I'm headed to the lovely state of Iowa next weekend for a wedding on the 25th.  I'd love to come Friday night and get a round of golf in somewhere in the Des Moines area before the wedding Saturday morning.

Send me a private message if there is a course worth playing and you're up for it around Des Moines Saturday morning.  The wedding is at 3.

Thanks IIACers!

With the pre-season publications coming out with rankings and such would anyone be interested in putting together a Pre-Season All IIAC Team?

A theme park tour sounds like a lot of fun.  It has been a long time since I have been on a roller coaster and I understand there has been considerable technological advancement in the field.  I hope to get on a modern one before I become one of the guys who is the subject of the warning signs you see while you stand in line.  Does Pep have a distinct whoop he uses while coastering or do you just scream like a sissy like I do?

While it all depends on the coaster, Pep usually just screams like a sissy with an occasional "Woo woo and oh my gods" interspersed.

Pep's favorite coaster is "The Voyage," a wooden coaster in the new Thanksgiving section at Holiday World in Santa Claus, IN custom built in 2006 with design assistance from Will Koch, one of the park owners. Pep screamed like a sissy the entire way....

What's more, the park is America's first theme park (built as Santa Claus Land in 1946) and still owned and run by the Koch family. Food prices are reasonable in the park, plus they offer FREE SOFT DRINKS and, in their water park, FREE SUNBLOCK. Definitely worth the $39.95 admission price (discounted to $35.95).

Do you all feel a movie coming on about Parkersburg and all it has gone through?
What would be a good title?

Pep visited Parkersburg out of respect for Coach Ed Thomas. Pep had viewed his speech, and was impressed by him both as a person, a coach and as a man of God.

Pep arrived in town from the south, therefore, first seeing all of the new houses and work underway on the highschool. Pep photographed the field which was being mowed at the time, plus some of the new construction, and the memorial sign on the fence. Pep went to the Kwik-Star and found folks friendly and willing to talk about their town, Coach Thomas and all that was happening there.

Most everyone had sons or other relatives that had played for Coach T. Pep was told that Coach T.'s wife was back to work at City Hall across the street....and stopped in to express his sympathy and let her know that her husband's life had touched more people than she would ever know, that the ripples were felt even in Western New York.

Pep also picked up a copy of the weekly newspaper, the Eclipse News-Review (great little paper) and saw in it that Sports Illustrated had done a cover story on Coach Thomas. Later during the trip, Pep was able to read the SI story at a library in Mason, OH and found Lee Jenkins' story was right on the mark...even the gent mowing the field in Coach T.'s stead. Go A-P Falcons!

Never!!!  :D

+K to all the Iowa posters....'cause from Dubuque (lodged there Tuesday night) to Dyersville to Parkersburg to Altoona, Pep encountered some great Americans in the great state of Iowa!

You hit a lot of our hometowns along the way -- glad we could extend your our hospitality! Where is the next stop on your tour of amusement parks?

And, what will it take to get you back here during football season?  ;D

I'll be golfing in Galena on Saturday, But I would suggest trying the new and improved Otter Creek on the north side of Ankeny across the street from my place. Maybe I can talk Mrs Walston into letting me leave the door open and you can raid the fridge.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Are you playing at Eagle Ridge in Galena or at the public course?  If you're playing at Eagle Ridge, hopefully you're playing the General.  It is an awesome course!  The North Course is pretty nice, too.

Alfred has open dates on Oct. 3 and Oct. 17....any classic Iowa rivalries on those dates?

Pep is back home in Alfred, NY now recuperating, only wishing he'd had more time to visit D3 campuses along the way. Thought about visiting Wartburg, and when in Dubuque, didn't realize that DU was D3. Also considered Cornell since we've got one of those back here in NY. And a good friend who Pep looked for in Milton, WI (but was in Denver at the time) graduated from Simpson College before doing his grad work here in Alfred.

Who's the favorite to take the IIAC this year?

Talked to Dubuque mega-donor Joe Chlapaty tonight.  Sounds like his next project is to bring minor league baseball back to Dubuque.  The last real chance the city had at a MiLB team was back in 2003, when the Michael Gartner owned team from Michigan was looking for a new home.  Everything looked like smooth sailing until the voters of the Key City said they wouldn't pay for a new stadium.  "Joey Clap" makes it sound like a lot of things are already in place to bring a team to Dubuque, and the rest will fall into place when a team in the Midwest League goes up for sale.  Told us its not so much if, but when Dubuque gets minor league or independent league baseball at this point.

IIAC games on 10/3:
Cornell @ Central
Dubuque @ Coe
Loras @ Buena Vista
Simpson @ Luther

IIAC games on 10/17:
Coe @ Wartburg (Wartburg homecoming)
Cornell @ Buena Vista
Dubuque @ Simpson
Luther @ Central

Couple of bad weekends for rivalry games.  Loras-BV or Wartburg-Coe would probably be the closest to rivalry games there, plus Wartburg Homecoming is always a good time.  That said, the weekend of the 3rd could be an easier travel weekend if you are driving, since 2 of the 4 games that weekend are in the eastern half of Iowa, versus just one of four on the 17th.

Have you played it since it re-opened last month? I was going play there right after it opened, but there was a huge scramble going on ahead of me and a 5 hr round was not appealing. The designer of Otter  remodel, Paul Miller is the guy who did remodel (2001-02) + 2 new holes (open by 2011) @ Waverly Golf Course.

Do be surprised if you see me @ the #2 tee @ CO on Thursday.
