What fat cats went to Grinnell? That is HUGE! What is the school like, as in facilities, types of students, and those sorts of things?
His name is Warren Buffett.

That's just who I wondering about. Lucky Grinnell.

The University of Oregon has amazing athletic training facilities because Phil Knight went there. That's also why the football team has the variety of Nike unis every year, some of which are pretty weird.

It does pay to have rich alums.

suprised about Loras as well... the founder of Krispie Kreams went there, and used to donate every year tons of money - and none of it went to the athletic program... probably doesnt donate much anymore, being that KK is probably out of business

Buffett is not a Grinnell alum.  However, he is a life trustee and assists in managing the endowment.  Grinnell also invested 10% of the capital to found Intel (which was co-founded by a Grinnell alum)--a move which I'm sure greatly contributed to their wealth.

I would also like to add that endowments are not typically used to fund capital improvements.  An endowment, by definition, is intended to provide income through asset growth in order to help an institution maintain positive cash flow.  Most endowments are also limited to specific uses, usually to honor the wishes of the donor who funded the endowment.  An example would be BV's science center.  BV claims to have a $26 million science center--in reality, they have a $16 million science center with a $10 million endowment that is used to maintain the building.

I was there in '88.  Nice stadium, very small town.  The college has a higher population than the town by far.  Went to a cafe to eat the morning of the Central-Whitewater game and just meekly ate while the locals laughed about the playoff team without a QB.  What could I say, I had to agree with them.  Would have loved to have gone back after we won though.   ;D ;D ;D

I didn't make it up there for the more recent game with them two or three years ago.

Coe's Bean Counters probably see it differently -- If I remember correctly (and I may not) I thought Coe had one of the smallest endowments of all Iowa private colleges.  (I'm a little busy today to look it up, but this is a research project that has Doolittle written all over it.)
Endowment values as reported by the 2007 Voluntary Support of Education survey by the Council for Aid to Education:
Grinnell College $1,718,313,000
Buena Vista University $155,564,000
Luther College $113,807,000
Central College $82,138,000
Simpson College $81,647,000
Coe College $80,469,000
Cornell College $77,623,000
University of Dubuque $73,000,000
Wartburg College $48,404,000
Loras College $30,074,000

They aren't any where near those amounts anymore.  The same stock market that is killing your retirement fund is also killing endowments.   :'( :'( :'(  It's going to be a tough year for schools.

I'm not sure of the exact dates, but these are some of the Central changes that I would guess have taken place within the past ten years:
Education-Psychology building in progress - going for LEED certification
Renovation of Scholte Hall
Obtained and renovated Webster Elementary School into Physical Plant
Weller Center for Business and International Education
LEED Certified addition to Vermeer Science Center
LEED Certified Pod housing
First Pod housing
NEW BRIDGE - A Central Icon was removed
New soccer fields
New track and football field
New gym seating
New gym floor - may be on the cusp of 10 year time frame

And they will be obtaining the Lutheran Church in the next year or so.

For a week leading up the a playoff game, conversation is pretty weak.

Wartburg fans, what's the thought on UW-SP? They beat defending national champions 17-16, but lost to a 3-7 UW-River Falls. Will this be a one-and-done trip to the post season for the Knights, or will Wartburg pull out a win? Thoughts? Projections?
Stats look similar to Wartburg. Running for about 70 yards a game and passing for over 200.
Defense averaging 15 ppg, with an o scoring around 22.
No dominating by any means but also probably more of an indicator of the competition they play.

I love the IIAC as much as the next guy on this board but I would have to agree with you in that the competition is much greater in the WIAC. They benefit a lot from there being little to no D2 schools in the state and I think only 1 or 2 D1 football programs in the state. Also, all of the WIAC schools attendance is much larger than any IIAC school, and the cost for in state is much cheaper than the private schools in the IIAC...not sure if you can compare stats much at all.

Fair point, but remember that the WIAC schools can cost on average half as much as an IIAC school.  This point is no longer valid, but they also used to allow redshirting.

I must say, this alum is quite proud of Central's committment to building/creating the LEED buildings on campus. I'm quite happy that my academic institution of choice has made such a concerted effort at making our campus so green, contributing to the sustainable energy movement. I think that it's important to encourage environmental stewardship, and I am quite excited about the strides Central is making.

What are other campuses doing?

So where will Wartburg fans go to tailgate before Dutch/Knight football games?  It seems our friends at the church have been a little more tolerant regarding consumption of adult beverages on their lawn than have the powers to be at Central College.

Stale, marked down, black/orange Oreos are hard to find.  If the Warthogs make the trip Saturday it appears we will be putting plain Oreos in the Knight head.

If Central College purchases the Peace Lutheran Church property next to campus, they will probably have to obtain the services of an Indian medicine man and a Roman Catholic exorcist to clear the area of evil spirits.  ;)

On a side note, has anyone seen or been to Whitewater's stadium??  :o

Was up there for Indoor National Track back in '04.  Their indoor track/basketball/volleyball arena shares a parking lot with the football stadium, and it was pretty impressive looking from the lot.  Not just the size of the place, but the whole accompanying complex - it looked like they had enough room under the stadium for both locker rooms, coaches offices, weight rooms, and a Pizza Hut.

Klompen is right, the rest of the town of Whitewater isn't much to write home about.  We (myself, Wartburg's SID, and Lil Warthog's old roommate) actually had to stay a few miles down the road in Janesville due to limited hotel space.

Random Tangent Alert:  Lil Warthog's old roommate still loves to tell this story from that weekend.  I was suffering from a brutal sore throat that weekend.  Felt like I was swallowing razor blades the whole time.  To try to remedy this, I was on a steady diet of Halls and whatever I could find to drink.  Before we left Janesville, we stopped to fill up with gas and I grabbed a liter bottle of Gatorade.  When we stopped again a couple hours later just across the river from Dubuque.  He and I both hit the head, and the time it took him to leak, wash his hands, and buy a bottle of soda and some snack mix was the same amount of time it took me to fully drain the lizard.  We were in a track mindset all weekend, and he kept saying that must have been my "personal record piss."

The players didn't dress under the stands.  The dressed in buildings on the South end of the field.  (I may be wrong on my directions it could be the North end)
