Great Question.
Pretty tough to just name "1" factor but I'm going to have to say turnover margin.

I'm not sure what it is exactly for college or D3 but I have read/seen that an NFL team that is +2 for the game wins 80% of the time.  That's a pretty telling stat.

Looking forward to the "2nd" debut of Coach Willis Saturday and listening to the knights come out with a victory.  I expect the defense to be sharp and provide excellent field position for the offense.

Walston,

do you know who pulled off this miraclaous feat?  "Wartburg sports a 13-1 record in its last 14 openers."

With this crappy weather we are getting I'm starting to think Heys mother nature must have known you are coming to Iowa. Hasn't every game you have been to except one been rainy and chilly?

I did not pack for crappy weather... :o

I have been to two games with less than ideal weather... vs. Central in '06 and vs. DBQ in '07.  Both Homecoming games.

Every other game has been spectacular weather...I am keeping my fingers crossed.   8)

I'm using Coe's opener at Augustana Saturday night as the first opportunity this year to camp, other than RAGBRAI, which really doesn't qualify as camping. Some would say my camper doesn't qualify as camping either, but I like it. Let the games begin!
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

DF1 you have mentioned that your coached at Pella High.  What sport did you coach?  Was it the cheer squad?

Yep. I coached the football, basketball and wrestling cheer squads. The other coach and I turned them from a stand and clap squad to a really athletic, stunting group of girls (and guys) that knew the games inside and out. Woo!

Beavers vs. the Pioneers sounds like a fight that predates college football!

I would say the Beavers (the kind with the flat tails) seldom came out on top.

;)

The beavers with flat tails were always on top.

The pioneers made hats out of them.

Best tailgating experience -- College World Series, pick a year, they have all been fabulous. The food, the fans, the atmosphere is second to none.

Second best: Bears/Packers in Chicago a couple of years ago. Both sets of fans know how to get it done.

Third: almost any Hawkeye game is great, but the Sportcenter weekend was unreal. Iowa/Ohio State was awesome -- and an all day event. Too bad the score didn't end up the way we wanted it to....

IIAC games are always fun -- I love meeting other fans before a Central victory. :)

SprtKnight, AEN, etc.

I hope to see everyone Saturday.  Pregame may depend upon the weather.  That is the nice part of having Little Warthog in town now.  If the weather is crappy we'll just wait until game time to head over to campus.

Assuming the weather is nice as predicted we hope to be camped out by the pine trees near Lot "O" or over in the park.  Just look for the black/orange flag.  Peacock Warthog called and said he got the annual supply of Orange/Black Oreos at the Cedar Falls Hy-Vee this afternoon.  Black/Orange M&Ms are packed.  The Knight head is ready.  Tomorrow I'll pick up some Hub City brew and Pepsi products.  Mrs. Little Warthog has a birthday Saturday.  Hopefully we'll have both a birthday and victory to celebrate.

I hope to run into Ben's little brother to hear about his summer with the Green Bay Packers.  Any internship there would be a neat experience, but I assume this summer was even more eventful.

I'll probably see you there.  Do you need anything else in the way of food/drinks/utensils?  I know you'll say to not bother bringing anything, but I'll feel like a complete schmuck if I'm not contributing anything to the effort.  Also, I'll drop young Shanno an email to see if he'll be stopping by or if he has to work for SID.

Three things I always look at when going over post-game stats are time of possession, turnovers, and 3rd down conversions.  If a team can win those three categories, they'll win probaby 98% of the time.  It might sound obvious, but you've got a much better chance at scoring points when your offense is on the field.  If you can't sustain drives and keep the other offense off the field, then your chances at success diminish significantly.
