I'm very good friends with a former Wartburg admissions director, and he could only think of one situation in his 9 years in the admissions department involving where the rules were so much as bent to allow an athlete into school.
hmmm....could this have a couple of years ago???? maybe giving a "special package" to an incoming student?  ??? ;D ;D

sk, i have a good idea who that could be.  and before someone jumps down my thraot, the kid i'm thinking of did not play football, that was a preemptive shhh for anyone thinking of bringing it up

Hey doolitledog ...

Thanks for your insights on UD football and what to expect.  Its hard to get much these days either from the UD site or from the Telegraph-Herald ... so your contributions are much appreciated.

For all IIACers out there ... I've been having trouble when I hit the "quote" button and then try to type a response.  Anyone else running into that?

GO SPARTANS!

John Madden, a fixture in NFL broadcast booths for 30 years, has decided to retire, he announced Thursday in a statement released by NBC Sports.

I guess he couldn't do a season w/ out Favre. :D

If anyone loves the show 24 on fox you have to check out this site: http://www.jackbauerfacts.com/  Some are transformed from the Chuck Norris quotes, but there are some pretty good ones.

KoHawk Remedy:

I don't think the guy you are referring to got a "special package" leadership grant.  I think he qualified for the "I prefer the smell of hot chocolate mix to the smell of oatmeal ass" scholarship

Fixed.

Key Returning Players - Reynolds QB, Kuennen DL, McAllister WR, Stoltenberg OL, Theobald DB, Wehr DB
Key Losses - 29 Seniors (35% of squad)
Story lines for the Spring and upcoming season - Lotsa holes to fill
Coaching changes - None
Any other juicy news you are able to share - New irrigation system, practice fields
Opinion (intelligent, dumbass or otherwise) - Beat St. Olaf

I would add to your key returning players list:

Josh Patterson- Honorable mention cornerback.

Kyle McGivney-3rd on the team in tackles and 3 interceptions as a Sophmore.

Cody Edwards- played in every game his first three years as a 350 pound 2 gapper.

Tyler Bass- Had a good Freshman year at running back, sat behind Sherden his soph. year before losing his junior year to a shoulder injury.

Jordan Grimm- A strong legged kicker + an offense that has a history of stopping before the goal line, makes him a key.

Opinion- They will be stout enough defensively to keep them in every game. A lack of explosive offensive weapons to go with Reynolds and quality depth in the O-line will prevent them from running away from anyone. Special teams will be an area of improvement because it can't get much worse. Another 500 record?

Athletics are a big part of every school.  Does Wartburg do some shady things in regards to leadership grants?  Sure they probably do.  But point in the gun in your direction Coe and Central fans.  You guys have had good season in the 2000's.  Are you offering leadership grants?
No, Central isn't offering leadership grants.  Why do you think Wartburg is now considered the team to beat?

I have to agree with the Wartburg guys.  I don't know exactly how it works, but all NCAA III schools have to report athlete vs. non-athletic financial aid packages.  From what I've been told previously, the NCAA can and would place a school on probation if it was lopsided.

And if the financial aid person giving more money to athletes is the same person filling out the NCAA report, what makes you think the numbers couldn't be changed to make the report okay?

I would add to your key returning players list:

Josh Patterson- Honorable mention cornerback.  Amazing endzone breakup at BV

Kyle McGivney-3rd on the team in tackles and 3 interceptions as a Sophmore.  Hurt as freshman, could redshirt

Cody Edwards- played in every game his first three years as a 350 pound 2 gapper. Reduce platoon time ... lose 50

Tyler Bass- Had a good Freshman year at running back, sat behind Sherden his soph. year before losing his junior year to a shoulder injury.  Sidelined by Doolittle's apple pickers

Jordan Grimm- A strong legged kicker + an offense that has a history of stopping before the goal line, makes him a key.  Doesn't he wanna play DB?

Opinion- They will be stout enough defensively to keep them in every game Positive change from Hefte era. A lack of explosive offensive weapons to go with Reynolds and quality depth in the O-line will prevent them from running away from anyone Biggest recruiting needs: OL, RB, WR ... . Special teams will be an area of improvement because it can't get much worse ... AND A KICKER/PUNTER. Another 500 record?Arrrgh ... say it aint so :'(

So based on your conspiracy theory; did Central lie, cheat and steal to win twenty-seven football titles or has it only been Wartburg doing dirty deeds to win eleven titles?

WARTBURG KNIGHTS

Key Returning Players:  QB Nick Yordi, RBs Alex Boom and Lamar Harvey, WR?KR Matt Gustafson, DB/KR Josh VanDenHul, LB Blake Suckow, OL Spenser Herkleman

Key Losses:  WRs Dan Bauder and Justin Vetter, TE Ryan Hoerner, LBs Ryan Gerardy, Kyle Goodchild and Eric Lauterbach, S Jason Lansing, DB/TE Marcus Hemesath, CB Josh Faaborg, P Stephan Kingery, K Spencer Herzberg

Story lines for the Spring and upcoming season:  Developing the receiving corps, Improving consistency in the running game, replacing specialists, gaining depth on offensive line (3 starters gone), Replacing key leaders on defensive side of the ball

Coaching changes:  I've heard rumors that defensive line coach Marcus West won't be back, but haven't heard anything for sure

Any other juicy news you are able to share:  Nope

Opinion (intelligent, dumbass or otherwise):  Knights are the clear-cut favorites to repeat as IIAC champs in 2009 (likely due to all the leadership grants), but do have some big holes to fill.  Vetter, Bauder, and Hoerner all came up huge during last year's playoff run, helping Yordi develop along the way.  Should be interesting to see how the O-Line shapes up, and if they can help clear the way for a better effort in the running game.  The only bad thing about returning 9 defensive starters in 2008 is that you have to replace all of them in 2009.  Hopefully some guys have stepped into leadership roles during the offseason conditioning and spring workouts so they can set an example for the rest of the team and the incoming freshmen when camp opens in mid-August.  Replacing Herzberg and Kingery is a tall task, but not one this coaching staff hasn't accomplished before.  Whoever the new P/K are, they'll probably need a double dose of patience in the fall, just like Herzberg and Kingery got as freshmen in 2005.
