I think he's talking Central Athletics as a whole. I know of new MBB and WBB coaches and obviously McMartin. I think a new wrestling coach as well. I don't know if that's high or not. I think up to the last 5 years, a lot of those coaches had been there for a while hadn't they?

Is there something happening @ Central? It seems there has been a high turnover in coaches since Al D arrived back in Pella as AD. Am I incorrect in that?

Maybe it seems that way since WC has been blessed with minimal changes over the past decade.

High turnover? Sanger coached track for the Dutch for 14 years, the last 8 of which have been as head coach. http://www.central.edu/athletics/story.cfm?StoryID=1814

I understand that he's talking athletics as a whole. I just don't see that being the case, though. We've had a few coaching shake ups, granted, but I don't think it's abnormal by any means. Central probably has more tenure and longevity when you look at the athletic department as a whole than any other school in the IIAC.

I thought they made kind of a poor hire with the women's basketball job a few years ago, bringing in a coach from Mount Ida. That's a big jump, from there to the IIAC. I wasn't at all surprised to see that job turn over again this summer.

There has been some turn over these are from the Central web sites.

Football  5th year

Baseball 6 years

Mens BB  6 years

Womens BB  Rookie

Cross Country Mens and Womens  Rookie

Tennis Mens and Womens  1 year

Mens Golf 12 years

Womens Golf  4 years

Mens Soccer  11 years

Womens Soccer Rookie

Softball 24 years

Track Mens and Womens  Open

Volleyball  6 years

Wrestling  Rookie

I would say that there is a turnover of sorts.  Tennis was due to a long term coach retiring  That will happen.  Football coach believe it or not is the second longest tenure in the IIAC Coach B at UD is the dean of the IIAC now.  (That is counting Coach O at Loras and BV as separate) Wrestling being a rookie, when you do not have success you expect a turnover and that happened.

Looking at the Wartburg site and looking at coaching tenures there you will find that there are 7 coaches with less than 5 years experience at Wartburg and with Central there 6 now with the Track position opening up.  So you have to ask with Dorenkamp being an AD for 8 years and hiring now 6 coaches and Willis having to hire 7 coaches in 4 years which is expected?  Not starting a war here just commenting on that with 17 sports a certain amount of turnover is expected.  Wartburg does have more coaches with over 10 years on the job.  6-3 over Central.  It was 4 until Sanger resigned so again not all that different.  I don't think this is anything unusual in small college sports.  Central does have the longest serving coach in any sport between these two schools.  The Softball Coach at Central has 24 YOS compared to the CC coach at Wartburg that has 18 so again not to much difference.

Also take into account these coaching jobs aren't normally the highest paying gigs to be found.  It's probably to be expected to have a somewhat steady turnover ratio.

Like I said before, I had no idea if that was a high amount or not. Wasn't the WBB coach that was there before the Mt Ida coach there for a long time, or am I thinking of somewhere else.
Wartburg in WBB, tennis, golf, and soccers, and technically, Koehler although he was promoted from within and Willis stayed at the school.

I know we've been dealing with weather drama around here and it is the summer break.  But does it seem odd to anyone that nothing has come out about a possible replacement for the IIAC Commishioner???

I seriously don't know how important the position is. Its more of a figure-head than anything else, isn't it? Was there even one before Johnny Cochrane?

He was the first full-time commish.  Though he was also teaching classes at Cornell so how full time was it???

In the past it's been part timers and I think you could get away with that again.  But, I think if the IIAC brought in a good marketing guy to put the conference out there into the public eye it would benefit the schools greatly.  Get the sports teams in the public eye and then that would help enrollments and giving at the conference schools.

But, we probably don't need to get into all of this again.

Here is the link to the Central story about Sanger leaving the track position.  Sounds like he is staying at Central.

More research on IIAC schools.  Cornell has no coaches with more than 11 YOS

Along the lines of Cornell UD does not have any coaches over 8 years of service.  Here is some research

                              BV                Simpson                UD

Baseball                    8                      3                       6

Womens BB                16                  22                       1

Mens BB                    12                    23                       1

Cross Country          1                         2                        1

Football                     2                       Rookie                7

Mens Golf                  1                         7                      ?  same as mens bb

Womens Golf              2                        20                        4

Mens Soccer                1                        4                        8

Womens Soccer           Rookie?              4                         8 Same coach as men

Softball                        28                       14                      1

Mens Tennis                 2                         1  Separate        3
                                                                     from womens

Womens Tennis            2 same as mens  1                         1 Same as mens now

Track                              1                           4                       Rookie

Volleyball                         1                           10                      3

Wrestling                        4                            1                        6

So it looks as though there is a lot of turnover in the coaches of the IIAC
