Last year, the freshmen and sophs were both undefeated in football. The freshmen this year actually got the best of the sophs in a scrimmage a couple weeks back.
Baseball-wise, quite a few sophs played varsity and even a couple freshmen IIRC. Didn't have a very good season, but should bode well for the future.

Got my first live football game of '08 in last night as the Dowling Sophs defeated East 41-0. Not even 2 minutes in, we had run 1 offensive play and were ahead 14-0.

I have heard that the lower levels (frosh and sophs) are REALLY talented at Dowling right now!  Especially in baseball.  Confirm or deny Walston?

Good luck tonight WH.  Whip those lineman into shape to open up the running lanes.  Will look forward to seeing the results on TV tonight.

Two interesting articles in today's Wall Street Journal of all places.  The first was about how the BYU and University of Utah football teams have managed to win without paying their coaches as much as a lot of DI programs do.  The other is about Australian style punting.  I didn't quite get the technique but the idea is to get the ball to turnover rather than spiral.  Spiraling balls bounce more erratic and are harder to down than Australian style punts per the article.

I read the Cornell preseason report.  Good news and bad news.

Good news:  10 defensive starters return  :D

Bad news: 10 defensive starters return for a team that gave up 36 points a game last season.  :'(

Covered our first high school game of five this season.  Defending State Champions the Caledonia Warriors dominated St. Charles.  First offensive play of the game was long pass for a TD.  Ended up 64-14...game lasted forever with all the scoring and timeouts.  I think there was a mercy rule in there some where (clock kept running at one point).  MNBeev, do you know of any new rule mercy rule in Minnesota?  Back in high school we never had any.  Doesn't Iowa have the 50 point mercy rule after halftime?  Also, kickoffs into the endzone were an automatic touchback?  Anyone heard of this or is it just us crazy Southern Canadians with a rule like this.

Who was the Luther supporter on here last season that coached sophmores in Chicago???  I thought he mentioned if a team was up by a certain number in the second half then the mercy rule was a continuous clock.  Sounds like what was going on in your game up in South Canada eh!!!

Congrats WH on the victory last night. Looks like your guys had a pretty easy time of it.

I think punts that get to the endzone are auto touchbacks too.

Iowa does still have a mercy rule, but now if one team gets up by 35, they run a continuous clock the rest of the game.  No more 50 point rule.  Its good and bad, because while you do have more teams finishing whole games, teams can also run up 60 and 70 points or more, which is something that didn't really happen under the old rule.

DBJay was the Luther grad that coaches at Currie in SW Chicago.  Currie will be playing in Soldiers Field (today I think), in one of a triple header of Chicago HS teams.  Pretty cool huh!
