I agree that it is too bad the sports overlap. Football is losing some of thier best athletes in skill positions.

This statement alone illustrates why you should now go back to your soccer board.  You have an obviously overvalued sense of self-worth in your assessment of the type of athleticism employed in soccer relative to football.

Soccer players are indeed fine athletes in their own right...but it is soccer missing out on the athletes, in this country at least, who othewise choose football, basketball and even baseball over soccer.  This a fact most every High School and College coach will lament to you.

I was going to write one more missive on that sports where only 2 competitors can use their hands to touch the ball but I am done with that.  And it's not because I don't like or don't know the game.  I live in San Diego.  Our local team is El Tri.  My company shuts down production to televise the World Cup Semi's and Finals...but I digress.

On this FOOTBALL board, we talk FOOTBALL...more specifically IIAC FOOTBALL.  As FOOTBALL season rapidly approaches we will talk more FOOTBALL.  We have fun talking about FOOTBALL...even Coe FOOTBALL.

:D

I agree with you on a couple of points. 1st soccer does lose good athletes to football. But it is difficult for a good athlete to go out for soccer in high school and be competitive in a good program. It is not as hard the other way around. I have already told you about 1 son. My oldest son played soccer through the 8th grade then played football in high school. He was a 2 year starter in the Mid-Suburban Conference in the Chicago area, then played NIAIA football at Trinty University.
The 2nd pointI agree is that this is a football site and I will quit talking about soccer.

If you want some variety from football; you love IIAC sports; and want to some great athletes perform, check out Loras , Wartburg or Central soccer games sometime. I think you would enjoy it.

Hats off to the Luther Rugby program, the best one in the IIAC.

Although Central is turning it around and the women at Wartburg are fierce

I got back yesterday from a weekend trip to NE Iowa. My friends and I spent some time in Dubuque this weekend, and I have to comment on UD -- wow, what a transformation! My friends and I were all amazed by the physical transformation the campus has taken on! Double D, I can see why the alumni are coming around. Some of my (Central, Simpson, UNI and Clarke) friends all commented that they would have looked at and taken UD more seriously 15 years ago with that campus.

In addition to the overall campus facelift, the field looks amazing. Man, I'm so ready for football...

Question for the board:

With UD's facelift underway, a surge in endowment, the addition of quality coaches and a pledge to strengthen academics ... What school(s) will feel the biggest sqeeze in "market share" (ie experience the greatest competition for attracting students)?

I would guess that possibly no one.  I'm thinking maybe UD might start to bring in some kids that might not have thought of going D3 in the past.  But, if there are some teams that might see a squeeze in market share I would go with Loras.  Being the close neighbor might see kids from a 50 mile radius of Dubuque start to head towards UD instead of automatically choosing Loras.  Also, with Dubuque really pushing the Presbyterian angle over the last 10 years...along with improvements in facilities, academics, and a similar urban environment...Coe might start to see kids picking UD over Coe.  Just guesses on my part though.

Lets just start seeing some more wins on the gridiron!!!

Very good question.  I know one of Coach Z's stated goals is to not let recruits from the tri-state area leave the area without taking a look at UD.  If they start pulling more kids in from the Dubuque area, I think that will effect Loras and Clarke first and foremost.  That said, neither of those schools deal exclusively with local students, so I'm not sure how big an impact will be felt.  My prediction is that more and more students around here will see the value of a D3 education and will choose UD over going the state school or community college-to-state school route.  Additionally, other D3s that have traditionally done well with recruiting efforts in Dubuque (Wartburg, Luther, St. Ambrose, UW-P, etc) might take a bit of a hit as well.

That being said, you can't run a 1,500 student college on Dubuque kids alone.  If we're talking specifically about football, Z's recruiting contacts in Wisconsin and Minnesota should help bring in more players from those areas.  I honestly don't know how UD's admissions dept. stacks up to others in the IIAC, but that would be a good place for their next big investment.  Having a beautiful campus, brand new facilities, and everything else that Dubuque has isn't worth very much if you don't have an admissions staff that can sell it to prospective students.
