How about a little football talk to think about while sandbagging?

It seems that Coach Lewis has taken a position at St. Cloud State. This means that Coach Detwiler will become defensive coordinator. To help the defense, Coach Koehler has asked Willis to come back as a defensive assistant. Koehler is also giving up day-to-day control of the offense, although he will still have overall responsibility. How's that for an off-season shake-up in Waverly?

Now that is big news!!!  Former coach coming back to be an assistant.  An assistant leaving for the same school the former coach was a finalist for getting the recent HC opening.  And this all comes pretty late in the year.

Here is something for the numbers game we were playing...

56 - Career TD passes thrown by UD's Jermar Jackson

Don't know what day we are on but here is Tim Connell's career passing numbers.  6,181 yards and 58 TD's also 10 rushing TD's and 3 Recieving

I did not realize that it was 6,181 days since we started the number game ;)

Since Tim and Jermar have been pretty much linked together for the last few years I'll put up Mr. Jacksons stats.  (I have to get a dig in here because DF2K4 will really get to rub it in my face after Tims Redlands team beats my Spartans in OT this coming September)

Jermar Jackson's numbers...

7,825 passing yds 56 TD's
2,323 rushing yds 47 TD's
receiving TD's???  None that I am aware of...Advantage...Mr. Connell  :P

Jermar Jackson record as a starter against Central 0-4
Tim Connell record as a starter against Dubuque 3-0...um, advantage Mr. Connell

Those numbers are very impressive.  Jermar is a very talented player.

I picked up something on the Southern California web-page this morning.  It caught my interest sinced UD opens against Redlands this September.  80 recruits sounds like a lot to me, but apparently this isn't unusual for Redlands.   The piece I read follows:

Article about Redlands in the San Bernardino Sun:

Quote
Redlands reloads with 80 new recruits

The University of Redlands football team has reloaded for another title run.

Coach Mike Maynard announced the addition of 80 players to the program. The Bulldogs are coming off an 8-2 season that included a share of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship (with Cal Lutheran) and a berth in the Division III playoffs.

The newcomers will look to fill in the few available spots and add some depth. Maynard returns 16 starters including conference player of the year Dan Selway at quarterback.

"To be as competitive as we would like to be, we have to recruit well every year," Maynard said. "I'm confident this year's class will go a long way in helping us retain our top spot in the conference."

The list of locals who will head to Redlands includes offensive linemen Connor Hyne (Yucaipa), Seth King (Los Osos), Chris Radtke (Redlands East Valley), Reid Coultas (Hepseria) and Donald Obradovich (Hesperia).

Others are defensive end Randall Crim (REV), linebacker Ashton Krahenbuhl (REV) and linebacker Michael Nehls (Carter).

Among the transfers are running back Deckar Alexander, a graduate of Kaiser who spent his freshman year at Division III Menlo.

Wide receiver Justin Robinson (Rancho Cucamonga) is coming over from Mt. SAC.

The Bulldogs will have six home games this season, the first being a nonconference affair with Dubuque (Iowa) on Sept. 13.

Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

On the subject of flooding, I work at a John Deere dealership, and the rumor going around the office today was that one of the levees broke in Waterloo and the foundry and engine works were flooded.  Anyone in the Cedar Valley know if this is true?

The levees have NOT broken in W'loo water MAY go over slightly in CF. The story about Waterloo + JD is:

WATERLOO (AP AND KWWL) A portion of a railroad bridge that crosses the Cedar River in Waterloo has been swept away by raging flood waters. About one-third of the bridge washed away around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. A portion of the bridge struck a street bridge and another piece washed downriver.

The bridge is used by the Iowa Northern Railroad to transport tractors from the John Deere Tractor Works to Cedar Rapids. A railroad spokesman says the railroad is assessing the affects of the bridge washout.

SORRY I HADN'T READ DOOLITTLES RESPONCE YET. DUH!!

The water is down 2.5' from the crest in Waverly this AM. Right about the level of the 1999 flood. :-\

Very glad to hear that the water levels are going down.  Lets hope they retract quickly so that clean up can begin ASAP!

The latest release from Wartburg
Notice to the Wartburg College campus community
June 11, 2008
From: The Wartburg College Cabinet

The Cabinet continues daily meetings to share information and clarify issues related to the flood emergency. Thanks to all those who are living out the college's mission through their help and support of colleagues and neighbors affected by the flood. Thanks also to employees throughout the campus whose work enables college operations to continue and provides vital support and service to students and visitors.

The Northeast Iowa Synod Assembly scheduled this weekend on the Wartburg campus has been postponed. In light of the stress many Wartburg faculty and staff members are experiencing with flooding situations in their homes and the ongoing needs of the entire Waverly community over the coming weeks, the synod will explore another site as plans move forward for rescheduling the assembly.

The college has received several inquiries about whether housing might be available in campus residence halls for persons displaced by the flood. In the short term, we have made The W available for emergency housing and food provided by the Red Cross. Longer term, we are assessing the needs of our employees and our commitments for campus events before making any decisions.

Meanwhile, we know that many faculty and staff have been affected by the flooding and that it may be some time before they are able to live in their homes. If you can offer rooms in your home, please contact Cathi Duitsman at 8276 or e-mail cathi.duitsman@wartburg.edu.

A Flood Relief Fund has been established through Campus Ministry to help support faculty, staff, and students impacted by the flood. Checks can be directed to the Controller's Office and designated for the Flood Relief Fund. Requests for these funds can be made through the Controller's Office, 8278, or Campus Ministry, 8217.

If you can provide meals or volunteer help to members of the Wartburg and Waverly communities coping with damage and loss, please contact the Center for Community Engagement at 8701. The phone will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. CCE director Dan Kittle is developing a Waverly effort similar to this week's volunteer day in Parkersburg, and more information will be shared as plans are finalized.

Members of the Wartburg and Waverly communities who are in need of assistance should contact Cathi Duitsman, who will work with the CCE to meet requests. Phone 8276.

The W housed 47 people Tuesday evening, June10. It is expected to reopen for recreational use as staffing becomes available. Watch the Web site at www.the-w.org.
If you have any questions, please contact the office of Gary Grace, vice president for administration, at 8276.

ADDITIONALLY - At 11am the water level is 15.67' - below 1993 flood level

Water is up in La Porte City now.  Water is over Hwy 218 from Eagle road, 2 miles north of town up to the northern edge of the city.  Water is over the Brandon blacktop east of town.  You can take Tama road into La Porte only as far as the high school on the western edge of town.  The only way out of town right now is to take Hwy 218 south.

The water was nowhere near this high from what I can remember of the '93 flood.

AEN,

How are the people in Janesville fairing?  Is 218 open yet?  What do you think the timetable will be for that to be open?

I have seen lots of pictures on facebook of the damage done in Waverly.  My college roommates brother's house (a few blocks away from BK) has water almost up to the windows.  I'm sure many more friends in Waverly have been effected by the floods.  Looks like the regional satellite/radar has storms coming into NE IA as I type this.  I hope there isn't too much more rain.  I wish I was close enough to come and help out.

The rain is coming down pretty hard right now in the La Porte area.  Not what we need right now!!!

Most media here is all over CF/W'loo now. I have not heard of anything more than normal flood talk from there. 218 is still closed. My SWAG would be tomorrow AM.

I have a photo from last night that the water was about 4" below the menu boards.
Just started sprinkling here @ Wartburg about 10 minutes. Looks like for now heavy rain will be south of W'loo. Sorry doolittle

Looks like the Today show has been reporting each morning from CF.  Saw pics of Riverfront Stadium all flooded.  Guess the Waterloo Bucks will be playing most of their season on the road.

They are playing their next 2 HOME GAMES in MADISON. They were to play Madison in W'loo. An 8 game (out of 34) home stand was to start last Sunday.

Just out from WC. VERY GOOD COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Notice Regarding work-study students for disaster response work

For those who supervise work-study students, please consider having them
respond to the needs of those impacted by the floods as part of their
paid duties.  The cabinet has approved use of work-study students for
these activities as long as their absence from your office does not
interfere with college operations.  College offices must remain open.

I will coordinate these students into groups and send them to specific
addresses we have received that need assistance (primarily with removal
of damaged items in basements).

Please contact me with questions, and to sign up students.
Thank you.

By the way, kudos to Wartburg for how they are handling the flooding situation. I'm sure everyone in the Waverly and surrounding area is grateful for the help the students and campus facilities are able to provide.

(Mark it down, guys -- I'm complimenting Wartburg....this is a historic occassion.)  ;D
