One of my spies on the Loras campus tells me that the offensive line might be a weak spot for the Duhawks this year.  If that's the case, don't count on them scoring too many points this year.

What Iowa lacks we make up for with our lack of low property taxes ;D

Proprerty taxes are much lower in California.  I had a $530,000 house in California and pay a little more in property taxes in Iowa for a $285,000 house.
Low taxes on some of the greatest property in the country.  Gee, maybe that is why California is broke.    8)

I know this is an IIAC board but I'm surprised there's zero chatter about the loss of Jewel Hampton. The RB position should be interesting for the Hawkeyes.

This may be an Iowa Board but we kind of stick to D3 here.  There are things that do get talked about but not a lot of D1 talk on the most part.  I used to be a huge Hawk fan till #4 became a Dutchman and then with all the jailbirds the hawks have produced I really have lost a lot of interest in them.  Still find out how they are doing and watch if on TV when not at a D3 game but I for one don't really follow them like I used to.

DF2K04 - What is the game-of-the-week and the rivlary game?

(For those of you who are new, the pick 'ems are listed on a separate board.  You must be registered and logged in to view the pick 'ems boards which are at - Post Patterns - General Football/Children's Boards/Pick 'ems - IIAC Pick 'Ems Board.  Thanks in advance to DF2K04 for tallying the results for yet another year.)

Sorry I dont have preseason rivalry games but I will choose a game of the week.  I forgot about it.  Looking at the list of games and in Honor of PH coming to Iowa I will choose Cornell/Grinnell as game of the week.  I think the honor of defending the IIAC and game of the week might help the Rams.

Dubuque Telegraph-Herald has a Loras preview up.

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=255182

Sounds like they'll have a stout defense, and they'll need to if they want to be competitive this year.

Was looking over the Central roster and noticed that former kicker Jason Goulden is now a student coach for the Dutch.  Did he get hurt?  Or just see the writing on the wall that Viggers was going to be the man?  I covered Goulden when he was in high school and thought Goulden was a pretty good athlete.

SK  they had a release out a while back that said he was moving to coaching for medical reasons.

Goulden had to withdraw from school for medical reasons this week.   :(  I sure hope things can turn around for him and he can come back as planned in the spring.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

And the VB player that went home with possible H1N1 did not have it.   :)

Are they serious with the Lorass TH article?? Talking about beating Wartburg and Central first of all AND all the conference championship talk  ??? Especially without McGrew  ???

My favorite quote was this:

Loras players, well aware the school has never won an Iowa Conference championship, won't be satisfied with just another winning season.

"Every curl we did in the offseason was about winning an Iowa Conference championship," Mike Schaefer said.

Hey Mikey, guess what? Curls won't help you win conference championships  :o Maybe things have changed with the off season work out regimen since one of Loras's all time great football players and former strength and conditioning coach Jim Romagna left Loras to teach at UD.

long time no post. . .

still protesting vince's release, but that is another story for another day

check out #13 for the cincinnati bearcats vs rutgers on monday, sept. 7, at 4:00 pm on ESPN. . .spurrier jr will be on a tackle on punt, an outside rusher on punt return, and on the front line on kickoff return. . .he should get a few snap at strong safety playing behind our only returning starter from last year's orange bowl defense.  I'm going to be at the game so look for the handsome, late fortyish,  crazy man painted black and red in the bearcat section
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

Let me guess, you are waiting and hoping that UD doesn't do well this year so you can say "I told you so" or "justify" your opinions about the situation.

So, will you jump back on the UD bandwagon if 3 years from now Coach Z wins the  IIAC?

Maybe we are different types of people. I am a proud supportive UD alum and always have been. I did not make the decision to change football staffs and frankly, it was nothing you or I could control. I respect your loyalty but also realize that time heals wounds and I am sure those guys have moved on and don't hold grudges. In fact, many times, change makes people stronger and better so someday, all of them may even be happier.

I would prefer if you would put your personal feelings aside about a past situation and regain your crown as "King of the Spartan Nation".

I know for me, regardless of the seasons outcome, I will be supportive of UD football throughout!

willy U,

here's why i feel that way. . .

i had my reservations about vince when he was first hired, but he brought the program back from oblivion with florida kids.  What was once the worst program at any level in america was now playing competitive football in the iiac.  What was vince's reward after one rebuilding year. . .the boot.  Talk about loyalty!  Now the university has built a fine new facility that they wish to fill with the parents of midwestern kids. . .that's fine. . .that's what they get the big bucks to decide, but i've posted it before on this board . . .i don't think ia, ill, and wisc kids will chose ud over the other small colleges in the area. . .just my two cents. . .not interested in debate. . .i now have "bigger fish to fry"  Scarlet Knights

Not trying to start a debate either. I respect your feelings and opinion but as you can see by looking at the roster, Coach Z recruited a large incoming class. Sure, with a lot fewer from FL and replaced them with more from WI, IL, IA and other places. Ultimately, like you said, will increase local fan following and support for the program. Which we all want to see. I see no problem with having athletes come from anywhere in the country or world--that is a plus in my book. But having a roster of primarilly athletes from a state like FL is not the answer either...unless your college is located in GA or FL. Diversity is good---IA, IL, WI, FL, TX, CA, etc.. etc....

Like I said, it does no good to dwell on things that can't be controlled. Time to move on and give Coach Z and the powers to be there chance. Also, I greatly beg to differ though on local kids choosing UD. UD has one of the nicest private college campuses IN the midwest and every facet of UD has improved over the past decade. Not sure why you would feel that way. Personally, I don't know why a kid WOULDN'T choose UD over any other midwestern private college  ;)

The week of opening kickoff and the board is full of UD talk...I love it!!! (3 exclamation marks for Klop and Dutchie)

Hey spurrier, UD hasn't given up on Florida.  4 freshmen on this years team are from Florida.

Of the 52 freshmen on that list it breaks down...

19 from Illinois
14 from Wisconsin
5  from Iowa
4  from Florida
2  each from Michigan and Texas
1  each from MN, ID, GA, HI, OH, England

If UD could end up with a roster of about 25 each from Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.  Then have from 5-10 kids each from Florida, Texas, and California.  And then another 10-15 kids from other parts of the country I think that would be a great mix.

As WillieU said, I think many midwestern kids will start choosing UD over other schools in the area.  Our campus takes a back seat to nobody at this point.  Beautiful campus in a nice sized city.  UD has a lot to offer.

The Dubuque Telegraph-Herald has their UD preview in today.

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=255338

Nice article, mentions the Spartans are young...7 of 8 top linebackers are freshmen, but that there is optimism on campus for the football team.  Zweifel also says they are emphasizing character, academics and being a good football team. "It's really important to me to teach our young men to be better people."

So the TH has had previews of UD and Loras the last two days.  We will probably see a story about UW-Platteville as well soon.
