any of our state parks and other attractions!!!

And, for anyone attending the Hoover museum in West Branch...if you feel like shopping for a new or used car while there you can hit the West Branch Dodge dealer just off the interstate and be doing business with a UD alum.  Tell Todd Thein there "Go Spartans!!!" and he just might throw you an added discount on a new vehicle!!!

I will trust that the high water will be down by September and my plans of taking my son...and maybe daughters if they develop a sudden love for football...to IIAC football games will be able to go forward!!!

With all this bad news about the likely floods Iowa's about to see, I'll temper it with some very good news:  There won't be a single football season where Breitbach's isn't a popular post-game destination.  The place is re-opening on Saturday.

You beat me to it.  I just returned from my responsibilities of returning pop and beer cans to the local Hy-Vee.  While I was there I ran into an old fellow who is a friend of Mike Breitbach.  He told me Breitbach's was going to be open for Father's Day.  That is great news.  I'm very happy for the Breitbach family.  They are great people which was evidenced by the out pouring of support they received after the fire.

I'm glad that Little Warthog, Peacock Warthog and their families will be here for Father's Day, but I now kind of wish we would have told them to take US 20 over to Dubuque and we would have met them there.  I'm sure the restaurant will be swamped.  It may be best to wait until the novelty has worn off.  Loras, U of Dubuque, and Luther are all home contests for the Knights this season.  That presents a problem going there for post-game festivities.  I could justify heading over from Cornell but I've got to find that bleu cheese hamburger in Mt. Vernon.

It sounds like a road trip has to be planned.

Even though it sounds like our clan is heading to Des Moines for an I-Cubs game to celebrate Father's Day, I may go out of my way to head over to Dubuque County to watch the alma mater play baseball on Friday night and then take my dad up to Breitbach's on Saturday.  We'll see though.

One way or another, I'm getting over there sometime between now and Labor Day.  I'll probably mix a meal there in with a trip to Chicago, there's plenty of time to figure that out.

Charlie Kohawk

This is a random post/shout out to the Philly area alum who lurks here. Meanwhile, I can report the Kohawks will play a less frustrating -- to this observer -- brand of football next year.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi
