Update for all that are interested:  Breitbach's in Balltown re-reopened yesterday afternoon.  As one of the perks of my gig, I got to go on a little tour of the new place Friday morning, and it looks amazing.  My impression was that it looks a lot more like the original restaurant than the 2nd version did, and Mike told me he's been hearing the same thing from a lot of the people that had been there to that point.  The place is going to be an absolute madhouse for the next couple months, especially on the weekends, but I'm hoping to get up there for dinner again sometime during football season.  I'm already kicking around the idea of going to the Luther game and stopping in Gunder on the way up.  Breitbach's would be a reasonable dinner stop on the way home.

I went through Balltown a week too early! I'm so glad to see that they are almost ready to open the doors again. Nothing compares to a meal at Breitbach's. :)

As one of the perks of my gig,

Forgot to mention another such perk...the fact that I'll be going to the Iowa-Penn State game in Happy Valley in September.  And will be getting paid for it.

I expect to see you while watching the game on the tube.  You'll be the cameraman getting plowed over on the sideline as Iowa extends its lead with a fade route to the side of the endzone.  Later, you'll be interviewed by Erin Andrews asking you about the hazards cameramen face on the sidelines.  Because of your concussion you will be confused and just mention you liked the video of Erin in her hotel room.  You then get punched in the gut by her for your troubles ;D

I think you've devoted WAY too much thought to what might happen to me in State College.  ;)

What? I've gained fifty since college and I'll bet Walston has gained a few too.  Twenty pounds is nothing.

You come to Wartburg to play for championships

2/5 days into camp are done and I absolutely can not wait for kickoff. 2 weeks ago we had pads on and were beating up on other teams. Now for 21 practices, we have no pads and beat up on eachother before we strap them on again and beat up each other.

I'd like to invite everyone down to Paddy O'Rourke's Saturday, August 8.  The Cedar Rapids Headhunters and The Cedar Rapids Rollergirls are throwing a party.  We have two bands playing, Meerkats 2-5 and Night Moves 6-10.  Both teams will be raffling off some stuff and will have merchandise for sale.  Don't miss the slaps competition inbetween bands.  Paddy O'Rourkes is at 608 16th st. N.E. in Cedar Rapids.

He'll have to fend off D. Rhodes for the workload.  C'mon Freddie, even a Cornell fan is pulling for you.   :)

Coe receives $420,000 NSF grant to fund student research in physics
Coe has received a $420,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be used for student/faculty research on the science of glass over the next four years. With one of the leading undergraduate science programs in the country, the college has now received the prestigious multi-year NSF research grants continuously since 1986. Since 2005, Coe has garnered over $1 million in funding from NSF to support scientific research and equipment.
The proposal that received the award was entitled "RUI: Undergraduate Research in Glass Science at Coe College; A National Model of Excellence." The award is effective from August 2009 through July 2013. According to physics professors Steve Feller and Mario Affatigato '89, the grant will be used to fund continued glass research at Coe. The Coe physics department is known worldwide for its groundbreaking glass research.
Specifically, the grant will support Coe student/faculty research in glass both on campus and in laboratories around the world. Coe students will travel to Canada, England, Italy and Brazil in the next few years to conduct research and present their findings at international conferences as a result of the funding provided by the grant.
The funding is the latest in a series of external grants received by Coe's science programs over the past two decades, with more than $2 million going to the physics program alone. Approximately one in six grant applications receives funding, demonstrating the highly competitive nature of the NSF grant process.
Coe is currently one of four small colleges in the U.S. to host a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site, also supported by the NSF. The REU program provides opportunities for students from Coe and other colleges across the country to conduct research in chemistry and physics.

I was never a physics/chemistry genius, but was always impressed by Coe's national prestige on glass research!

No surprise in the top 2 rankings. Wartburg begins the season ranked #17, St. John's falls all the way down to #13.... it promises to be an interesting year in D3 football all around...

And have some perspective...some teams would love to call 6-4 a "down" year.

Yeah, but we aren't one of them.   :P

Glad to hear that the rumor of Bandow maybe transferring to BV does not appear to have happened.  I'm not sure that he is the player I would tab for starting QB, but I don't want him going to the competition either.  I thought Lackey did a lot of improving last year, but was a bit too one dimensional with running.  Bandow was the same with passing.  It will be interesting to see if either has stepped up their full game or if Snead bumps them both out of the starting line.  I would have sworn that would happened last year had he stayed healthy.

I think injuries at key positions combined with the incredible talent that graduated the year before is what doomed Central last year.  And yes, we Dutch call 6-4 a doomed and down year.  Let's see if that kind of year at Central had the returning players stepping it up in the off-season to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The freshmen class size is up significantly at Central for next year.  But I bet it wasn't an easy task to get them.

I also found it interesting that Central is expecting 50 recruits this year. That nimber is 10-15 more that what coach Mac was saying was their ideal number when recruiting three years ago.I realize one can't stop anyone from going out, but Coach Mac was very clear about not just having recruits to just have them.
Heard that rhetoric from you before, if I remember right.  The answer is still the same.  No coach is going to turn down a student that wants the privilege of going out for football given the thousands of dollars they are willing to pay a school to attend.  That doesn't mean he was actively recruiting every kid that goes out.
