FIrst one today with with Maker's. Second one was Beam. By that time I couldn't taste the difference. No, a former OL can't handle 2 when I realized my second one was almost a half a bottle of Beam. I'm going to bed.

Yeah, pint glasses or stadium cups can get you in trouble in a hurry when mint juleps are concerned.  I found out last week that I can't handle tequila very well.  I had to leave my party downstairs and go up to bed very very early because of that.  The good thing about drinking too much on a saturday???  Most people don't have to go to work the next morning ;)

By the way, the horse I picked finished 20th out of 20 horses.  My derby picks finish about as well as my favorite D3 team ::)

To put a good olineman to bed, it must have been a 1.75 of Beam in the second one to put you to bed.  Well maybe with the kids and the wife you have softened up to 2 shots on and the couch for a nap ;)

I've been busy handicapping and doing my mint julep prep work.  The start of Triple Crown season is my second favorite time of the year right behind the start of football season.

Glad to see I won't be the only one in Iowa drinking Mint Julips tomorrow ;D

My mother, being from Louisville, just called me to make sure I could make them the proper way.  I don't think she believed my assurances that I do know how to make them properly.  I am sure by 4pm tomorrow I really won't care which horse wins...but I will be feeling good!!!

Care to share the recipe?

Keep in mind that properly for me is by my mothers family recipe...as with most things in the South, everyone has their own recipe which is the proper way to make it.

You will need...

Mint leaves
Bourbon...Early Times according to my mom, but for me any bourbon is fine...and I did say bourbon.
Sugar
Water
Shaved ice is preferred...you can used crushed ice...please, no ice cubes!!!
Silver or pewter cups if you are so inclined...highball or cocktail glasses also work fine for us yankees.

Keep in mind I eyeball things when making drinks...measurements are laughed at in my family...

mix equal parts sugar and water...probably 2 cups of each...4 cups of each if you have friends, and crush up 2 or 3 mint leaves into this mixture and heat on the stove to make a syrup.  Make your syrup the night before for added flavor (I can't back that up...but my parents swear by it)... or, after your syrup cools, pour a bit into the bottom of a glass...hmm, dime sized high if that makes sense, depends on how minty sweet you like it.  Then fill...FILL your cup with shaved or crushed ice.  Add a mint leaf to the edge of the glass.  Add your bourbon...to the rim.  Put in a straw...should only just reach above the rim...this way you take in the aroma.

Usually a good idea to not drink more than 2 of these...unless you are a former O-lineman...then perhaps you can handle more.  The drinking of more than 2 of these can lead to you not remembering the Kentucky Derby.  It's also a good idea to eat all day long on Kentucky Derby day...think of it as one really long football tailgate.

DBQ1965...does today make it 17 weeks until kickoff???  or does today make it 18 weeks???  I'm confused...again.

I drank a bakers dozen today.  Does that qualify me the alchy fo the board?

I dunno. How do you make a bakers's dozen? All I can say is that I set sail with the Captain last night until the bar ran out.

I missed all the Derby Day debauchery, so Mrs. Warthog and I could go to Waterloo and spend the day with our future Knight granddaughter.  We left all the Tom Foolery in the hands of the little Warthogs and their spouses.  We took the future Knight to the Wartburg bookstore to get an orange/black soccer ball and a new t-shirt.  Then we headed up to the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  We then headed east to check out Upper Iowa.  They have made significant campus improvements over the last few years, but unfortunately Fayette is still lacking in those things most college age kids would want in a "college town".

As a result of our Saturday excursion, I'll be emotionally ready for Cinco de Mayo on Tuesday.  Limes, tequila and taco fixins' are on hand.  Tuesday is one of those days you are particularly happy to be in an ethnically diverse community.

Tal vez, necesitamos algunas botellas de  Negra Modelo y juevos rancheros para celebrar perfectamente.  Claro!

This is no kidd'n. After my first excursion into homemade julips yesterday, I was fell asleep on the couch to Rocky IV (me falling asleep to Rocky is unheard of) by 7:30 and only was woke up by my wife prying the remote from my fingers, then woke up around 10 long enough to head upstairs to bed.
I woke up at 5:30 this morning absolutely ready to start the day. And what a beautiful day it was.

Fannosaurus Rex

Mrs. Rex, through some sort of mystical formula that involves numerology, horse geneology and parapsychology, picked the 50-1 winner.  I had a show ticket on the third place runner so, what-a-ya-know, we actually made money on the event.  I didn't think it would happen until pigs fly and sure enough, all I have been hearing about is swine flew.

The problem now is, I can never figure out an appropriate drink for the Preakness in two weeks.  People I know who have been to Baltimore say Ripple is about right.  Pimlico is bankrupt so they may be right.

Look what I found.  There are several versions on google, so search away.

I think the horse genealogy was the key.  It certainly wasn't his prior races.  He's a gelding, so he will not be at stud. :'(

I've tried the Mint Juleps in Iowa (out and from my own bar) but nothing tastes as good as the ones I had in New Orleans a few years ago.... But, then again, everything tastes better on Bourbon Street. :)

New President for Wartburg College selected

Dr. Darrel D. Colson, provost and dean at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., will become the 17th president of Wartburg College.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

In reading about Dr. Colson it looks like he has a great commitment to education. I'm just wondering how he will be on sports since they are such a large part of Wartburg's identity. Centenary does not offer football, but with him being a LSU grad he should hopefully have an appreciation of the game.

Maybe from now on it will be:

From what I've seen of YouTube videos from the Preakness infield, it looks like beer bongs are the drink of choice.  Or necessity.

And from the "Confirming What Everyone Knew Already" file, the Wartburg football schedule has been released:
http://www.go-knights.net/news/Article.aspx?ID=3484
All afternoon games, with the exception of the home opener against Augsburg on 9/12.  That will make 4 of the 6 games in that series night games, and I'm just fine with that.  St. Norby and Coe are 1:30 kicks, with SNC being a roadie the first week of the season, and Coe being Homecoming.
