Congrats, Wartburg, on wrapping up the title today.  Who picked BV for second in the pre-season?

And speaking of the preseason, I see that Cornell has failed to win their two games, much less challenge Central for the championship.  Things move way too quickly on this board for casual follower to keep up with, so can I ask if the king of mindless boosterism (can't remember his Cornell-supporting name, but he was a funny guy) still around?  That guy was a classic.

No he left half way through the season and has not been heard from since.  Showme was his name.  Showme has left and has not come back.  To be fair to Cornell they have shown improvement this year.  Not enough to talk the smack that Showme did but they are improving.

Congratulations to the Knights on winning the IIAC.  I hope you can rest and heal up and get prepared this week for a good playoff showing.  Time to peak and do the IIAC proud.

I Think Showme pretty much checked out after the Grinnell game.

3000 listed as the attendance.

Good lord, there wasn't 300 in that place.  I understand padding attendance, but it should at least be partly grounded in reality.

I don't know I could have missed it but looking back it looks like he was on September 22.

Next weekend, Cornell and Dubuque both pick up wins.  The IIAC ends up with a three way tie for second: Buena Vista, (Luther or Loras) and (Central or Simpson).

ShowMe sees the win over a second place team as a sign from above and predicts Cornell will win the IIAC and be the West's representative in the NCAA D3 semi-finals in 2009.

ShowMe, I salute your loyalty and enthusiasm.  We razz you about it, but I'm not sure those of us who support teams with regular or even occasional winning seasons can fully appreciate what it means to have that much fire for a team with such a dismal record.  Keep it up.  Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

doolittle:

Maybe the guy taking attendance counted those guys in the dorm shouting out the Hawkeye scores.  He probably also passed through the rec center to count people watching out the window.  Then he went to Joe's, The Other Place and The Fainting Goat to count heads there.  Then you have the people driving by on 12th Avenue who may have glanced at the score board.  Finally there were probably two dozen or so students at the library who don't even know Wartburg has a football team, but they walked within a hundred yards of the ticket gate on their way so he counted them too.  Add that all together and you might get 3,000.

I've already given you +K today warthog or you would get some more from me ;D

I can tell you if I was a student in that dorm that is where I would have been as well.  That might not be a bad idea to count them.  Plus those inside the W.  And if the soccer championships were played in Waverly maybe count those as well.  I do know for a fact that some left the game and went to the Goat...so maybe later counting EVERYONE in there wouldn't be a bad idea.  I still don't know if you would get near 3,000...if that is indeed the number they came up with.  I am fine with padding attendance...I just don't think there is anything wrong with accepting there was terrible weather today and coming up with a somewhat lower number.  I think they reported 2,100 two years ago when Dubuque played at Wartburg in similar weather...maybe reporting 1,200 today would have been more reasonable...but not 3,000 :o

I know you were warmer sitting at home in Muscatine.  Hope your wife didn't give you too many work projects to keep you away from the computer and watching the Wartburg game today.

Okay folks its getting to end of the season, who are you picking for the following:

COY:  Anderson-he ALMOST took the Bevoers to the top of the IIAC after 30 years of absence.
POY:  McGrew-a RB than any IIAC team would love to have.Biggest disapointment: BV not winning the IIAC after getting SO close and letting Wartburg back into it.
Biggest turning Point in the season for any team:  Coe - getting robbed of the Loras win by the refs and never really recovering fully after that.  :(
Your favorite IIAC mascott:  Charlie Kohawk  ;D
Best food and drink after a game:  Irish Democrat Grille in Cedar Rapids  :P

In the words of Bobby Knight: "I mean, I deeply hope we beat their ass today."

Picking up for ShowMe on the start of the last week of the season...(Maybe it's the Sierra Nevada or Arrogant Bastard Ale doing the talking)

Next year:  It's MUC, UW-W, MH-B....and...The Rams!  Mark it down.

It all starts with beating the Beavers this next weekend!
You can't leave me....all the plants will die.

COY:  BV Coach Anderson share with Willis.
POY:  McGrew - Loras woulda been hurtin' otherwise...meant more to his team than any other player.
Biggest turning Point in the season for any team:  Cornell - Jr. not able to corral ball in the corner of the endzone late in the game vs. Grinnell...It would've been a circus catch but could've been worth some serious momentum.
Your favorite IIAC mascott:  The Ram with the dangling...participle (look it up Coe Fan)   :D
Best food and drink after a game:  In-n-Out Double-Double with grilled onions or a Tommy's Chili Burger.  With a S-N Pale Ale.  Hey...it's SoCal.   8)

I'd kill for an In-n-Out Double-Double!
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

I pretty much agree, especially on biggest turning point, but there's a new game in CR. Best burger in town is Hamburger Mary's. Check it out before or after your next visit.

Newshound

Boy, Wartburg dodged a big-time bullet Saturday. In terms of the positives for the Knights, the crummy conditions allowed them to get Ryan Hoerner (tight end) involved in the passing game. He had like 5 or 6 catches for 66 yards -- something that hasn't happened too much this season. Also, Harvey's TD run in overtime was impressive with his ability to spin off a defender. The kid has shown a lot the past two weeks, and the line has played much better of late. At 5-7 and 165 pounds, I'm not sure his body is durable for 40 carries every week, but the conditions called for it Saturday.

On the flip side, the defense struggled mightily against the quarterback draw. If Wartburg sees an athletic quarterback, they're in trouble. Guys like Jermar Jackson, Dallas Bush, Chris Reynolds (to an extent) and now Hansen have given them fits the past couple of years.

It will be interesting to see how this team responds after an off week.
