This comes after recent news that Upper Iowa is planning on 60 million dollars in improvements to their Fayette campus.  They have some good things going on there.  While I am happy to see that, it's still Fayette :P

Maybe UIU bought Oelwein's Register!!!

Like moving the campus to another town?

Oelwein Daily Register Pre-Season Small College Football All-Iowa Team

Interesting - or maybe comical...but it makes me wonder if many of the other non- Upper Iowa players that are listed have some connection to Oelwein / Fayette County...

I am pretty sure Jr. couldn't find Oelwein on the map.   :D

I thought it was kind of self-serving as well.  But in my own self-serving way I like that they mentioned my kid from Oceanside, CA.

Wartburg has done that 2 or 3 times ;)

I wonder if the UIU administration ever considered moving their campus before announcing this recent $60 million in improvements to their Fayette campus?

Yep, some people have the good sense to leave a hellhole of a city.  I'm looking at you, Clinton...

From the strange but true files...

Wartburg College has been located in...

Saginaw, Michigan 1852-1853
Dubuque, Iowa 1853-1857
St. Sebald, Iowa 1857-1868
Galena, Illinois 1868-1875
Mendota, Illinois 1875-1885
Clinton, Iowa 1894-1935
Waverly, Iowa 1879-1933 and 1935-Present

I'm a bit confused by the overlapping dates for some of those cities.

Coe College

In 1868, in an effort to secure the Lewis Parsons Estate, the Cedar Rapids Collegiate Institute changed its name to Parsons Seminary.  When the Parsons Estate chose to start a college in Fairfield Iowa, the school decided to change it's name to honor its original benefactor and was renamed Coe Collegiate Institute in 1875.

Are there any West Delaware kids headed to the IIAC?

I believe they tend to drift towards Wartburg recently.
Cole
Lahr
Boom
Brown
Havertape
to name a few.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Rugby match
October 3rd Clinton (Muddy River) plays Waverly (Bremer County Bucks) in Clinton.

I believe this is the only sports competition between the two towns in 2009.  Anyone aware of another one?

I'll let you know which town is better.

More strange but true from the Iowa Conference...

Central College

Central was a Baptist institution until 1916, when it was transferred to the control of the Reformed Church in America.

Originally named Central University of Iowa (CUI), the college officially changed its name to "Central College" in the mid 1990s.

Cornell College

Iowa's first female recipient of a baccalaureate degree, Mary Fellows, a member of the first graduating class from Cornell College in 1858. In 1871, Harriette J. Cooke became the first female college professor in the United States to become a full professor with a salary equal to that of her male colleagues.

Cornell's mascot is a Ram. In 1949 the Royal Purple, the school's yearbook, offered a $5 prize for someone who could come up with a new mascot to replace either the "Purples" or "Hilltoppers." A sophomore came up with the idea for the ram.[

Once on a MNF broadcast, I remember Alex Karras referring to Vern den Herder from Central University in Cedar Falls!  I guess Alex had too many hits.

There were a ton of West Delaware kids that attended Wartburg when I was there.  WDel was like the 3rd most represented high school behind Waverly-Shell Rock and Cedar Falls.  I think a bunch of their grads usually head to Luther as well.

Even more than New Hampton?
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

A few more strange but true Iowa Conference stories...

Loras College

has functioned under several names...St. Raphael Seminary, Mt. St. Bernard, St. Joseph College, Dubuque College and Columbia College, finally adopting its present name during its centennial in 1939.

Loras dropped football after the 1959 season.  Varsity football returned after 20 seasons in 1979.

University of Dubuque

In the 1940's with 3 conference titles in football, 4 titles in basketball, and 3 in track and field.  The Univerisity of Dubuque became known as the "College of Champions"  maybe only in the Dubuque area ;)  at least according to the history of the University of Dubuque book I have read.  We are still hopefull that becomes a reality again in the near future!!!

Though all IIAC schools are affiliated with a church demonination.  UD is the only IIAC school that has a seminary.

DBQ1965

I just finished watching "Field of Dreams" for the um-teenth time :D

It's always fun to see the relatively brief scenes on the UD campus ... but more than that, among the several themes the film conveys is the atmosphere of idyllic Iowa.

I still remember well the year I went to grad school at UNI and we rented a farm house 3 miles south of Dunkerton.  To the west of us was wonderfully rolling countryside with a field of corn on one side of the road and a field of soybeans on the other side (along with a little bit of wild Iowa marijuana).  Sunsets were magnificent!

Michigan may be where we live now with a son and daughter and grandson nearby ... but I hope you know how lucky you are to be living in Iowa 8)
