I hadn't had my fill of football yet this weekend so after church I drove up to Cedar Rapids to watch the Coe/Loras JV game.  Actually it wasn't much of a contest.  Coe won the game 46-12.  Loras was at a little disadvantage because they had their quarterback in a "Don't hit me" red jersey.  It obviously allowed Coe to know Loras wouldn't be running any quarterback sneaks or options.  It is kind of boring to watch a touch football game as it pertains to the quarterback.

That being said, Coe still has a good group of JV players.  Combining them with a pretty good varsity group should make the KoHawk faithful smile when they think about the next season or two.

Is Loras short of q-backs?  It seems you would want your JV team to play a game with all weapons available so you can measure what they can do in live game situations.  My compliments to the Coe defense.  I may have been inclined to lower the boom a time or two just for the fun of it.

I know Loras used three quarterbacks on saturday, maybe that is why they were protecting him.

That being said Central is a very young team.  There were only 4 starting seniors on the offensive side of the ball today.  As these young players get more PT they will improve.  As Coach MC always says they need to improve each week.

We're you talking about Coe and Central here?  Coe only had three starters on offense that are seniors.  One of them was making his first start of the year after suffering a broken hand in camp.

No I didn't realize that Coe was that young.  I knew the QB was a youngen but didn't really look at the rest of their roster.  If that is true, and I have not reason to think that it isn't Coe if they can improve they will be a team to be reckoned with in the future.

Missed all three games this week end. High school game went into over time Friday. We won by one. Driving me crazy that I missed the game(s) and when some one tells me about the details.

Does anyone know if the Dutch game can be watch at a later time?

AZDutchman your son will be able to purchase DVDs of the games at the end of the year.  I think they were like 5 bucks per dvd and they had two games on them.  They are pretty nice to have.  When TV is really poor I still pop them in now and again to watch them.  I don't know any web site that they have.  I know cable in Pella replayed them and your son could dvr or vhs tape them if you wanted.  I think it was thursday night that they got replayed in pella.

College football transfers....How do coaches feel about them?

"The new rule (proposal 2005-54) states: A student-athlete who earns an undergraduate degree in four years but still has one year of eligibility remaining can transfer into another college's graduate school and finish his or her playing career there immediately without having to sit out a year."

I have a son graduating this year and he will have one more year of eligibility. His existing coach, (How would I describe?), is like talking to an opposite of Coach McMartin.

What keeps on entering my mind is a situation of a player/friend who was playing for the UofA. His dream was to play for Texas A&M (Texas native). He asked for permission to talk to Texas A&M. The very next day he was not allowed to work out in the weight room. He was told that the weight room was for team players.

What are your thoughts/experience with transfers?

[I have a busy work day and will not be able to check back till later. I would appreciate any input on this subject. I'm trying to put two days of work into one. I have to open the weekend for the football games! ;D]

From what I know Central's staff has welcomed transfers with open arms.  I know three that made all conference.  There are some kids that try to walk on at Iowa and Iowa State find out that they won't or can't make the 2 deeps and transfer to play football.  I am sure that Central's door is always open for players.  Also I know that Simpson's QB is a transfer from Iowa State so I am sure that Simpson would take them.  I also think that Wartburg has a couple of Iowa transfers on the team.  The evil empire takes all kinds of transfers and even gets them roofing jobs.  (come on guys that was a joke) ;D ;D ;D ;D  We haven't ground that axe much in awhile.    ;D ;D ;D ;D

I would have to believe that any team would welcome a transfer with open arms. I'm speaking about on the other side of the spectrum.

Hypothetically....
What would Central do if their starting junior quarterback asked permission to talk to Wartburg? Of coarse they would wonder why, but what if that player had his mind set on transfering out. How would the Central coaching staff react to that? Would they continue to play him?

A great way to handle it would be to take care of the transfer on the off season. That wouldn't be possible. My question to everyone is...

Do you know of any one that has been in this situation. (Both sides. Player or the college their leaving) or
What are your open thoughts on the situation?

Well you missed that topic about two years ago.  A three year starter at Coe transferred to Wartburg.  I don't know the details and I am sure the whole story is known by a few but it was not well received by Coe.  (thus all the roofing comments)

Some notes on the Wartburg-Loras game:

Wartburg is improving each week, but there are still many things to work on.
The defense gives up too many yards between the 20s.
Too many dropped passes on offense.

Loras has enough talent that they shouldn't have to resort to high school stuff like simulating snap counts while on defense.
The screaming hawk effect is annoying.
The Rock Bowl is a decent place to watch a game, especially when you send most of the homecoming crowd home long before the game is over.

Hopefully the Knights will use the bye week to tighten up things some more and be ready for BV on the 10th.

I am confident the Knights will continue to improve & Yordi & the receivers will become more consistent (although hard to be too upset with a 300+yd day & over 70%). Nice to see (hear) a KO ret for a TD. Good run Josh & hats off to the blocking on the return.....From the announcers pt of view, sounds like the snap count deal lead to a few of the Warts false starts & didn't make Willis very happy! However, I am sure the Knights coaching staff will address 150+ yards on 13 penalties!!!!

Coe's team bus getting stuck outside the stadium was a perfect metaphor for their performance on the field today.
Saw that bus problem on my way out of the stadium Saturday.  How long did it take for the bus to get back on the beaten path?

I think Coe has a good team and I was really impressed with the Dutch game plan for the day.  The team executed better than I have seen over the past year and thus far this year.  When the Dutch are on, they are tough to beat and they were definitely on Saturday.  Kudos to the Kohawks, they played well too.  The first quarter was dead even and the offense seamed to give the QB a lot of time until late in the game when I think the conditioning just started wearing down.  Was hoping for the first shutout in a long while, but you did a nice job of blowing that for us.  I was worried about the passing game of the Kohawks and thankfully we only got burned for a score once.

Props also to David Zachary and Jeremy Snead for having tremendous games.  Jeremy was catching nearly everything and David did some good power running.  I think DZ is the most improved player on the team.  Also nice to see both Nate Snead and Zach Bandow doing another fine job at QB.  The defensive effort was also outstanding on Saturday.  Great job by one and all of executing a game plan.

But you left out a tiny detail in that it was the Wartburg football coach's house he was roofing the summer before the last minute transfer.   :o

Dubuque Telegraph-Herald has a write up from this weekends UD and Loras games.

One editing error is it had Cornell as 0-4 on the season instead of 1-3.  Need to catch those.

Few things have produced more unintentional comedy than a couple years back when I got to a Loras game early and they were going through whatever animal sound effects CD they have in the PA booth trying to find the hawk sound.  There were roosters crowing, cows mooing, pigs oinking...you name it, it was on that CD, and apparently was earlier on it than the hawk.
