Christ has risen!

If he saw his shadow, does that mean we get a few more weeks of winter?

Anyone remember Ricky Legree from Cornell, because he is becoming a heck of a rugby player for the CR Headhunters.

I know Ricky well...he is from Oceanside, and we still keep in touch.  He is a very nice young man and was a very good football player for the Rams.  Is he still the RB coach for the Kohawks?

Before that he was an outstanding football player and all-around athlete for El Camino HS.  But the most remarkable thing about Ricky...ask anybody who has played with him or worked with him from California to Iowa...teachers, coaches or teammates...and they will all say the same thing:  What a great kid and what a pleasure it was/is to have had the opportunity to know him.

As president of the Cedar Rapids Headhunters I must agree with you.

I hope he is no longer coaching for Coe, we need him on the pitch this fall.

Not too thrilled that I have to agree with a Cornell fan.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Been a bad week for baseball folks with Iowa ties.  First Nick Adenhart of the Angels dies in that car wreck after making his ML debut.  He had played for the CR Kernels just a couple years ago.  Then UNI officially cut their baseball program.  And today Hall of Fame announcer and U or Iowa alum Harry Kalas passed away.  He also had an Iowa Conference tie, having attended Cornell before Iowa:  http://news.cornellcollege.edu/2009/04/13/harry-kalas-1936-2009/

Former Tigers flash in the pan Mark "The Bird" Fydrich was found dead today too.

UNI baseball cutting their program is a damn shame.  They have produced some good players and it was always a good program.  I would say I hope that it gets reinstated, but odds are that will not happen.  Look at Iowa State.

You know I heard time and time again that Iowa is great at raising kids and then watching them move way to bigger cities and states where they can prosper.  Now Iowa is left with (1) D1 baseball option in the whole state.  Looks like more kids will be shipping out of Iowa to play baseball.  Maybe we should focus on keeping kids in the state and keeping good programs like the UNI baseball program still going.

I must take issue with this characterization.  In addition to being perhaps the most entertaining player I've ever seen, I believe Fidrych was a potential HoF player.  His suddenly 'dead arm' his second season was more nearly medical malpractice than 'flash in the pan' - not 'til 1985 (8 years later) was the diagnosis of torn rotator cuff finally made.  The Bird and Herb Score are the two ill-fated pitching careers that have always made me wonder 'what might have been'?

How about Mark Prior.

Yeah, he and Lyman Bostock would certainly be on my short-list for everyday players.  I was only talking pitchers.

Bernie Carbo....end of story.

Sidd Finch and his 168 mile per hour fastball.  I hope his career as a french horn player was worth it.

I was totally buying that story while reading it in SI way back in the day.  I showed it to my mom and it took her about 2 seconds to realize it was an April Fools joke.

Maybe that right there was an indicator of my future education at UD...while the rest of my family matriculated to what might be considered more prestigious schools of higher learning ;)

Over 1000 Students Protest Wartburg College:

http://www.wcfcourier.com/articles/2009/03/25/news/local/doc49ca3d98b8d3f636088054.txt+

But the article I found the most interesting was in the Chronicle of Higher Education that discussed in detail Wartburg's ENORMOUS debt which is about equal to their endowment.

Seems like they won't be able to buy student-athletes and championships for too many more years to come or their debt will outgrow their endowment and they will really be in trouble.
