Wartburg coach in 50's and 60's passes away

Dr. Norman B. Johansen, 88, of Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, May 4, at Banner-Baywood Hospital in Mesa. He coached football, wrestling and golf and taught physical education at Wartburg from 1951 to 1968. During those years, the football team won Iowa Conference championships in 1958 and 1959, and the 1958 team achieved the first undefeated season in college history. The wrestling team won conference titles in 1954 and 1960, and Johansen coached 13 individual conference wresting champions. He was inducted into the Wartburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

He earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1951 and after leaving Wartburg, completed an Ed.D. degree at the University of Missouri, where he spent four years as an administrator in the physical education department. He was athletic director at Northern Arizona University for four years and then became involved in community college administration, first at Maricopa Community College and then as dean of continuing education at Mesa Community College, where he retired in 1990.

A memorial service is pending at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Mesa.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

I could give my whole paycheck and not change Central's rank in any year.

Y'know...if you're looking for a place where your whole paycheck will make a big difference, lemme give you my address.    ;D

Joe and Linda Chlapaty donate another $30 million to UD.  Money goes towards academic programs and improving existing campus facilities.

I can't say enough good things about that family.  It's not just the money they have given the school.  It's the leadership they have provided to the school during the dark times almost a decade ago.  Plus, just how humble the two of them are.  Last year my wife and I watched UD shuttling alumni from the Myers Center tailgate over to the new stadium in limosine golf carts.  Meanwhile, the Chlapaty's were walking by themselves very quietly over to the stadium.  I also saw the two of them standing outside in the rain in Mt. Vernon 2 years ago and talking to fans while waiting in line for a hot chocolate during halftime of that game.  Very down to earth people for the money they have, and also very sincere in wanting to see UD excel  in the future, academically and athletically.

Dear Sugar Daddy Chlapaty:

Please donate money, equipment, resources to the IIAC so that all schools will webcast all the 2009 football IIAC conference games.

I promise not to call your stadium Chipotle if you do this.

I believe UD finished up this past week.  But don't know that for sure.  And heard no updates of how things went.

From UD's website, here is the expanded article and video of the Chalapty Presentation from yesterday:

In summary, the $30 Million will go to add 3 Academic Chairs, a New Residence Hall, and a New Fine Arts/Worship/Campus Center ($20 Million Lead Gift). Their donation will not cover the entire cost of the iniatives but will be invested and of course also "lead" the way for other donors to follow. I believe the complete cost of the iniatives will be over $30 Million. But, this is a significant "chunk" of the total needed.

Britney Spears, Prez Colson, Cousins!!!

Hopefully nobody will read this fine print, but they MIGHT share a common ancestor 7 generations ago in Elzabeth Colson, born 1733, died 1768 ... that would make them 7th Cousins ... Oh sure, it's a stretch, but I gotta humor those knights somehow.  GO NORSE!!!   http://www.wargs.com/other/spears.html  It's amazing what google turns up.
