The Show

Sitting at home for a bit since the Freshman game got rained out and Varsity preparations will start up in an hour...thought I'd give a little props to the Wartburg offense.  After many years watching that dang trips set with the slot receiver stacked directly behind the other rack up the yards, I implemented it with my freshmen squad this year.  We didn't actually run it in game conditions until last week and the first play in that formation went for six!  It helps to have some personnel that can run it, but it is a nice little play/series of plays.  And even though it pained me to say it, we just called the formation in the huddle, Wartburg Left or Wartburg Right.  :P

I used it in Flag Football with Rev. 3 "in the Basket" we called it.  Our formation call was Overload Left, Overload Right.  He is a shifty runner though not blazingly fast and he made many long runs out of that formation.

It was a way to get the ball quickly out to the edge away from the pile, and see if you could make a kid miss.

I see it also as a way to bunch up defenders and get receivers open when the defenders pick themselves as the receivers cross off the line.  One of our local High Schools, Oceanside, one of the top Div. 2 teams in the State does this very well.

Well we are a little slow on here today so I will try to create some conversation.  Which one of these senarios is the most likely to occur an why?

Cornell wins a conference game in 2008

Wartburg win the IIAC title

Luther wins the IIAC title

Buena Vista wins the IIAC title

There is a 3 way tie for the conference title between Luther, Buean Vista, and Wartburg.

I will go with the 3 way tie because I think BV will win out, Wartburg will win out, and Luther will drop one close game.  I think the Dutch lose another close game and the rest is a mismash in the middle.

My crystal ball is different....

Simpson beats Wartburg, Dubuque, Loras but loses to Central.  Record 5-3
Central beats Cornell, Loras, BV and Simpson.  Record 6-2
BV beats Coe, Cornell but loses to Central.  Record 6-2
Wartburg beats Luther and Dubuque but loses to Simpson.  Record 6-2
Luther beats Coe, Cornell and Loras but loses to Wartburg.  Record 6-2

Its a four-way-tie for the title.  If the most recent teams are not qualifiers, and Luther has the game on BV....LUTHER IS THE AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER FOR THE PLAYOFFS !!!!!  :):):)

MIKE DURNIN IS THE COY.

There are so many combinations in this its ridiculous, I think I could find a 5 way 5-3 record tie in there too.  Since Central is winning out though,  ;D the obvious scenarios would be the Wartburg/Luther winner sitting alone with one loss, or a three way tie, with that winner losing one more and Central sharing with someone.  OK, so I'm ridiculously biased, and my red shades don't allow for any more Dutch loses.

BB:  We'll be there but plans have changed some.  We're getting a late start so we will probably be having tailgate light.  Adult beverages but no grilling etc.  Your buddy's father-in-law won't be making the trip.  Apparently they are making wedding plans for the little sister this weekend.  Clint got out of coming over here to go hunting, but the father of the bride to be wasn't so lucky.  Not sure where we will park, perhaps we'll see you there.

How is Tommy Breitbach related?
2nd cousin, near as I can figure. Those Breitbachs are a prodigious bunch.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Wartburg Fan

Want to wish all the teams in the IIAC Good Luck today except Simpson  ;D ;D ;D
Hope for no serious injuries and for everyone traveling today to watch their team play to have a safe trip.

GO KNIGHTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

doolittledog

Another wish for a safe weekend of football.  Fun times, good football, and hopefully the Florida and Cali players for UD don't get alarmed at what could be their first sight of snow in the air later today ;D

Another hope for a injury free weekend. Hopefully the Knights do better than the last long road trip.

Only if they are from southern California.  Having grown up in northern California, it would snow in my hometown about every 15 years.

Seriously, skiiing in the Sierras was only about an hour away.

Anyway, late Fall in northeast Iowa could be a shock to those thin-blooded freshmen.

Now let's have UD go beat the crap out of Loras.

GO SPARTANS!

And that is coming from a minister ;D  See what this rivalry will do to a person!!!

I decided I couldn't watch this game on the Loras website.  Just wouldn't be right to do that.  So will listen to it on the UD website...or go out and mow for what is probably the last time this year.  The mower has been broken since the 4th quarter of the Central game 2 weeks ago.

Good article in the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald about the "Rivalry by the River" game today.

The Dubuque Telegraph-Herald also has a nice story about my Union Knights...coached by former BV HC Joe Hadachek knocking Maquoketa out of playoff contention.  Union, in their first season in 3A finishes 7-2 on the season.

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=220479

Also in the paper is a story about Dubuque Senior playing their season ending game at Chalmers Field and the possibility of Senior and Hempstead playing future games at Chalmers.

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=220478

The stories are semi-IIAC related ;)
