Does Illinois have a state Tuition grant like Iowa does. I think that was 4 grand when I was in school-that could make a little bit of difference.
GOOD NEWS!!! I Got my first full night of sleep in just over 7 weeks last night.
How about that.

Thanks guys...I knew I forgot what it was called...the Iowa tuition grant....

That sounds about right.  Don't get use to it.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Loras70sGrad

I dont know where Loras is fishing, but other private schools outside of IL are still recruiting the CCL and they are having success getting students to their schools.  Loras has no problem calling Chicago alums asking for money, but they seem to have a problem recruiting their kids or their schools.  Complain about lack of alumni support, I wonder why.  In the 70s and 80s Loras used to have a Chicago alumni lunch that attracted close to 400-500 people each time, now they can bearly get a 100.  Bottom line Loras has done a horrible job of nuturing their Chicago alumni base.

Loras has a rich history in getting CCL kids.  Wally Fromhart, of Mt Carmel, in the post war years, brought tons of ex CCL (many WW2 vets) like all americans Bob Hanlon and Jimmy Arnebery to Loras and that continued up until they dropped football.  When football returned to Loras in 1970 it was again CCL alums who were some of the dominant forces on the committee to bring back football.  Brother Rice Grads, George Skias and Steve Murray were the leaders and the first captains.  Three out of the four students heads of the club football program over its 10 year life were from the CCL. The Loras teams of the 70s were had nearly 40-50 % Chicago Catholic League and ESCC Players.  The 80s-90s brought such players Diehl (Bro Rice), Dietz (Gordon Tech), Johnson (St Rita), Speros (St Rita), Griffin (Fenwick) &  Davis (not CCL but Marist) and I better stop as I am going to forget some and I dont want to slight their contribution.

You are right Catholic Schools are no longer run by priest and nuns but their mission is still the same.   Maybe Loras's mission has changed but those schools havent.

The Show

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you have a kid who wasn't recruited by Loras and are pissed because you graduated from there? Or am I way off? ???

Loras Fans - Has Osterberger reported to campus yet?
Sometimes You're the Windshield & Sometimes You're the Bug!

Loras70sGrad

Wrong Show! Sorry to disappoint you, so dont stay out on that limb too long.  But I can tell you that I know plenty of alums who kids were not.

I would love to see more Chicago area kids at IIAC schools.  The SIAC's, the WSC gold and silver, and the other good conferences around the suburbs have some great talent whose parents have the money.  I am biased because I am a Hinsdale Central grad, we hate Fenwick, and think that the kids who are good enough to compete at D III and given no attention by scholarship schools are going untapped.  A lot of kids develop later in life and you can find kids that are ready to blossom.  I think Freddie Jackson is a good example of a kid with talent that went overlooked.  I'm sure there are more Freddie Jackson's out there.  I, to this day, am the best swimmer to ever swim at Coe College that was recruited by the basketball team.  That is where untapped talent is.  This might be asking for too much effort from a DIII coach and staff, but that is where big gains can be made against other schools.  Turn one sport athletes into two and three sport athletes, and recruit these huge schools mediocre athletes.

Not sure if I got my point across well, but that is my two cents.

Loras70'sgrad, Confused77, thehouse76, Warthog and LCOlineman57:

I will settle your debate about why Loras has done a horrible job in Illinois and the CCL.  And I do mean horrible.  The Duhawks have not landed a premier catholic league player since 1994.  Since 2000, they have goten all program-type kids.  No offense to you guys; but it aint even close to the good ole days!

In 1998, the administration stopped backing the Illinois tuition grant (MAP Grant) with Loras grant money.  For years the school has to put up its own money to compete with Illinois schools.  You cannot take a state grant across a state border.  The MAP Grant is larger than the Iowa tuition grant, it is $4,500.  That created a large gap with Illinois packages.  Loras has also redefined how they package out-of-state kids enlarging that gap; which has strengthened Iowa packages.

Essentially, due to finances they have turned their backs to Illinois and the strong history of Chicago as a part of Loras.
They must have been dominating in Iowa since '98 huh?
1998 - 4-6
1999 - 4-6
2000 - 4-6
2001 - 5-5
2002 - 5-5
2003 - 7-3
2004 - 4-6
2005 - 3-7 and lost to UD

Good decision to take away a bordering state and align yourself with UD against the rest of Iowa.

Since 2000(when Loras got half a clue), they have selectively backed the Map Grant with Loras dollars.  They can package an Illinois kid competitively if they want to.  Money is not the real problem...  Since the mid to late 90's Loras could not keep the quality (Alum dominated) football staff intact.  Loras is not doing well in Chicago or Illinois in general because that have not had any quality recruiters on staff since 1999.  The representation is sad in the CCL since Helminiak left Loras.  Bower and Mierkiewicz did an outstanding job in Illinois.  Do not blame Loras College entirely, blame the athletic department, which has been poorly managed for the past 10 years.

Good luck Loras?  They will not be above .500 until they can SUCCESSFULLY recruit in Illinois and Iowa.  Let's see if Osterberger can get a premier CCL kid!

Charlie Kohawk

Another productive game by Fred Jackson as the Rhein Fire moved to 4-0 in NFL Europe play with a 31-21 victory over the Hamburg Sea Devils. Jackson had a game-high 79 yards on 20 carries and two receptions for 31 yards, but no touchdowns. If only a local establishment carried the NFL Network, we could fill the place with Kohawk faithful for Fire games.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Hey Charlie,

I will talk to Dennis Mahoney.  I know "Mahoney's" has access to all MLB and NFL games.  I think they have directv.  That may be our answer. :)

Coacher- I would welcome you to the board, but you won't register like the rest of us. You bring up valid points..but come on..register.

If you want to talk records, go right ahead. Because, I believe the best recored before '98 was 7-2-1. So either way you slice it, with or without CCL kids, they still haven't won an IIAC Title. I think the Dutch, Kohawks and Knights have proven, to win the IIAC Title it takes recruiting Iowa very well.

Klieman was on the right track, if any of you had/have seen some of those freshman running around last year, I am sure you would agree. I think Osterberger will continue in the right direction. He is an excellent recruiter as well. Things can only go up.

The Show- Osterberger is on Campus

Pat Coleman

I believe he registered and then ran -- deleted his registration and bolted.

Thanks Pat.

I don't like it too much when people won't register but they want to post on here. No doubt he had a few points I could agree with or at least not think they were totally invalid, but c'mon register and be a part of this. Don't hide.
