Its been awhile since ive looked at this thing but the season is comin up quickly here so I thought I can throw in my two cents...

People seem to think that Cornell needs more Iowa players or more players in general, talent,...etc.  Which is all nice, but the thing that bothers me most is the coaches.  Don't get me wrong, they have a good, experienced coaching core.  But half of the staff is in the first year and over half of those first year coaches have what I would call no coaching experience.  And looking at one of the position coaches im dumbfounded as to how he even got hired.  So is the way of a program who has a reputation for not being able to keep people around.  Hope for the best for them this year and have them be .500 would be outstanding and if not....well at least theyre playin Grinnell and will win at least one game.

Yes I saw that as well and was a little dumbfounded myself. I think the new o-line coach/es will be a good fit. Josh Rife was a very good player for Mount Vernon in the 90s and went on to have a good career at St. Olaf and has been coaching high school ball for the best few years. He is a very intelligent guy. Helping him out is Shane Eaglin who graduated last year and was 2nd team all-conf. He is probably the best offensive lineman Cornell has had since 2001. Obviously he will have to make the transition from player to coach but he will be helpful having played in Dillons offense and being a seasoned o-lineman in the IIAC. I won't mention the name of the dumbfounding hire, but I just don't get it. They couldn't have been that desperate for coaches, but then again maybe they are  ???

I can't imagine why one would commit such blasphemy anyway.  Once I've got 73 more posts under my belt, it will make your karma plummet on this board, as well.

I'm just teaching you how to make your karma plummet  ;D I am one of those rare people that is a fan of all beer.  I can like a Bud just as well as a Guinness!!!  Living in Dubuque we became fans of all beers made in Minny and Wisky.  Strange, but around here I seem to run into people that are either beer snobs and will only drink micro brews...or people that think if it isn't Bud or Miller it ain't beer.

Funny thing is that the weekend we go to the Dubuque/Rockford game we plan on visiting the recently re-opened Potosi Brewery.  And on our way home we are making a stop in Parkersburg to the Blue Stem winery to pick up some beer making supplies.  Now that we are living at the farm my wife has told me I can start home brewing again!!!

If we keep all this talk going tonight you might be able to hit that 200 post count tonight...and then really set to droping my karma!!!  :o

Are you going to make some rye too?  I don't want to open the paper and see Doolittledog in jail for bootlegging.   ;D ;D ;D

Whiskey has interested me  ;)

You start making your own whiskey and I'll have to make a trip down to LPC to have a taste.

Mmm, beer.  I too am a fan of all kinds of beer.  However, being nearly a year removed from the college scene, I'm finding it harder and harder to choke down the really cheap stuff.  I now drink more for quality than quantity (most of the time).  I wish my current housing situation were more conducive for home brewing, but I have found that Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits has more than enough variety to keep me entertained.

I can agree with this. I noticed this about a year after I was removed as well.  The days of drinking 500 beers in a day just do not happen anymore.  Plus my tollerance for hangovers has droped drastically.  Hangovers never used to phase me.  Now my hangovers are worthy of a song.

BREAKING NFL NEWS

Gene Upshaw dead at 63. NFLPA executive director and Pro Football Hall of Famer Gene Upshaw has died. Upshaw, who was 63, had been fighting pancreatic cancer.

As a kid I HATED "da RAAAIDERS", but loved to watch Shell + Upshaw work together.

I'm guessing we're heading towards the end of NFL labor peace as well.

To say U of Dubuque got better because of some nicer buildings or more athletic football players seems to cheapen their success.  I am of the opinion that they have perhaps simply out worked other teams.

I don't think anyone said that. Please refer back to my post about UD's formula for success and you will see one of the ingredients being that hard work you talk about...

Dubuque adds 3 new GA's to their football staff.

Byron Abram - From Country Club Hills, IL.  Back up QB the last 4 years to Jermar Jackson.  Also lettered in baseball at UD.  Will coach wide receivers at UD while pursuing his masters in Business Administration.

Lucas Stanton - From Mt. Vernon, played at Cornell, was an assistant there the past 2 seasons coaching running backs and wide receivers.  Was a 3 year starter for Cornell at Running back.  Will coach outside linebackers at UD.

