Walston,

Your attitude and my sons were a lot alike.  He said why do I want to work hard for maybe a shot at time my fifth year?  He wanted a chance to play as a sophmore and he got it.  I think that for some kids the satisfaction does come from being on a D1 team and being involved.  I think that some kids have a dream and riding the pine is ok with them.  Some others as Coocoo mentioned change their minds and go to a smaller school to play.  Some do like you and my son and play for 3-4 years.  I think it is an individual decision.  In the case of some kids what IIAC school offers Ag studies?  With that note some walk on at ISU as there is no major for that in the IIAC.

And don't forget that for some kids it may financial - the family may be hard-pressed to give up the scholarship money.

Unless they sent their kid to Wartburg!   :D

Ooops?!?!  Did I just write that?!?!     :o

Just an old, dusty rumor.  Pay no heed.   8)

With all this talk of recruiting, thought you boys would be interested in a link that was posted on the WIAC page today.  Seems U of D's new coach has been a little busy back in his home state.   ;)

It is so discouraging to see kids ride the bench for four or five years just to say they were a Hawkeye or Gator or whatever team.  I wish more of them would go places they could play, like the IIAC, or OAC, or WIAC, or whatever small school and start for four years.

Can someone explain why it is better to sit for a larger school than play for a smaller school?

Carey Bender was smart for an example, he red shirted at UNI, figured out he was not going to play the next year and transferred to Coe and ended up a Gagliardi winner.

In my opinion when I look back at college I would want to remember playing not sitting.
That's up to each kid. Having an opportunity to run out in front of 50,60,70,or even 80 thousand fans and play and travel to some of the best stadiums in the country is appealing for some guys. Me? I figured I could travel to those stadiums after I got done playing. Wasn't going to spend the most athletic years of my life getting beat up on the scout team. I would have rather won a lot of games and run out in front of 5 thousand.

Hoover I am going to wave the flag on this one long and hard.  Are you telling me that if Iowa would have walked into your house and offered you a scholarship that you would have turned it down to be a Knight?  Free tuition, room, and board for 5 years and would rather pay for your college at Wartburg?  I don't buy that for a second.  I would hope that every kid dreams of playing at the highest level and then has a heart to heart with ones self.  If you told me that you would have turned down a walk on to play at Wartburg okay, but to pass on a full ride on the chances of riding the pine for 5 years is a bit of a stretch.

DF1...Your son was a great QB at Central, but I think he was realistic in his abilities as I was in mine.  D1 team are not recruiting 6 foot lineman from Des Moines or 5'10" QB's from Eldora.  Your son was a fine player and one of the best Central has had, but again if a large school was offering him a free ride why wouldn't you want your son take that opportunity?

I personally paid for every cent of my college and I still am today.  For those of you who's parents paid or if you are a parent who paid I would think financial responsibility would have to come into question at some point, wouldn't it?

Iowa had a top 10 recruiting season in 2005 and almost none of those guys became very successful.  The last 2 years have supposedly been bad recruiting years but we have seen Jewel Hampton and Tyler Sash among others that have stepped right in and done well for the team.

I have no problem at all with the recruiting job Ferentz is doing.  Now, if I could just find some news regarding Dubuque and the rest of the IIAC!!!

Great post Dog...Shonn Grenne was a 2 star recruit.  Now he will be a first round draft choice.  Bruce Nelson was a walk on and look what happened to him.

Let me add that back when the Cornhuskers where rolling they relied heavily on walk ons and turning talent once they got into the program.  Kind of what Iowa does dont you think.  BTW:  This is a team that returns 40 of 49 players from the 2 deep at the Outback Bowl where they laid a whooping on the supposed far superior SEC!

Thanks for the info.  That is good news to see coach Z has been hitting the recruiting trails...and having some success.

Hell No! I would have welcomed a full-ride in a heartbeat. The conversation was about the guys that walk-on that don't have a realistic opportunity to play.

I must have missed the walk on part.  I re-read the previous page and must have missed it again.  I just wanted to make sure that the Orange colored glasses did have some light coming through them ;)  I guess two karma hits in the last hour is my punishment for even thinking of something so silly ::)

I can understand if a kid grew up a fan of a school.  And that coaching staff asked him to walk on.  It would be very tempting to try to make it.  And Iowa is a school that has had a history of taking walk ons and turning them into very good players.  The selfish part of me wants these kids to go to our D3 schools and get a chance to shine on the field for 3-4 years and have a great time.  Though, the thought of Cyclone fan Walston Hoover mulling over a schollie offer from Iowa does make me chuckle.  And also makes me wonder if he would have gone to Wartburg regardless of an offer from Iowa.  Something tells me he would have just felt dirty pulling on the black and gold of Iowa instead of the cardinal and gold of ISU or orange and black or Wartburg.

I don't know anything about Wisconsin football.
Is Milwaukee Bay View any good?
Looks like about their whole team is heading to UD and no one else from there is going anywhere else.

Fortunately at that point in time there is a very good chance that if Iowa would have offered me, ISU would have been fighting just as hard.

Walston, Bay View was 7-3 overall last season and averages 6 wins a season (10 game season) over the past 8 years. They have advanced to the first round of the D1 state playoffs for the last couple of years, but have never won a game (they are usually paired with a top seed, that should tell you something).
Washington, with 3 players on the UD recruit list, struggles even more, averaging 3 wins, with no playoff appearences, in the same period.  City Conference football in Milwaukee is low grade...they do produce an occasional D1 prospect, but generally it's a rather weak brand of football. The comment was made on the WIAC page, and is probably true, that this UD list of Milwaukee City Conference prospects is probably greater than the sum that will be recruited in the WIAC this or any year!

Thank you to the WIAC guys for coming over here and filling us in on the Wisconsin recruits.  Much appreciated.

I am not sure what to think about that list of UD recruits.  I like that Zwiefel has hit the recruiting trail and has kids coming in.  I like that he has hit an area that so far has been under recruited by IIAC schools.  BUT, is he bringing in kids just to fill out a roster?  Have a bunch of kids left the program?  Does he see something in these kids that other coaches have overlooked?  Are these big city kids that will run for home after 3 months in Dubuque?  Do I just need to relax and not really care about this and just show up to 3 or 4 games next fall and have a fun time cheering on the team...win or lose?  Probably.  Still fun to look at this stuff and play the guessing game though.

Thanks again to the WIAC folks.  They had this link on their board this morning.

The new special teams/DB coach at UD is the former high school coach of all those Bay View kids coming into the program.

Would be nice if the UD website updated the coaching positions a little bit.  But, I suppose that isn't really that big of a deal.
