Let's get some good talking points going on here so I can become a karma giver/taker by the end of the week.

If you had not chosen the school that you did, but instead had gone to one of the other conference schools, which one would it have been and why?

Much as I don't like them as a rival, I would probably have gone to Simpson.  They have a nice campus, strong academics, medium size town with close access to Des Moines and not too far from home.

Now I feel like I need another shower or something after saying all that nice stuff about Simpson.   ;D ;D ;D  I'm gonna wash that school right out of my hair.  LOL

I probably would have gone to Loras or BV in the Iowa Conference had i not attended Coe.
At Loras, there were a ton of people all ready there i knew from high school, and a couple of guys i was friends with that went there in my class as well (which was one of the biggest turn-offs and reasons i didnt end up there) -- also liked kliman (sp?).. graduated from the same high school.  i guess it wouldn't have mattered though, he was only there for 1 year.
BV - loved the campus, great setting, good coaches -- terrible town (IMHO)

if i didnt go to Coe, it would have been Creighton -- which is what it came down to anyways.

was anyone thinking anything besides an IIAC when deciding on schools?

Around my junior year I was pretty sure I was heading to Luther. I won a ton of music awards that year and was also a soloist at their music festival.
Ended up having a great experience with football my senior year and decided I wasn't ready for it to end.
Really wanted to do both and have a chance to succeed at both.
Continued to look at Luther, and they were going to give me enough money to sing that I would have been going there for pennies, but the caveat was that I could play football for 1 year, but then would have to focus on music. They then hooked me up with J. Brad Pole and there was no way in H*** I was going to play for that guy.
Visited Central with great respect for their football program and liked the campus, but was not impressed with the music side of things at all so if I went there it was just going to be football.
Then I visited Wartburg and was hooked. Good football team, great music program, and the heads of both understood that I wanted to do both and allowed me to do just that. I planned on majoring in communications wherever I went, but wasn't too concerned about any particular schools programs because each town I was looking at had a radio station where I could work. In the on-air department, I found no one really cared where you went to school, they wanted to hear/see your audition tape.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

To tell you the truth, I didn't even know where Storm Lake was or Buena Vista existed. But football overcame all other options, and a 5 hour drive up to UM-Duluth or a 3 hour drive to Winona State.  Those were the other otions if I hadn't chose an IIAC school.  Both schools are rich in their traditions of athletics, and drinking, with me being better at one than the other.  If I had to choose a different IIAC school it probably would have been Loras or Luther.  Loras because after playing there, wow, the atmosphere at the homecoming game and all the drunks (makes me think I would have fit in).  And playing in the rock bowl was a great experience, getting to play there 5-6 games a year would be awesome.  And Luther because a ton of people from MN go there, would have been an easy drive, and well I hear there Academics are strong, to very strong.  Also I really like Norwegian Women...I once made out with the Norwegian Exchange student, I will never forget...eh whats her name...?

I stand by my claim that I can (and someday will) tackle a horse.  The hay bale didn't actually make it all the way around the world.  Video footage from Space Station Mir shows it ricocheting off the moon.  By the way, you did miss out on an excellent party at the wedding.  I know it was fun because I was the only sober one there (per the missus' request orders).  Is State Farm the name of some leper quarantine out in the boonies or did the actual State Farm just need to fill their quota of men with fupas to maintain EOE status?

MNBeev:

There will be no procreation any time soon.  I started wearing briefs right after the wedding.  And yes, I'll be at every game I can make it to this fall, so you'll have to come down for a few.  Afterwards we'll play board games and drink sody pop.
When it's 3rd and 10, you can take the milk drinkers, and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time.

I also agree on the blue-eyed blonds.  I find it awful handy to keep one around the house.

Dubuque adds 3 new GA's to their football staff.

Byron Abram - From Country Club Hills, IL.  Back up QB the last 4 years to Jermar Jackson.  Also lettered in baseball at UD.  Will coach wide receivers at UD while pursuing his masters in Business Administration.

Lucas Stanton - From Mt. Vernon, played at Cornell, was an assistant there the past 2 seasons coaching running backs and wide receivers.  Was a 3 year starter for Cornell at Running back.  Will coach outside linebackers at UD.

Aaron Brant - From nearby Kieler, WI.  Brant was a 4 year starter on the O-Line at Iowa State.  He earned all-conference honors 3 of his 4 years in the Big 12.  He was drafted by the Chicago Bears before being injured.  Brant will coach running backs for UD while pursuing his masters in Business Administration.

really??? RB??? one would think the o-line would benefit from a former D1/NFL (albiet for a short amount of time) lineman more then rb's???  i know people don't always coach what they played, but it is usually atleast the opposite of what they played (o-line to d-line, saftey/db-qb/wr/te), so you can know what the opposition is/will be trying to do.

Think about this point.  A coach if he wants to become an OC/DC/Head Coach needs to learn the whole game.  He knows the OL now.  He can learn more and become a bigger asset to the staff if he broadens his knowledge.

I see that Aaron's little brother, Alex, post player for the Loras Basketball team is suiting up for football this season. He played ball at Wahlert where he had interest from Iowa and Wisconsin before he decided to go the basketball route. Itll be interesting to see how he does as a two sport athlete.

If i wouldn't have gone to Loras I would have been a Knight over in Waverly or at UNI.  I looked at them all for communications but felt the most comfortable at Loras. Wartburg was pretty enticing. I liked their program and location.  UW-P is good for radio, but their program as a whole seemed to be lacking.

Also, Loras got in a scrimmage today with Ambrose. I only got news of the first half in which the Duhawks seemed to struggle on offense.  The defense looked good, though.

I have to confess, I didn't know much about ANY DIII schools when I graduated.  Back in the day, my good old alma mater captured a couple of state titles, and there were lots of coaches through RS hallways....

never heard of Central, only went to listen to the coach (Schipper) b/c my HS coach said I should check them out.  I remember SO much about that first meeting....I don't recall knowing ANYTHING about how strong a team Central had been even back then, but was very impressed w/ Coach Schipper.

Also visited Coe...it's funny the things that stand out.  I thought the coach (Schlagel?) was a little bit of a windbag, and the hotdogs at the cafeteria were totally lame.  VERY dull visit.  Luther I knew about, and still have a tremendous amount of respect for, but never considered going there.  Visited at the HS with Don Birmingham from DBQ and Jim Hershberger from BV, and some crazy-looking dude from Dana College.  All I remember from that visit is that the guy had the longest totally white eyelashes I had ever seen, and that their team was 0-10 the year before.

It was the UNI QB coach that really captured my interest...his name was Terry Allen.  I ended up signing a letter of intent to play there, then chose Central at the 11th hour, probably b/c a best friend was attending there, also playing FB.  My official recruiting trip to UNI was a bit boisterous for a small town, pretty conservative central Iowa kid.  And then listening to Stan Sherrif rip his team up and down, cussing....and that was the pregame meal....decided that the Panthers weren't the way to go.

Never heard of Wartburg then, Simpson was totally out as I knew a kid who went there to major in opera.

Needless to say...not the most well-thought out college visiting strategy, but had a fabulous small college experience at Central anyway, and have loved the place ever since....

Central has always been a big destination for R-S grads. Several of footballkid's era are going there. Although he might have had a great career there, he's very happy and comfortable with Wartburg. He was recrited by all the IIAC schools all the way up to Columbia. He still knows it was the right decision.