Aaron Brant - From nearby Kieler, WI.  Brant was a 4 year starter on the O-Line at Iowa State.  He earned all-conference honors 3 of his 4 years in the Big 12.  He was drafted by the Chicago Bears before being injured.  Brant will coach running backs for UD while pursuing his masters in Business Administration.

I had barely heard about Cornell until I went to BV.  They never came to my high school and I had never known anyone who went there.  I did play in the CIML, which I thought was strange that they would not atleast come in and see a few of us.  After hearing so much about how unique their academics are, it has me very interesting.  No ShowME I am not becoming a Ram fan, but I wonder how I would have done in that system.  It might have been very good for me to concentrate on one thing at time instead of juggling 5 and some semesters 6 things at a time.  Then I could have spent one trimester on English ;D
So does Cornell's unique academic system help or hinder their recruiting efforts?  I can see where that could be a make or break consideration as well as one that could keep some kids from even considering them, even it they might do better in that kind of setting.  What do you think?

Cornell having the 1 class at at time is what got me interested in them in the first place.  I enjoyed the tour...though we also had a bit of a dud for a tour guide.  I think I would push that in the recruiting process but I can also see how that system might end up being the make or break in the decision making process for a kid.  I like the idea of it.

I toured Dubuque, Coe and Cornell.  I didn't tour Iowa because I already knew it well from having 2 sisters already there.  In the end, I chose Dubuque because I liked the campus and I was interested in their Aviation program.  It wasn't that I disliked anything about the other schools.

Upper Iowa I believe does a 2 class at a time system.  2 classes for 6 weeks.  Is Cornell 1 class for 3 weeks???

I still think it comes down to how the school sells itself.  If you can position this type of academic program and make it seem like the way to go, then you will get the kids in the door.  As Heys has said, it fit perfectly for his sone, but it appears, correct me if I am wrong, that he was looking for a specific academic setting for success.  I should have looked more into this myself.  I learn vastly different than most kids do, and at times I became very bored/disinterested in who academic load thing.  On the surface Cornell would seem to be a good fit, and if that was sold to me and parrents, then we might have considered it.  As I have said before, I still bleed Beaver blue and gold and would not trade my experience for the world.  Football got me to college and once I was there I realized that I could get a degree.  Coming from a line of union carpenters and breaking into the "white collar" world was not in my cards until I got onto a college campus and saw what I could achieve.  That being said, my grades could have been better ;)

Ok vote on wether you like DF1 ones idea.  I can come up with a few of the questions and number them.  Say question #1 can be the first tie breaker then go to question #2 and so on.  I will think about these and post them on the pickem board.  Lets hear all of your opinions for this.
Sounds fine to me.  But we all think we are going to win outright anyway!   ::)

Mav45, would your nephew be from the Decorah region? That sux about the knee and when it took place. This is the worst time to have them. You prepare all year and when the season is two weeks away, it all goes down the drain. I like the discussion about the athletes. Sometimes you have to have the right mix. There are guys who may not have the fastest 40s or the highest bench presses, but they could still be damn good football players. It works the other way too. I guy could be a tremendous athlete, but if can't put it together on the field, then he's not an asset to the team. That might have been Dubuque's problem for awhile. No one has ever doubted their athletic talent, but they just haven't had the right mix. I think we seeing a definite change in that.

Yep, Decorah grad.  His younger bro finished his last 3 years at Roland-Story, father took a high-flalutin' vet job over at ISU...back to where we (his mother, my sis) grew up.

I had higher hopes for the BB team too.  One would have thought that with the experience they had that the consistency would have been a strength.  But no.

I have heard that they brought in some nice new BB kids to help.

really??? RB??? one would think the o-line would benefit from a former D1/NFL (albiet for a short amount of time) lineman more then rb's???  i know people don't always coach what they played, but it is usually atleast the opposite of what they played (o-line to d-line, saftey/db-qb/wr/te), so you can know what the opposition is/will be trying to do.

Hopefully the new kids will come with a be or beat the best attitude and help get the BB team thinking along those lines.

Now back to regularly scheduled football programing...

Dubuque seems to like to do that.  Their last running backs coach was Kenneth Eboh who had been an o-lineman at D2 power NW Missouri St.  He has now joined Joe Austin at Hanover.  Kenneth is the older brother of Collins Eboh that started out at ISU and is now playing for UD.
