Double Bonus Obscure College Score: Wisconsin-Whitewater 34, Wartburg 17 (Division III playoffs). Located in Waverly, Iowa, Wartburg offers a course about the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The course description reports, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer has become a focus of cultural and feminist studies ... showings of the series are a course requirement."

from the Tuesday Morning QB on Page 2 of ESPN.com
Didn't know that course existed. Sounds like a May Term course.

I don't remember that one either.  And I probably took all the fluff classes that Wartburg offered.

But Hey...sounds like a good class.

Well I'll be damned...
http://faculty.wartburg.edu/lindgrene/lessons_of_buffy_the_vampire_syllabus_W08.htm

Its one of the current IS 101 offerings.  IS classes are required of all freshmen/sophomores (101 for the frosh, 201 for the sophs) at Wartburg.  Each section of the course deals with some common material (I think one of the Harry Potter books was the common material a couple years back), while the second component of the course is up to the professor and can focus on a wide range of topics from Stress to Banned Books to the 2008 Election to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, evidently.

If I remember right, my IS 101 class was something along the lines of Sports in Society.  I know we read the book that told of the formation and early success of the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise (which was especially relevant since this was Winter Term 2002, just after the DBs had won the World Series).  My IS 201 class was some feminist/women's studies kind of BS because all the sections I wanted to take were full.  Turned out to not be so bad though, since there were about 20 chicks to the 3 guys in the class.  You can tell by my use of the word "chicks" that I obviously learned a lot.

That is stellar.  Where was IS when I went to Wartburg.  No... we had the old-school courses.  Person and Society, Human Expression and Foundations of Science.  Granted, in Human Ex., it was a semester watching popular (and not-so-popular) films, but we did get to watch The Fifth Element and Life is Beautiful... we also had to watch Amadeus.  Not all sunshine and roses.

So... could this be a new IIAC slogan?

IIAC: We offer courses on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
IIAC: Representing on TMQ.
IIAC: We're 50% right 100% of the time.
The only thing capable of cutting Chuck Norris is Chuck Norris...

I'll admit it.  I took a Jan term class at Linfield that they only offered one time.  A social issues classes called "Star Trek: Peoples and Culture".  It actually was a great class as we tackled topics such as dying w/ dignity, race relations, politics, etc.

BTW, you cannot exceed a warp speed of 10.

Off the record...I did manage to smuggle 25 back into the states, so I might be inclined to part ways with one for you this Christmas season.

I'd gladly take that as a substitute for the hot dogs you promised everyone earlier this fall.   ;)

Also, isn't footballdaddy in the law enforcement industry in some capacity?  We better keep this on the DL.

footballdaddy doesn't have anything to do with law Enforcement except to give some of them a hard time every now and then. I'm the one that had something to do with law enforcement. the key word is had. (retired) but still know alot of them so I will forget Klop's statement, I like a good cigar every now and then if you get what I'm saying.

Little know fact in the law enforcement world.  When interviewing child molesters, conversation about the persons likely hood to watch Star Trek are common questions.

WC11 not saying you are a child molester by any means, just thought some might find that interesting.

Breaking news out of Illinois.  Our governor was arrested this morning on federal corruption charges.  It is quite interesting to watch the press conference and see how messed up the Illinois politics really are!

Messed up but business as usual.

He really screwed up if he tried to shake down Jesse Jackson Jr.

From the sounds of it he was aucitoning it off.  I don't think he was only waiting for one offer but the highest offer.  He is a treat.  You know what they say you deserve the ones that get elected.  For better or worse.

Was only a matter of time before Blago went down for something.  On the long list of corrupt Chicago pols, he's easily towards the top of the list.  Probably not quite as back as Old Man Daley, but still up there.

Big difference.  Old Man Daley got crap done and so has his son.  No doubt he took part in some shady business, but it all benefited the city and beautification of it.  Not many large cities boast the beauty and recreation that Chicago offers its residents.

Gov. Rod Blajagoff was only interested in serving himself and making himself money.  But he is still the governor of Illinois and has all the power even though he is in federal custody.  The state would have to impeach him to rid him of his powers.

Word on the street is he was trying to sell Obama's senate seat or appoint himself to it to make a run for the White House in 2016!  Think about that one.

Wow...I did not know that.  Thankfully I haven't watched a full episode of Star Trek since that class (14 years ago) but I did listen to Howard Stern interview William Shatner yesterday.  Stern did get Shatner to admit he's mess around with weed in his youth, is still good buddies with Spock, and still doesn't need the blue little helper to get it up.

Anyone take any "cake" classes in college?
I took Football theory first semester of my freshman year and got a B. Stupid coverages. Willis was not an easy prof to have. He was a very good student in school, pretty sure he won some academic awards.
May Term courses were the best.
Freshman year, did an independent study with a senior who needed the credit to graduate. Did a video touting Wartburg's new (at that time) IS classes. The senior did the work, I carried equipment on the off chance we were doing work. Got my credit for it.
Sophomore year of May Term I took History of WWII and absolutely loved it. That class is what made me decide to get a minor in History.
Junior year of May Term was our European tour for the Wartburg Choir (Dsquared will have some memories of that). I had a small camera and taped every once in a while and got a credit for that.
Senior year of May Term was the best class Wartburg offers. Outdoor recreation with Ras'lin coach Jim Miller. Basically, different outdoor activities every day. Rollerblading/biking on Waverly's trails, and getting ready for the final, a 5 day canoe trip down the Buffalo River in Arkansas. AWESOME class. Every June, we have a semi "reunion" of that class, but float down the Iowa River at Steamboat Rock. Many guys are with us that didn't take the class though.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

I think IIAC motto fits the model set by Readlyn, IA, who claim a bunch of nice folks and 1 old grump:  We'd be "70 Football fans and 1 clown"  We can vote for the clown each year.

And when we vote, in honor of Chicago politics:  "Vote early-Vote often"    ;D

Unfortunately, there were no IIAC first-teamers ... but a number of second and third team.

Congrats to all!

There was a former Wartburg PE teacher who had a .5 credit May term bicycling class. This teacher would lead the rides around Waverly -before the Rail trail was open..... on a MOPED. Seeing this above average size teacher with a pack of college kids NOT trying to pass and leave in the dust was classic.

Then there was the always popular WALKING class. I think in the advanced class the students were taught to walk + chew gum. ;D

Not that I would ever admit to taking my academics lightly, but I strategically planned my Senior Seminar around a certain prof -- he was the media prof, and the class was dubbed X Files 401. We watched episodes of the first and second season and wrote papers. It was tough, let me tell you. :)

Damn Communication requirements. ;)
