Or when they started investing some money in talented coaches.
12 straight men's titles brings us back to about 1997.
Coach WIllis hired then
Newsom became head track coach in '98
Peth hired then
Miller fresh off his first national title.
Holst was a couple years in and won the first of 12 consecutive conf titles
and I believe that was one of the first years Gary Grace was AD

You are correct, the buying student-athletes and debt started accruing earlier then the "all-sports" trophies in the IIAC. Thanks for pointing that out....

Willie U

And isn't it a little foolish to "think" that wartburg had the ONLY great coaches in the IIAC?? That was just one piece of their success, let's be more realistic and look at the big picture and money or lack there of had a lot more to do with it.

Of course UD has NEVER done anything like that. I bet all those football players left nice warm Florida to come to cold snowy Iowa just because they were bored there. Oh, that's right. they were all "music" scholars.

No all those players from Florida came to UD because they sucked and did not have anywhere else to play football at.  The coaches told them they would start and botta bing botta boom.  You have yourself a roster full of transplants whom I would not trust with a potato gun.

I'm sure they could have found a CC or something to play at a lot closer than Iowa. There had to be something going on to get players from middle to below average incomes to go 1500 miles to a school with yearly costs of $20k or more.

My point is that prople can try and paint Wartburg with that brush, but everyone is going to get splattered too. I don't think any IIAC school is innocent in this regard.

Hmmm, I seem to recall those "sucky" players beating your school in recent years? So, I guess your team REALLY sucked, huh?

FBdaddylonglegs- I just said what every other college in the IIAC thinks and knows. I would bet if they did research on the amounts of gift aid that students at wartburg get, you would see a much higher percentage of student-athletes getting those mega gifts then non-student athletes. I am not saying no one else does it but I have an inkling wartburg does it more........ Do you wonder why people don't bash central? Central has seen more success then wartburg EVER will. It's because they built their success with hard work and tradition... not cheating.

It's my opinion, take it or leave it.

Oh, and by the way, I'll bet you all a nickel you'll see many more iowa, illinios and wisconsin kids on the roster next year.

See you in august!

Willie U-
You missed the conversation a couple months ago. That study has already been done. I don't remember the exact findings but the amount of aid given to student-athletes as opposed to students only was within a couple percentage points of each other.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

I should not even pretend to work today and just stay on here and watch this back and forth tennis match.
:P

I am just hopefull that UD is able to hire good coaching staffs, bring in quality kids that stick around 4 years, win some games, get degrees, make a boatload of money in their adult life, give back to their alma mater, see UD develop into a great institution.

Dog, your hopefullness could have been said 10-15 years ago. UD, is, in fact already a great institution now. And in case you missed the most recent news, just received some more boatloads of money. In fact, UD has received more money then any other IIAC school in the past decade. I just really wish you would quite this inferiority complex you have with regards to your alma mater in relation to other schools in the IIAC. Maybe back when you attended UD you felt that way (I on the other hand never did) but, regardless, the institution is nothing like it was back when you attended. Other then still a close, family oriented feel to it. Academics are better, athletics are better, facilities are better, support (giving) is better, the atmosphere is better, and so on.

Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one but some hold more water than others. I respect yours no matter how jealiusy-tinged it is.

From the rumblings I've heard, they'll need all those players since apparently ther are a lot of losses from the team not attributed to graduation. So we'll see if there is an improvement in performance if the future. If there is, will it be coaching or the massive dollars just pumped into the athletic department?

You are uneducated with your statement....the only losses were kids that are being asked not to return.

I'm getting my years mixed up.  I was going by the UD mission and vision statement they put out.

Vision
The University of Dubuque by the year 2008 will be:

Acknowledged as one of the best small, private Christian colleges and universities

I was thinking UD had stated by 2010...anyway, I am proud of my school and don't have an inferiority complex about our school.  I think we stack up well against any other IIAC institution.  My hopefullness is that we continue the forward progress and continue into the future this high level of giving that we have seen over the last decade.  And hopefull we continue moving forward in sports, something we are already seeing.

Let me know what games you will be at this fall.  It would be fun to get together with you and others and have a beer and see a game.

I was only reporting what I've heard, but your reply is very disturbing. How can any coach ask players to leave without seeing them in more than a few limited non-contact practices? Isn't that done twords the end of camp in August when they can be fully evaluated?

wouldnt a kid leaving because he was asked to be a "loss from the team not attributed to graduation?" - same as a kid leaving under his own terms, just flipped

Thanks, Willie.  I am prejudiced, but I think the Central coaches do a great job of building the best possible team with the right attitude.  Their motto is "Excellence with integrity" and I think they do a good job of living it.  I also think arrogance plays into the WB bashing.  Coach Skipper was always one to emphasize that the team "act like you've been there before" when good things happen.  Let the knights have their orange swagger, I'm proud to bleed red.
