I"m happy for that Wartburg father that only has to pay 8k for four yrs of college. Cause my son played for the Knights and I can tell you he has to pay back alot more then 8k. So I guess they don't hand out the grants to everyone !

As it turned out, he only played at Wartburg 1 year.  He then went to Hawkeye CC and got his AA and went into the work force.  Construction I think.  Probably cost him more than 2k that year he was at Hawkeye ::)

In SW Michigan (and recognizing that Calvin doesn't play football) they modify that to: "An atheist is a guy who watches a Hope-Calvin basketball game and doesn't care who wins!" :D

When you type financial aid, do you consider student loans in the  financial aid bucket?  Or are you just referring to grants and scholarships?

Financial aid, in my book, is/are $$ that do not need to be paid back.

A loan is money that gives the borrower the benefit of deferred payment with the school getting its money from the lender.  It is transparent to the school as far as the received revenue.

Not to be technical....but Financial Aid is considered Scholarships, Grants, Work Study AND LOANS.

At UD, some students do not receive ANY grants or scholarships (money not needing to be paid back), but could still get work study and loans to cover the entire cost of attendance and that is certainly financial AID. Without it, those students would certainly not be able to attend UD. These students for whom I talk about are Computer Graphics/Interactive Media majors. Every other major could potentially get scholarships and/or grants.

No surprise in the top 2 rankings. Wartburg begins the season ranked #17, St. John's falls all the way down to #13.... it promises to be an interesting year in D3 football all around...

Anyone else find it interesting/odd that the two teams Wartburg beat in the postseason last year (Stevens Point, Monmouth) are both ranked higher (7, 12) than the Knights in the preseason poll?  I have never put a lot of stock into preseason polls, but to me that says that the voters think Wartburg lost a lot more from last year's team than the Pointers and the Scots, or that Wartburg winning those two games was a fluke in the first place.

Looks like the West Region will be the toughest draw again this year.  8 of the preseason Top 25 are bonafide Westerners, with about four more that could be moved west for playoff pairing purposes (try saying that 5 times fast).  If you extend the rankings out, Central would be #34, and BV would be in a three-way tie for 47th.

No argument on the technical definition...I am a tuition paying parent so assure you I am well versed.

My point is that money granted by the school does not fill school revenue as does a loan...I'm not a bean counter...but a school grant is like a discount to tuition...a Federal Grant would go to the school in lieu of money from the student, so I figure that would be revenue to the school.  But I digress...

The original point is that 50 students coming to play football whether they were encouraged or not, brings a lot of tuition $$ to Central.  In an economic climate like this, it's gotta make the admissions and finance departments very happy.

I'm thinking the former...

BTW - Wartburg's 2 playoff wins on the road were impressive.  Taking on UW-W @ UW-W and hanging in there was equally impressive.

But that team isn't the same as what comes back...so the Kaniggets will need retool and earn their way back up the charts.

I see Central moving its way up too.

The real issue is that one will move at the other's expense when they meet.

Wartburg needs to finally beat Auggie too    ;)

Or ... when both sides are praying for victory ... God just sits back and watches one hell of a game!

52 degrees in La Porte City this morning.  I mowed over some fallen leaves yesterday evening.  In the clearest sign of karm yet...my daughter asked me when we could go to a football game.  I'm ready for some football!!!

My only reason of asking is this.....paying $2k w/ no loans vs. paying $2k w/ $10k in loans per yr is a big difference to me.  I would consider student loans part of the students annual cost to attend school.  I'm not very smart, but my wife is and she got a lot of grants/scholarships at Central AND paid A LOT more than $2k per yr.  I was just trying to get clarificiation/understand how the $2k doolittle reference was calculated.  Thanks.

I didn't press the man on how the 2k figure came into play.  It came up because he said his son started out at UNI, had a 50% scholarship, but after leaving for Wartburg found out he could play D3 football for about half what he paid at UNI and said it was 2k at Wartburg.  Other than that we didn't get into the specifics of it all.

Other than the Nov. 7 showdown at Wartburg with Wartburg vs. Central, what are some of the other big game dates in the conference this year?
