Any word on how any teams have looked in their scrimmages or who has yet to have their scrimmage? Eureka had to cancel on Cornell I hear because of too many injuries already and did not want to risk anymore in a scrimmage I guess.

Not sure how good of a look Eureka could give them but I know it is sure nice to go against somebody else after you have been beating up on eachother for a couple of weeks.

I know the Mt. Vernon vs Solon game is tomorrow night in MV. That is usually a good game and good atmosphere for a high school game.

On a MUCH different side note.....as I was looking at DBQ1965's list of IIAC fans on this board, it got me to thinking about everyone's "screen names". Of course, most have some correlation to the school they respresent although some are very unique and we only know their affiliation when they tell us.

For me, you would think the "University" in "Willie University" had something to do with the UNIVERSITY of Dubuque. However, that is really my porn name-----My middle name (William) and the street I live on (University Ave)----for those of you that don't know what porn name means 

So, that is how Willie University came to be. I moved last year to a new address so I am wondering if I now have to change my screen name?? I think I will stay with Willie University (Willie U for short).

Solon-MV should be a good one.  Can't forget about CR Wash @ Cedar Falls in 4A.  On the east side of the state, that's an early season battle between two teams hoping to be playing until mid-November.  Dike-New Hartford vs. Aplington-Parkersburg could be a good one too.

BTW, the Shawn Merriman should be shutting it down.

The Chargers, my team, are really pissing me off about this.

Clearly they don't value his services past the term of his present contact.  A.J. Smith is a prick for letting this come to this.  A very shrewd prick, but a prick nonetheless.

Sure, it's Merrimen's "decision"... and his teammates praise his toughness, but I wonder if any Bolt veterans have thoughts about how management could give a crap less about one of their best player's long-term health and ability to earn a living playing football at a high level.

Clearly the Chargers have assessed their risk.  Merriman is a free agent after '09 and if he continues to perform at levels similar to his 1st 3 years, then he will command a very high price for his services...a price that it appears the Chargers would be unwilling to pay.

Given that Smith fancies himself a good judge of talent (his track record entitles him to some self-applied back patting), it is clear that he believes that Merriman's replacement is already in the 3-deep.

On the other hand, if Merriman has a subpar year due to decreased mobility, the pedestrian stats will cost him bargaining leverage.  If he gets hurt further then misses '09 to rehab, his bargaining position is shot.

If Merriman were to to pass on this year, fix the PCL and LCL, rehab in '08...while there are no guarantees...the chances are very good that his '09 would be worthy of a top 1 or 2 LB and blow the Chargers salary cap, making him unsignable.

I honestly think that A.J. Smith sees it as beneficial to the Chargers for Merriman to forego surgery now not because it helps the defense but because in the long run saves the Chargers money in resigning Merriman as damaged goods.

Anybody that doesn't think pro football is about the money is naive.

Because the NFL is a business he is making a huge mistake by not sitting out and having the surgery now.  he is just decreasing his own earning potential in the future, and while some people will be like he is already ready making a lot of money and its not that big of a deal, the difference could be in the neighborhood of some 30-50 million dollars in the worst case scenario.

And sure he can be doing the tough guy thing and play through the pain, and show his "toughness".  But I think there is a very fine line between toughness and stupidity and I think he has crossed it.  Not to mention that he in the end could hurt the defense because he will not be playing at 100%.

This is an issue in all levels where some players sit when they are hurt and criticized while others play and are praised.  Just look no further than LT who was blasted for sitting out in that playoff game and people questioned his toughness, when he was protecting his career but more importantly he did not believe that he could preform at a level high enough to help his team win that day.  We all know football is a physical sport and some people need to be pushed through pain to succeed, but there are also times people need to be held back as to not do themselves even more harm, as I believe to be the case with Mr. Merrimen.  Where is his "support circle" like his agent and his family?

What a great name if you were the opposite sex

I grew up on a fork in the road so I have many combinations but the one that stood out in my head would be Urbandale Woody.  Still I think the top name on the list would have to be the chick that wrote the movie Juno.  Diablo Cody.  Thats pretty cool!

Off the subject of porn names and prez's resigning...Kicked off the 9-man season in MN last night took a beating but heck saw some good things.  A 20-56 beating isn't so bad any more in 9-man.  I did see some potential D3 players though.  A future beaver for sure.
