I was 15 months old for the lunar landing.  No memories at all.  A friend of mine from UD that was a year older says his first memory is of his mother sitting him down on the floor in front of the TV and telling him over and over "you WILL remember this...you WILL remember this"  He says he remembers more about that than the actual moon landing.

I was 10 and remember watching it with my parents and middle brother. I remember the sense of pride we all had. If we knew really how sketchy the whole moon program was, we would have never let anyone go. Today we have hundreds of times the computing power in a pocket calculator than Apollo 11 had in all its computer systems. The sheer guts and bravery all those in the lunar program showed is what got them through. I wish we could find more of that attitude today.

You beat me to it.  I've been listening to the anniversary coverage today, and it struck me that my cell phone has more computing capacity than the entire Apollo program had! :o

It was a truly amazing event.

Perhaps even more amazing (in a sad way) is that it has been 37 years since anyone was there.  Regaining some of the wonder of those years might do marvels for the national psyche.

But would not be so good for the national budget.

True.  But, since you said your parents were only barely old enough to remember the feeling, you have no idea what that event did for the nation's spirit.

[Alas, it was swamped by the morass of Vietnam - but it may well have prevented much worse calamities, coming soon after the '68 riots, and months before Kent State.]

I doubt that a NASA project could recapture it, but it would be wonderful if something could give the country that feeling again.  It would literally be worth a trillion bucks! ;)

5 Words or Less

I had just turned 5 years old and was vacationing at Lake Ottertail when Apollo 11 landed on the moon.  Uncle Lawrence's cabin had bedroom "cubicles" which allowed the air (and noise) to circulate from room to room along the ceiling.  On most evenings the adults would quiet down or go outside while the mothers bedded down us youngsters.  But on this night, for better or worse, we were all glued to the tube peering into the blizzard of snow on the oldest RCA west of the Mississippi asking each other ... Did you see that? or What did they say?  No matter what direction the rabbit ears were pointed, the picture didn't improve.  Exasperated, my uncle finally said, "That's it, the clouds aren't right to recive signal from the moon tonight.  Time for bed (meaning me, not him)."

I really have no recolection of anything from the telecast and certainly didn't grasp the significance of the event, but I do remember my grandmother telling me that this was a very historic moment and that I would always remember the events of that evening ... Oddly enough, I did.

I was nineteen, in California with a hangover of a proportion that was only slightly less historic than the moon landing.  Now that I have read all of the 40th anniversary reminiscences in the newspaper, I realize that most of my memories of the big event are faulty.

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I was 10 years old at the time and recall our newest toy, a 350 pound Motorola stereo, complete with am/fm radio and capable of playing 78's - 45's and 33 records, sat idle as we tried to get the best resolution our old black and white would allow. For some reason, I have better recollection of the Gemini 4 mission four years earlier when the 1st American walked in space.

Seems like 1969 was the year they had the draft lottery.  What a black day that was.  I forget what my number was but it was under 50 which guaranteed me getting drafted once I lost my student deferment.  The draft was a terrible thing but it sure made me a better student than I might have been without it.

Thunderbolt ... thanks for that.

Also in 1969, the IIAC football champion was Simpson!

Conference standings were:

Simpson      6  1  0
Central       5  2  0
Luther        5  2  0
W. Penn     4  3  0
UIU           3  4  0
Wartburg   3  4  0
BV            2  5  0
UD            0  7  0

Football...people, can we focus here?

In 1969 the New York Jets won the Super Bowl.

#1 Texas beat #2 Arkansas 15-14 in the "Game of the Century".  Where were YOU when James Street dashed for Texas' 1st TD?

BTW - 1969 marked the 100th anniversary of College Football (look up pictures from that game and you'll see the decal on the Texas helmets)

Anybody remember the Southwest Conference?

Watching the UT-Arkansas game on the television.

And, yes!  The initial commissioner of the ASC was Fred Jacoby.  Mr Jacoby was chair of the committee responsible for limiting football scholarships in his clean-up of the old SWC.  He later became the commissioner of that Southwest Conference.

An excellent description of NCAA recruiting in the 1960's can be found in Gary Shaw's Meat on the Hoof.

Once again, my memories of the 60's aren't great, but I'm pretty sure there were no black guys on the field in that game.

ALright- Getting ready to head to Pella tomorrow afternoon for 3 days in enemy territory? Anyone else on here going to be there? I know I've seen a few before.
Central coaches who lurk on here, you know who I am.
If not, I'm the loud one with the big straw hat from Dowling that is getting on Connell everytime he blows the play dead when a defensive player gets within a couple yards of my RB's. QB's don't know how to take a hit
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

With the pre-season publications coming out with rankings and such would anyone be interested in putting together a Pre-Season All IIAC Team?

Basis:  A combination of last year's All-IIAC returnees, a review of returning stats leaders, intuition, wild-ass guesses, and a bit of fatherly bias.   ;)
