why no talk about the norse who beat martin luther today 55 to 21.  tyler sherden ran for118 today with 21 carries and having 3 touchdowns and to go along with that nate rolland was 14 for 21 with 223 yards and also 3 touchdowns and also ran for 22 yards with kyle pearson having 124 yards with a touch and brett sheetz with 95 yards the offense looked to be clicking most of the game and the defense..... strugled in the first half but found themselves in the second half shutting martin luther out... marcus hendrickson helped out tying the school record for int. in a game with 3

Congrats to the other iiac victors
looking forward to other iiac posts

question for the Knights....whats the story on Dan Hammes?didnt see him in the box score
GO NORSE !!

Walston Hoover

Hammes got injured in warmups. They were planning on having him.
Millikin will win games this year. There were a lot of us concerned about the game heading into it. There corners are better than anyone we'll see in the Iowa Conference and the other 9 guys worried about stopping the run. The other story was their shifty QB who time and time again looked to be ready to go down, only to make a play.
Not trying to make excuses, this is only for the rest of the board to ponder.....I was talking to one of their coaches afterward and he said without the spring practices it would have been very tough to do defensively what they did, if not impossible. Their coverage and corners were very good.
I'm not going to go all "the sky is falling"
When the Knights get healthy and have guys practice, this will be a team going for their 4th straight conference title, but we're not there yet. Thank God for 2 non conference games.
That was a very good football team we lost to today, I'll be curious to see how the season plays out for them.

Congrats to all the teams on their wins.  Loras had a great game against a not so tough(a I remember) team.  IT is still why you play the games.  I am looking forward to hearing how the Loras-SAU goes becuase if it so happens that Loras can win, which is possible, our foreigners that come in here and say that NAIA is so much tougher can open mouth and insert foot.  To me 2 points doesnt make a dominant performance on any level so we will see how it goes next week.
Ok Ok ok lets just take this one foot at a time.....

Central fans who will be making the trip this Saturday to Arden Hills for the Bethel game: please join us in the parking lot outside the Royals stadium for the Stiftungsfestivities tailgate party. We will be starting at 10:30 a.m. Bring some food to share, especially some Dutch letters.

Since St. John's is playing Northwestern College right down the road, we will be inviting fans from all four colleges for this tailgate party. Taking the ecumenical approach. :) Hope to see a good turnout of the Dutch at the party.

Congrats to Luther on a BIG win.....I'm almost ready to admit they might be the real deal.

Dubuque impressed me by sticking close to a UW school.....curious to see how they do this week.

Wartburg.....wow, what happened?  A bit overconfident?  Overmatched?  Lack of effort?  Or are they just not that good this year?  Is a 5-5 year in store for the Warthogs?

And, give the High Roller award to Central this week for going for 2 in OT - and for making it.  Good job Dutch.

This conference continues to amaze me with the unpredictability from week to week.

I wouldn't call Luther the real deal yet also because their defense did stuggle in the 1st half. However, I was very impressed with the offense. They seemed to pick up where they left off at the end of the season last year.  Next week will be a little better challange for the Norse as they play St. Olaf who came back last year in week 2 trailing 31-0 at half to win 32-31.  I would imagine the Norse will want to put them away this year!

Good Luck to all iiac teams

Spurrier

wing-t,

what is impressive about getting our butt beat and shut out?

Why the defense ain't werkin'?

Ol' Ball Coach - 4 or 5 years ago it would have been 82-0.  This is not your father's Dubuque ball club anymore.

Do all of you guys realize that our old pals down the road at Billy Penn travel to play the University of Maine this weekend?  The same Maine team that just hung tough with Nebraska on Saturday?  Is that going to be a laugher or what?  Can you imagine we used to play these guys?  What in the world is an NAIA school doing playing a D-IAA school?  It's got to be for the $$$.

thehouse76

They better bring some body bags for that one...and the cops, that is going to be a blood bath with a capital OUCH!!  This is a big week for many schools, can WB come off a big loss and bring it? Can Loras, Central, Luther, etc. continue to play well and get the big W.  These days of practice are going to be key to making sure they get that.  Good luck

I wasn't at the Wartburg blood letting over at Millikin last weekend, but the box score tells much of the story on both sides of the ball. :-[

On defense could it be there were too many tackles being made by people stationed behind the line of scrimmage? :o  One d-lineman had a big game.  The others didn't have much to write home about. :'(  There are seniors at these spots that should be stepping up.  ;)  Hopefully this year they understand the defensive schemes. ???  I'm not sure that has always been the case with these guys. :-\

On offense I notice three things that seemed odd.  Your leading receiver is a fullback who makes nearly 1/2 your receptions and yardage. ::)  The Knights are 100% successful from the Red Zone, but they only get there once. ;)  Wartburg really seems to be a team that can step it up based on the  1 for 12 third down conversion performance. :P

Possibly we will be seeing some different faces in weeks to come.  Or possibly we will see some leadership from the seniors. ;D

I wouldn't be surprised if our average distance to go on 3rd down was 8-10 yards. The reason we threw to Thompson so much was that the recievers were completely shut down by Millikin's corners.

WalstonHoover:

Thanks for the insight.

On to happier thoughts. :D

Be sure you and Mrs. WH join us for some pre-game festivities on Saturday.  We can discuss the Cyclone win over the Hawks ;D and figure out what happened at Millikin. Mr. & Mrs. Coco will be with us and I am sure they would like to see all their Wartburg friends. :)  Little Warthog will be coming over after a command performance at Ames. ;)  He would probably like to hear your input about this year's squad.  I'm glad to hear that DutchFan1 also plans to make a guest appearance. 8) We'll try to be by the pine trees on the lot west of the stadium.  Just look for the orange/black flag on the orange flag pole.  I hope the rest of the Wartburg D3.com Post Pattern posters can join us.  We should have plenty of food and beverages.  ::)

We sure would like to see Slick and all the rest of the Slickster clan.  Please extend our invitation to them.

Rest easy Wartburg fans.  Last Saturday was only one game in a long season.

BV has a very nice passing attack, fast WR's and a solid QB.  It should be a good season in the IIAC for the Beavers.

Looks like Central played a nice game and pulled out the win.

I'm looking forward to the game this weekend and another Bethel win.

Warthog, just to add my $.02 in here on what you touched on. Having a little knowledge of how Wartburg's D is structured you're not  going to have d-lineman making 6-7 tackles/game very often.  If they do, that's a bonus and or the o-line isn't very good.
Most of the time, they're going to have 3-4.  Simply put, their role is to take on blocks and plug running lanes so the LB's and in Wartburg's case,  safeties  make  tackles.  Making a tackle 2-3 yds from the line of scrimmage is a  good play.  Giving up plays of 20+ yards is what kills you.

As far as Billy plaiying Maine, of course it's for the $. Also, Maine probably had a hard time filling their schedule and had to reach.   They have about as much business playing Maine as Drake does playing UNI.  I don't think many people realize that drake is a glorified d3 program. They are D-1AA NON-scholarship.  I would love to see them play a top IIAC team every year because IMO, they have the  same caliber  of athletes.  Ask Coach Niemann, he would know by coaching there, UNI and Simpson

also, I would love to  take bets on wartburg being 5-5 this year.... please let me know if you're interested....

Lance Harbor

Dave - Yes, you're right about D-IAA non-scholarship basically being the same as D-III.  Drake would still finish in the upper half of the IIAC, but I agree, Drake's level and UNI's level of FB are not the same.

As far as your bet...that looks pretty enticing right now, but I'll hold my judgment until this weekend.  I still have a feeling this group has it in them to get things turned around.
