AEN- Looks like the river is down considerably, but I'm not sure what would put it back in its banks. Looks like last night's rain hasn't effected things too much...yet anyway according to the USGS site.

From the view of the river from my house it is NOT back in it's banks but it is down considerably from last night. I don't know how much rain we received last night, but it seemed there was more thunder and lightning than heavy rain. The good news is that the river has falling in Charles City.

I know I am taking a risk of getting hammer like the book hawker but here is a way to help financially fac/staff @ Wartburg.

From College Pastor Larry Trachte:

The Flood of 2008 has impacted many in our Wartburg College community. While many suffer, many others want to help. As Paul writes, "If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together." (I Cor. 12: 26)

In response to the needs of our Wartburg community, we invite you to contribute to our "Wartburg College Human Needs Fund." Please make checks payable to "Wartburg College," designate them to the "Flood Relief Fund, " and drop them off at the Wartburg Chapel Office or the Controller's Office. Give what you can to help our colleagues in need!

If you have immediate needs resulting from the flood for food, clothing, or supplies (versus long-term needs like construction supplies, plumbing, or electrical services), contact either Pastor Larry Trachte, 8217, or Rich Seggerman, 8276, who will administer any donations that come in.

The address is
Wartburg Chapel
Wartburg College
100 Wartburg Blvd
Waverly, Ia  50677

There are many employees who have suffered a lot. I have NOT heard of any local bank doing like is being done in Parkersburg. If/when I do I will post here.
THANKS

AEN, you won't get hammered for letting us know how people can help others in need.  Thanks for the info.

Des Moines just put out an "all hands alert" to volunteers to report to sandbag at 9:00 tonight. Had they done this earlier today, they would have more than enough help, but instead of being proactive, they are reactive. Typical government.

Very unfortunate that this alter went out at 9pm.  Well put regarding the government.

Show...Nice to hear you and your family have not suffered any damage during the recent storms.  I hope that basement is finished!

The DQ shown is probably the one on 1st Ave SW. Only a block from the river right next to the north ramp to 380.

Raining this morning in central Iowa. But looks like it will be ending soon. Attended the NCAA yesterday what a track meet its a shame all the flooding is keeping alot of people away.

WGN just had live coverage from Cedar Rapids.  Looks like things are getting ugly there.  They showed a Dairy Queen where the water was half way up the building.  I know we talked about this, but I assume Coe is unaffected by this right?

Coe is right at the edge of the evacuations for the "500-year flood plan".  They should be safe, but the baseball field could be damaged, as it is a couple of blocks from campus and on lower ground.  Coe is probably on to high of ground to be affected, unless by sewers backing up, which is a very strong possibility all over CR.

Footage of Court Ave. flooding in Des Moines (2 blocks from my office building.....) Water has not gone over the downtown bridges yet, but the river still hasn't crested.....

Spent most of the day watching the water  in the DES Moines river while at work. I work right next to the river on Court Ave. The powers to be are pretty worried that we will get flooded this week-end after all the water from up North arrives in DES. Moines

How does Court Ave. look today after the repeat flooding last night?

I don't know how it looks currently, but my favorite restaurant, Buzzard Billy's, has 10 feet of water in it.

Waverly update. Current level is 11.44' - under flood stage. May head back up towards 1999 levels - 16.8' on Saturday. 2.5" of rain last night and morning. Heavy rain northern IA/Southern MN that will be heading this way as well.

Reference:
Flood stage for Waverly is at 11.5 feet. This is when minor street flooding begins. At 12
feet minor street flooding is expected and will affect the areas around intersection of 1st
Street and 2nd Avenue NW by Kohlmann Park and 1st Avenue NE near the river and may
necessitate street closings. Low-lying park areas, such as Kohlmann and Brookwood Parks
will flood.

Moderate flooding begins at 14 feet. This is when additional streets will be closed, such
as 7th Avenue SE, 4th Street SE and Cedar Lane. Flooding of low-lying areas is more
pronounced and the threat of property damage from surface water and ground-water
seepage becomes more likely.

I haven't heard, but I'll try to find out.

Is there something happening @ Central? It seems there has been a high turnover in coaches since Al D arrived back in Pella as AD. Am I incorrect in that?

Maybe it seems that way since WC has been blessed with minimal changes over the past decade.

The side of Court Ave I work on is dry but the other side didn't fair as well, some of the business took on water from last nights rain. While at work and watching the river it has came up alot during the day. they are now saying it will crest Saturday afternoon instead of Sunday afternoon and it will crest higher then in 93.

AEN- Is there concern in Waverly right now? I see the Cedar at Austin, MN went from 6 ft to 21 ft since midnight last night.

Walston -The last I heard was to expect the level to be equal to 1999 -16.8, maybe 17'. I just returned from filling sandbags since 2:30. Apparently the city administrator reported there were 100K more empty bags in town. Unlike how the city advised some people/business took down there sand bag yesterday. He also reported 6 houses will basement wall(s) caved in.

We did dodge a bullet this afternoon when the band of storms went south of us.

What is road conditions in DM? Will I be able get to the Terrace Hill mansion area tomorrow and OUT on Sunday?

As long as you don't go through downtown, you will be fine. Take MLK down to Grand and you should be OK. Probably is close to the way you were heading anyway. Don't plan on heading into WDM on Grand. Sounds like Valley Junction will be under water before too long. This is as of now. I don't know how things will change as the river goes up over the next 36 hours.

I am heading in from Chicago tomorrow morning.  Will I be able to get to DM without heading way out of my way?  I have been hearing rumors that I-80 is going to be shut down later tonight.  I'd love not to have to go down through Ottumwa in order to get to DM but will do it if I have to.
