Leave the poor guy alone...if he wants to have outrageous expectations let him...The Central and Wartburg fans really shouldn't even worry about any other team other then each other according to what I've read on here.

I think respect is gained on the field, not necessarily by records but by how a team plays...I played on the '06 Luther team that went 2-8...I can guarantee you that talent wise we were one of the top 3 teams in the conference, and we got a lot of respect from other teams. We just didn't(couldn't) win close games. Doesn't mean we were a bad team but record wise we were. And I know the Cornell is getting a lot more respect over the last 2 years then they were years before...so why can't he just believe what he wants to believe and at the end of the season I'm sure the record of the Rams will be punishment enough for him.

Very well said most teams have talent , getting that talent to play together is the key, 8) 8) that and lots of luck some years doesn't hurt either .

I agree too, ones record doesn't always tell the story too!

Some other reasons
• The top teams in this conference gets too much respect, they are not as good as the hype
I don't think the Johnnies gave the Dutch enough respect last year.  But that's okay, we did it the old fashioned way.  We earned it.

I don't recall the score of the Wartburg/Cornell game last year, but it seems to me that the Central/Cornell game was about the only conference game we had that was a blow out. I can see the other teams that had us down in the fourth quarter saying this, but I'm not sure you shouldn't ShowMe something before claiming we got too much respect.

Regarding the Wartburg game...yes, it was the Yordi penance game; but Cornell was rolling out there with a Freshman QB, so that at least oughta rate for a little bit considering we mustered a score.

Regarding the Central game...this was the "We have Tim Connell and nobody else does" game for me.  Cornell, late in the 2nd quarter, scored to make the game 19-14.  With under 3 minutes, I believe, DF2k4's 2nd favorite son  ;) , led the Dutch to a quick score to make 26-14 at Half.

Then, when Cornell was knocking on the door at teh Central 5 in the 3rd Qtr...the aforementioned Freshman QB fumbled the ball with Central recovering.  If Cornell scores, it is 26-21, and still a game.

Instead young Master Connell engineers a TD drive that for all intents ends the game.

In one short sequence it showed what Cornell, for the moment, lacks; and what makes Central...well Central.

But I will say this, I was encouraged.  Our team, led by a Freshman QB, against the league's best showed signs that there is good reason for some newfound optimism.

Thank you for sharing your story

Camp starts:  T-minus 2.5 days.

Bad case of the runs after downing a case of Carne Asada that went bad en route to Iowa...means start of camp in T-minus 3.5 days  ;D

I agree, good take on the situation.  I will say I think it's been a bit more civil this year.  I thought posters were a lot harder on PH last year and he wasn't saying anything as enthusiastic as ShowMe.

I was trying to figure out the conference this year and I have now decided to not even think about it until after the 2nd week of the season.  And even then I don't think we will have much of and idea of how the conference will shake out until after week 4!!!

It is interesting to note that Cornell has won 1 conference game over the last 3 seasons yet can beat the UMAC champ and the MIAA champ.  Say what you will about those conferences being weak...I think it says something about the competitive nature of the IIAC.

Thanks 'Dog.  The point is that Cornell is not trying to take respect away from you, and don't diminish what success that we've had.  It's all relative.  The UMAC and MWC champs are always an annoyingly happy group.    ;D

You ought to be proud that your little brother can go across the street and pick on the neighbors punk kid.   8)

Simpson looks pretty good...Maybe it their SID is just that good and is mesmerizing me with his tricky words of optimistic outlook, but they seem to be pretty solid all around.

I'm a huge Cornell fan and wish them the best but let's be realistic.  They lost their heart and soul of the D in Gustafson. And on offense they lost 4 of the 5 starting oline( 3 have been 4 year starters)and two solid receivers.  Also their fullback isn't coming back.   That leaves Hardman and a soph QB.  Unless they have an outstanding freshman class it may be another hard season for the Rams.  If Cornell is yet again another small team they may indeed fall victim to the injury bug again.  I do believe they will get a conference win without a doubt and I will cheer them on come every Saturday.

Go Rams!!!

What was the last sport Cornell finished in the top half of the conference in? I'm asking that as an honest question because I don't know.

I was reading the SCIAC board the other day and Pat had this observation and I think it fits here.

Rajkowski has the first installment of his MIAC season preview posted.

This installment's summary (in a grossly unfair simplification):

Hamline: Rebuilding
Carleton: Maybe

Quoted from the Fan down under...click the MIAC Season Preview above.

Ram fans...don't count Carleton as an automatic "W".  They will be tough; we must be ready and not get too full of ourselves if things follow plan and we work Grinnell.

I hope Cornell does well this year the more strong teams the better the conference is and the whole conference gets better , gets to recruit better and plays better in the post season it is a win win deal. No team should go without a win in the conference so go Rams (except against Simpson ) ;) ;)

ShowMe, I've noticed that you like to spew quotes and maxims from a variety of sources (Al Davis, John McCain, Jesse Jackson, Jack Nicholson, Barack Obama, Aretha Franklin, TO).  Perhaps you've heard this one from your fellow Missourian, Mark Twain: "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

Yes I heard that one too,
I've only expressed my hopes and aspirations. I was attacked for being optimistic, now foolish because my team is not one of the top teams therefore don't have the the same rights to support my team. I don't consider it foolish. I consider it team pride especially with what we've had to experience.

I know where you're coming from.  My post was mostly in jest, but you might catch a little less flak if you avoided the "we would have won if only we hadn't lost" type of comments.  I played on a sub-par team, and I always hated it when my teammates tried to explain away our losses in such a way.  The truth is, we just weren't that good.  That doesn't mean that there's no way we could have won a few more games, but I will readily admit that we weren't conference championship material.  A little objectivity will gain you respect from your fellow posters and ensure that you don't become "that guy" on this board.
When it's 3rd and 10, you can take the milk drinkers, and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time.
