Quick question for the Central Faithful-
Is there cable in the dorms? I assume so, but you know what they say about assuming.

Hoover thought you were coaching you'll be too tired at night right? ;D ;D

OK, I gotta be honest.  I have no clue what this whole Iowa issue is right now.  Anyone have a story link?  Or if someone gets bored at work maybe they can fill in the details about what has all happened?

I tried looking quickly at ESPN but all I got was injury updates and other colleges suspending or kicking guys off of teams for violating "team rules" or breaking the law.  Seems like that is all you read about in College FB during the off season.

I found this to be a good read on the situation:  http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2008/07/19/letter-alleges-widespread-mistreatment-of-sexual-assault-case-at/#cont

Also, for Central fans...Anybody know if this Betsy Altmaier from the Iowa Presidential Committee of Athletics is any relation to Dutch LB Greg Altmaier?  I know he's an Iowa City native.

A younger, single version of Walston Hoover might have gone out looking for the night life in Pella.  The old, married, beat down version of Walston Hoover just wants to catch a couple of innings of the Cubs before falling asleep!!!

My take on Iowa is this. To be totally honest, Iowa is a second tier school. They will alyas be looking up at the USC's, LSU's, and Florida's of the BCS. This means that they end up having to recruit second tier players. The top players will never look at Iowa. Iowa's choice is getting a solid citizen with less talent, or a potential impact player with baggage. Obviously we can see which way they went, and it's backfiring. I believe Hayden Fry went the other way with less talented players and found a way to get the most out of what he had. Maybe Iowa recruits in a way to imply that in the state of Iowa, there is less trouble to get in to, but that has been proven not the case. My biggest fear is that this is only the tip of the iceberg, and that coverups are the norm. I know that the other state schools aren't immune to problems. but it seems like it's the culture at Iowa.

I'll echo the sentiment: Thank goodness for D3 and the IIAC!
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

I've been to the townie bar, I think it is called Woody's before. That was a few years ago, and at that time, I was the life of the bar. Of course it was a Thursday night.

I will be the first to say that I am not a Hawkeye fan, nor am I a fan of D1 athletics as a whole.  I have always preferred DIII.  With my prejudices clearly stated, I would also say that I would hope that someone's head will role at Iowa for trying to keep things in house and cover up what happened.  I think the situation at Iowa is long over due for some attention.

I guess I still believe Coach Schipper's philosophy that football players need to be gentlemen first.  The multitude of arrests are bad enough, but pushing a woman who has been assulted to not go to the police is going too far.  It should bring shame and outrage to the entire university.

i agree that something needed to be done.  there were obvious reasons as to why they tried to keep it in house.  of course they don't want to release the young girls name.  it wasn't like there was no action taken.  the kids were kicked off the team.  they wern't kicked out of school... yet.  i would bet that if they are found guilty of any of this they would no longer be attending IOWA.  it is a poor reflection on the entire university, which is probably why they tried to not let it leak out to the press.  i'm guessing the public doesn't know the whole story.  apparently it was not only the football coaches who tried not to do this, but the faculty advisors to the athletics department, her coach, ect... this story goes deeper then expected... i assume.  they should not have released any information until after the trial/verdict/decision or whatever was out.  they should have released them from the team for "violating team rules", then broke the story after the decision was handed down by the courts or after the investingation was completed.

Here is a little different take from the county attorney - NO pressure from U of I.

They tore down the Depot my senior year. It was the place to hang out, so I don't have many answers for the "happening spot" these days. Most people went to Doc Salami's when the Depot closed. Best of luck -- WH, it's your responsibility to breathe some life into the nightlife down there!  ;)

Way back when I was in school, a popular thing for the locals to do, after Wednesday night church, was to drive around the town square twenty or thirty times.  Of course that was back when gas was about thirty cents a gallon.  Just remember, what happens in Pella, stays in Pella.

I think the Sportspage is pretty nice.  I don't know about the hot night spots but they have a bar pool tables and great food.  I have never been there past about 430 so I can not attest to what goes on after dark.   ;D ;D ;D ;D  Ask Coach Connell he might know of some.  He is a lot younger and more in the know than I about Pella.   ;D ;D ;D ;D
