I'd like to add another category of what HS teams everyone pulls for. I know we've done this before but I'm a curious guy.

Waterloo Columbus.. or Columbus Catholic as they are calling it nowadays.

I do not know if anyone has had a chance to read the BV season preview but it was pretty good.  5WOL already did his, which was also very good, but I am hopeful about this years squad.

I was surprised to see the void at running back, though having Bertelsen back for another year is probably a net gain. I think BV joins Loras, Simpson, Coe and Luther as teams that will play good defense every week and hope they can find enough offense to compete every week.

BUT, I never was a big fan of Grundy Center while I was in high school.  Now their coach reportedly told his players that if any of them went out for soccer in the spring he would not let them be starters for his football team in the fall.  That doesn't play well with me.

Grundy doesn't have a soccer team.

If they have a team, the IAHSAA doesn't know about it...

I graduated from North in 1984, right before the Ron Wymer era.  :-\

High Schools I cheer for are North Fayette and Benton Community.

Another sign I'm getting old:  parents of current Knights were still in high school when I was born.

Speaking of high schools, I still root for my alma mater, Cascade, and against our biggest rival, Beckman.  West Dubuque was another rival of ours when I was in school, but that rivalry's gone dark for about the last 6-7 years, so I have no problem rooting for the Bobcats these days.  I used to cover Mason City Newman, Clear Lake, and Cedar Falls, so I'll pull for them as well.  And maybe Pella every now and then.  But not PC.

In 2008 and previous years Grundy Center had their own team.  For 2009 they were shown as Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center as this score... Gladbrook-Reinbeck 5, Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center 2 (G-R is now 3-2-0)

Did they in '08? I thought this was the second year they sent kids north.
Another brother of mine coached soccer at AP and I think the number of kids he told me they were going to send up was 3. This was before Krusey was hired as coach at GC.
So even if he did say it, It doesn't look like it had too much influence on the program.

Grundy had their own team in '08.  A previous employer of mine was located in GC and my boss then was active in the youth soccer movement there.  Around '05 they had tons of kids at every age level going all over the state for youth tourneys.  Word was the football coach was not happy about this and then made the statement to his football team about not starting them for football and then pressured the school to drop soccer for budget reasons.  Who knows how accurate that all is though.  Though I did hear it from more than just my old boss.

Sorry to hijack the thread with soccer though...my fault.  Back to football...will UD ever put up a new roster and give us a preseason update on their website???

D3   The Burg - obvious
D2   NWMSU - Good friend of mine has a son on the FB team.
FCS UNI
BCS Iowa
PRO Da Bears
HS   WSR Gohawks plus I keep an eye on my alma mater (Ewloo) to see how bad they get beat. People can't believe they used to be one of the best programs in the state/country. I know it was years ago, but those games/teams were unbelievable!!! I am sure I am not alone (showing my age also), but I was in attendance @ every single game during their win streak in the mid 60's to early 70's.

Congratulations to Elliot Rausa!

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Junior kicker Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List Monday.  The award is given to the best kicker in NCAA Division II and III combined.

The Watch List for the Fred Mitchell Award includes 18 Division II and III collegiate place-kickers that were nominated by their colleges for excellence on the football field and in the community. The Award's Selection Committee Chairman Chris Kearney said, "These place-kickers are a very impressive group on and off the football field. They admirably represent their schools, their football teams, their communities, their families and themselves."

Fred Mitchell said, "The diversity of these fine young men is terrific and it is a pleasure to include them on the Watch List for this Award. Division II and III place-kickers seldom receive national recognition, and we are delighted to recognize them based on outstanding performance in the community and expectations going into the 2009 college football season."

Rausa has tallied 107 points so far in his career, ranking fourth best in school history.  His 10 field goals in both his freshman and sophomore year sit tied atop the school record books, while his 20 career field goals ranks third all-time.

Along with the his duties on the football team, Rausa is a member of the men's tennis and soccer teams at Coe.  He has volunteered at Waterloo's Catholic Worker House, helping with the poor and underprivilged.  He has also worked various tennis and kicking camps in Eastern Iowa.
