Two weekends - two national championships.   ;D

Not a bad 8 day stretch for Wartburg.   8)

Congratulations to the Knights women's in-door track & field team.

I guess Wartburg is to be congratulated on their athletic accomplishments.  But I hear the academic faculty is beginning to rumble about it......questioning the over-emphasis on athletics to the sacrifice of academics.  The "W" center is an issue, salaries paid to coaches, academic minded alumni questioning the direction of the school.  Perhaps there is a negative to the multiple championships if the faculty/alumni have questions.

Something that has dampened the rumbling was retention rates were looked into and athlete retention from year 1 to year 2 and 4 year rates are higher for athletes than for non-athletes. Who knows how the new college president will feel about sports but I would think that would be asked about during the interview process.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

DBQ65'  thanks for setting up the tournament challenge for b-ball.  This should be pretty entertaining.

Lets try and knock Purple down a few pegs after his run away victory during bowl season!

I can name a lot of these students, and I would guess over half of them are athletes.
Would they have come to Wartburg had they not had the opportunity to play a sport on top of getting a great education? I would like to think so, but the truth is, probably not.

These are the numbers I got from the Wartburg admissions department site concerning Wartburg graduates over the last eight years. I'm not an expert on acceptance rates at medical professions schools, but these numbers don't seem so bad.

Medical School-79 of 86 applicants (92%)
Physical Therapy School-42 of 44 (95%)
Dental School-20 of 22 (91%)
Optometry School-11 of 11 (100%)
Veterinary Medicine School-13 of 14 (93%)
Occupational Therapy School-12 of 12 (100%)
Chiropractic School-20 of 20 (100%)
Pharmacy School-14 of 14 (100%)

You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Seriously?? How can they say this with a straight face? Do you honestly think they track ALL of the students who have applied to medical school or just the smart ones who got admitted? If you applied to a medical school and got rejected, would you tell the admissions office or an academic dept?

Klopenhiemer

I think you could make this claim for a lot of schools.  Debt is being scrutinized at all time high.  WH, you being a man in the financial field can understand that.  I think if times were different and the world was booming we would not hear this.

People are tightening the belt buckle and taking a look at everything around them.  Not just their own lives.

BTW:  The point about employing ministers is a bit far fetched.  Does anyone think they are going bitch about a clerygman's salary vs. the football coaches salary.  At a religious based institution I don't think anyone is going  to mess with the man who preaches the lords word.

Hoover I like you a lot, and I am not trying to be a dick on this one but come on.  You can name a lot of these students?  There are 217 students listed on this list.  Roughly 12% of the Wartburg student population in any given year.

I sell for a living and name recognition with face is a must in my field.  I do have the ability to match a face with a business card, but to say that I would know what 100+ students are doing since graduation, or to say that I know 100+ and whether or not they applied to some post secondary education would be a stretch.  Just trying to dive a deeper into this one.  Maybe I was not the social butterfly that you are! :D

I placed a phone call this morning to Wartburg as a follow up to your question concerning  the tracking of students being accepted to medical profession schools.

The application process for these professional schools is in fact tracked by the college for every student who has transcripts forwarded to a professional school, gets recommendations from the various science departments, etc.  Any graduate who applies for acceptance at a health related professional school is in the calculation.  Applying to attend a school for post graduate studies in the medical arts isn't like applying for auto tech training at DMACC.   The undergraduate college, be it Wartburg, Luther, Simpson etc. is intimately involved in the application process for students heading on for post graduate studies.

You are correct in that the numbers for Wartburg might not be accurate.  That is because the numbers for the 2009 graduates were not in the calculation on the web-site.  If they were the percentage for acceptance to medical school would be even better.  Last year all eleven Wartburg graduates who applied for medical school were accepted at a medical school.

My only question is this.....if these numbers are legit, why is Wartburg not at the top of college rankings for IIAC schools or schools nationally for that matter?

Very good facilities/great placement after college/great athletics...why not more national praise for Wartburg and why would Cornell/Luther be considered better academic institutions by the rankings I see yearly.  Just curious........

I don't want to sound pompous, but I know a thing or two about applying to professional school. Here's my next question....do they simply take the students at their word? It would be very easy for a student to say, "Ahhh, yeah, I was accepted, but I'm not going to attend." Even when the student was denied. Or do they have to see the acceptance letter? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but they'd still be relying on the students' word. The only totally accurate way to know would be for Wartburg to call the schools. They wouldn't be able to ask about specific applicants, but schools could tell them how many Wartburg students applied and were admitted.

I just find it hard to believe that 20 out of 22 students were admitted to Iowa or Minnesota for dentistry school when the posted acceptance rate at Iowa is around 10% and Minnesota is 15%.

In case you missed yesterday's post ... below is the message about getting into the IIAC group on ESPN's Tournament Challenge.

So far, the following have signed up:  UD Spartans (yours truly) Klopenheimer, doolittledog, The Show, dutchfan1, and The Mayne Event.

You have until the first tip-off on Thursday to get signed up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay ... ESPN's Tournament Challenge is out ... and the IIAC Forever group is all set up.

Join us in the field of 65/64 and see if you can pick the winner of this year's D-1 March Madness.

Click on the following link:http: //games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage

If you played "Bowl Mania" last December/January, you already have a Member Name and Password.  If you don't remember them ... or you didn't play last college bowl season ... you will have to sign up again (its easy and its free).

Then you will be all set to pick this year's NCAA National Champion in that "other" division.

If the link doesn't work (my understanding of technology being what it is ... then go to www.espn.go.com ... look for someplace that says "Tournament Challenge" and click on that.  Then you should have the right page to sign-in or sign-up.

I'll be watching here to see if there are in problems you report with getting on board.  If there is a hitch in the process, the group you are looking for is IIAC Forever ... and the password is IIAC 2009.

Good luck to all.

Klop- I was part of 2 of the largest groups on campus with the Wartburg Football team (150 in a given year) and The Wartburg choir (90 in a given year) on top of that, I was the sports director for the campus radio station, assistant SD for the TV station, and wrote for the paper. I made it my business to know the names, faces and majors of student athletes. I also had 2 brothers go to Wartburg after I did, so yes, I actually do know what a very high percentage of the former athletes at Wartburg are up to, not just the ones that went to Med schools.

SK probably even knows more people than I do and what they are up to, and he was "just" a media member. (plus he had extra time to get to know them  ;) )

Well I guess you had more time on your hands than a low life like me did.  I guess between football, working at a tire shop changing semi tires to pay bills, homework, study sessions, and sleep I did not have time to do anything else let alone worry about what 217 plus students were doing post graduation.  Like you said at one time, every coach in the IIAC knows who Waltson Hoover is so it does not surprise me you know so much about everyone.
