How do you win? By getting average players to play good and good players to play great. That's how you win.

Adkins has both Volleyball and Soccer previews up. Hopefully football soon to follow,

I guess we now know where the priorities lie at Wartburg, sports wise :P

Speaking as a former SID, those previews are a lot easier to write. :)

Dubuque Telegraph-Herald with a story about train service between Chicago and Dubuque...as well as Chicago and Iowa City.

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=251678

Maybe UD...and Loras could use that as a way to lure potential recruits to Dubuque.  Along with all those IT jobs IBM is bringing to town as well as how nice campus looks and improved academics...yada yada yada.

Back in the olden days when I attended UD, there was a train (can't remember if it was the Chicago-Northwestern line or the Great Northern Line) from East Dubuque to Chicago ... very reasonably priced as I recall ... and it took about 3 hours.   As a side note, there also was a train from Dubuque to Sioux City (Illinois Central line I believe) ... and you rode the last 30 minutes or so backwards into Sioux City ... that seemed appropriate at the time.

What? I've gained fifty since college and I'll bet Walston has gained a few too.  Twenty pounds is nothing.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

coocoo & DBQ1965:

Walston can tell you the amount if he wants, but the truth is he is a shadow of his former self.  He has gone from a down in the trenches football o-lineman to something more like a soccer mid-fielder.  It was an amazing transformation.

As for SID Adkins' preseason review of Knight Football, I can wait for it.  I'm sure he wants to be sure who shows up for the start of practice and who stays after the first week or so.  There are generally some surprises on both counts.

Update for all that are interested:  Breitbach's in Balltown re-reopened yesterday afternoon.  As one of the perks of my gig, I got to go on a little tour of the new place Friday morning, and it looks amazing.  My impression was that it looks a lot more like the original restaurant than the 2nd version did, and Mike told me he's been hearing the same thing from a lot of the people that had been there to that point.  The place is going to be an absolute madhouse for the next couple months, especially on the weekends, but I'm hoping to get up there for dinner again sometime during football season.  I'm already kicking around the idea of going to the Luther game and stopping in Gunder on the way up.  Breitbach's would be a reasonable dinner stop on the way home.

Also, had a pretty good time at the Dubuque area Outfly gathering last Thursday.  Got a chance to meet Wartburg's new president, who seems like a very intelligent and genuine man.  As much as I liked Jack Ohle, until you got to know him, he had a tendency to put out a politicial/used car salesman vibe.  Not so much with President Colson.  Also got a chance to talk with Wartburg assistant coach Chris Winter, who says that the coaches are pretty excited about a couple of incoming freshmen from the Chicago area that should help out in the skill positions, as well as an o-lineman transferring in from the U. of Iowa.

Wow! a Gunderburger AND Breitbachs on the same day, thats a gastronomic holy grail, and has to lead to more of that 50 pounds we're all putting on since college.  I'm jealous.

Does seem kind of foolish to be apologetic for 6-4, but thats the kind of spoiled we Dutch backers are, no losing seasons since the Edsel will do that to ya.   But I'd also reference the ups and downs of last season for the Dutch, a 2 pt last minute loss to National quarterfinalists in week two, then a blow out to the hands of Luther and an overtime nail biter with Cornell kind of demonstrates the Jeckyll and Hyde season they had.

As one of the perks of my gig,

Forgot to mention another such perk...the fact that I'll be going to the Iowa-Penn State game in Happy Valley in September.  And will be getting paid for it.

I expect to see you while watching the game on the tube.  You'll be the cameraman getting plowed over on the sideline as Iowa extends its lead with a fade route to the side of the endzone.  Later, you'll be interviewed by Erin Andrews asking you about the hazards cameramen face on the sidelines.  Because of your concussion you will be confused and just mention you liked the video of Erin in her hotel room.  You then get punched in the gut by her for your troubles ;D

To weigh in on the Central season preview.  I understand Ypsi in that it is perfecty acceptable to acknowledge that injuries hampered a season.  And injuries certainly hurt Central last year.  To me, it just seems out of character for Central to put out a release saying as much.  I have always thought of Central as projecting an image of "our 100th man is better than anyone you have".  I would have thought that even if the Central staff and the SID know how much injuries hurt their performance, they would have put out a preview that stated to the effect of "last season was a dissapointment for Central.  We dedicated the spring to improving, and are excited for fall camp to start to continue our progress.  We look forward to the start of the season to prove to our faithfull fans that this season the Dutch will be once again challenging for a conference championship."
