"FWIW, I have never said Z's impact would be immediate.  That would be giving too little credit to the other solid programs in the IIAC."

Dutch, what part of that suggests this WIAC guy thinks Z's impact will be immediate or that football in Iowa is desolate of talent?

All signed up for the 5K Saturday morning.

Have my beer and brat tent tickets as well.

Looking forward to the parade too.

Quick shout out to Terry Tesar, Kevin Murray and the late Mark Meyer who are being honored for being part of the Coe Wrestling teams Midwest Conference Championship of 1989.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Coach Z is so tough, when he does a push up, instead of pushing himself up, he pushes the earth down.

Coach Z destroyed the periodic table - he only recognizes the element of surprise.

Coach Z doesn't write play books, the words assemble themselves out of fear.

I love you WIAC guys - I really do. It's cool that you all think so highly of Coach Z and his cababilities. You guys keep talking about the "immediate impact" he is going to have on football in the Iowa Conference. I'm starting to wonder if this is a compliment to his amazing football mind, or if it's because you think that football in Iowa is desolate and void of all talent....

UD, Loras, Cornell and Luther all have had Wisconsinites on their rosters as long as I have followed the IIAC. But some how, this year is different. To date, they have beat the same two teams that they beat last year. Rockford, ranked 234 out of 238, and maybe worse than that. And Cornell who hasn't won a conference game since 2005. To steal a moniker from one of our favorites-- SHOW ME!

Great one +k for that one.  Where has he or she been.  This season just has not been the same.  Last year every morning was getting up with anticipation to what whopper Show me was going to tell that day.  I am longing for the good ole days I guess.

As far as UD turning it around, IMHO unless they can win the IIAC I don't think they will have turned it around.  I think they had a coach there that would have kept them competitive with the conference.  Coach B would have had some rebuilding years but I think he could have kept them in the middle to upper end of the conference.  If UD does not win the IIAC IMHO they only traded coaches.  This is not a slap at either coach (Coach B or Coach Z).  I just think that UD had a coach that had the program at the level they are now.  So IMHO turning it around at UD means championships.  Doolittle do you agree? or am I all wet?

Dubuque is so two weeks ago.  I am on to worrying about Cornell.  This week looks to me like a classic "Trap Game."  In last year's game, Central needed a timely holding call to get to over-time.  They are coming off of a homecoming win against undefeated Coe and they could be looking ahead to the next week's revenge game against the loathsome Simpson Storm.  I have come to expect Central to have a big advantage in the kicking game.  Then I read on the Cornell site that their punter, "launched a 65-yard punt that was downed at the 3-yard line in the second quarter of last week's game."  Finally, I read that Cornell has a 5'9" 165 pound freshman quarter back.  Those Doug Flutie type guys always make me nervous.  Yup, classic makings of a trap game.

Yes, I think Coach B would have had UD at a consistant middle of the road team with 1 or 2 years per decade maybe getting a conference championship for UD.  Coach B had finally built a team that was sticking around for 4 years and had a good thing going.  His problem was his 2007 senior class had all been multiple year starters.  You lose that and you were bound to have a rebuilding year last season.  I think Coach Z will be able to be at least as successfull as that scenario and maybe even a bit more consistantly near the top of the conference.  So in that regards, maybe he wouldn't be turning around the program.  I think what Coach Z has going for him is he runs an offense that our AD Runkle likes.  Old school smash mouth...though looking at our passing numbers so far that is debatable ;)  Also, with a focus on more local recruiting you have the possibility that these football players also bring in other kids from their high schools to come to UD.  Which would help our overall enrollment numbers.  That can't be overlooked as an advantage for Coach Z.   More local kids at school means more kids might stay in the area after graduating.  More kids staying in the tri-states after graduation means UD is more in the local conciousness and that brings in more kids to school.  Alumni money flows into the school.  Attendance at sporting events goes up.  And so on and so on.

I don't necessarily agree Coach B should have been let go, I think he was a good guy who was also a good coach.  In the end, I think Coach Z will be a step up.  Both for what he can do on as well as off the field at UD.

Um, so yeah, to turn things around for UD Coach Z probably needs to win some championships.  Which I think he can do.  Not all the time, but certainly once or twice per decade.  Something Coach B hadn't done...yet.  So there you go.

And, Cornell has a tight end, from California of all places, who is bigger than anyone on the whole Central defense.  I have a feeling it will take a lot of Heineken to get me through this one.
