If Cornell threw the ball as much to Heys he would be an All-American too.

Hey, I was pretty good back in my day... 8)  (no, seriously, I was...bigger, faster, and more physical than young Z, while playing for a soon to become defunct D2 program at Cal Poly Pomona)

But you probably meant Jr., though...he has a chance to get to 60 catches if he finishes big...that might give him a shot   ;)

I watched Zweifel's kid from a former receiver's perspective.  I think he's very good for the D3 level.  He runs very good routes and reads very well.  Sure they throw to him a lot (maybe even padding the stats a bit in blowouts after 2 so-so games)...but so would I until you took him away from me by defensive design.  Coe showed he can be defensed and even us Rams slowed him a bit.  I admire that he seems to work very hard on every play.

He can play on my team any day.

footballdaddy: I bleed orange & black as much as any Wartburg fan, but I can't let your earlier post go unchallenged.

RECEIVING        GP  No.  Yards   Avg   TD   Long   Avg/G
Matt Wickert      6   28    358     12.8   1    36       59.7

RECEIVING        GP  No.  Yards   Avg    TD   Long   Avg/G
Michael Zweifel   8   90    1130   12.6   12   46      141.2

This illustrates my point. If Wartburg threw at Wickert three times as much,he'd have similar stats to Zweifel. The same for Gustafson.

By that argument - you could take ANY two guys who have the same YPC average and say "but if player B had as many catches as player A, they'd have similar stats".

And in this case - even if you did TRIPLE Wickert's stats - he'd only have 3 TDs, compared to Zweifel's 12...big difference.

I haven't seen Wartburg play, but I have a hard time believing that Wickert is in the same league as Zweifel.  If he was, he'd have much more gaudy numbers than he does.  It's not like he's on a run first team like Central.  He's on Wartburg, with the pre-season league MVP Yordi at QB in a pass-first offense.

I have seen Zweifel play, and that kid is an absolute stud.  His hands are INCREDIBLE, probably the best I've seen in covering the IIAC for 9 years.

Not to brag...OK, OK...actually meaning to brag...since a coach can forcefeed the ball to his own kid...According to my calculations from the NCAA.org site prior to this past weekend's games, Jr. led all NCAA Tight Ends, in total receptions with 40.  Follow me here...That's all receivers, listed as Tight End, in all divisions, listed in the Top 100 in the receptions/game metric in each respective division.

He's out there battling and all his hard work is evident by his performance to date and I look forward to him finishing strong

I find that pretty cool and I'm proud to inform.   :)

Spurrier

i would rather the spartan conversation gathered around wins than stats. . .hence the great passing combination of the the 90's that went 0-fer. .
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

footballdaddy

Way to go Mr. Macey! He deserves all honors he gets.

There haven't been a lot of wins for spartan nation since spurrier was hauling in receptions...way back in the day when we had some red in our uniforms as well ;)

Cincy/Hawkeye matchup in the NC game...who you got???

I stand by what I said. The offense is built around him. The plays are designed to get him open. He's the first option every pass. He'll be an All-American, and he will deserve it. But he'll get it just as much for the system as for his abilities. If Cornell threw the ball as much to Heys he would be an All-American too.

I thought Dubuque had a pretty balanced offense when Central played them.  If Zweifel wasn't hurting us, Spaulding was.  I don't think it is fair to say it is just because his dad is the coach.  Not saying it doesn't help, but IMHO, you throw the most to your best receiver and he seems to be it for Dubuque.  Not many teams have been able to stop him, so why not build your offense around him?

Spurrier

please. . . mr doolittle. . .who do you think i would have. . .plus i'm originally from indiana not iowa

Way to go, Jr.  We posters are all proud of you!  It helps that we like your dad!   ;D

I'm not pimping Wickert. Take his name out and insert any other top 10 receiver in the conference, and I'll make the same argument.

The circumstances just don't allow for a true apples to apples comparison.

Every team's offense is built different, staffed different, and has different objectives to achieving success.

I think the real facts are that good players are good players regardless where they play.

Zweifel's kid had an astounding year last year NOT playing for Poppa.  The kid has skill and you take advantage of that skill.

At Cornell, we'd love to have a player like Wickert...no roofing jobs in MV, though.   ;)

Cornell needs to think outside of the box...if there are no roofing jobs in MV, then cheerleaders with morally casual attitudes tend to work well with young men in their late teens, early 20's!!!  Though, as a faith based college associated with the Methodist church...perhaps that wouldn't be the way to go in the Rams recruitment practices ;)

Mr. Ypsi

PH,

MV houses have no roofs?!  I had no idea! :o ;D
