"Grand Valley State:
Our sources tell us that Brian Rock (Purdue Wide Receivers), Matt Mitchell (Grand Valley State Defensive Coordinator) and Lance Leipold (Wisconsin-
Whitewater Head Coach) have interviewed for the Head Coach vacancy.  On December 26, FootballCoachScoop was the FIRST TO REPORT that Matt
Mitchell, Grand Valley State Defensive Coordinator, will be replacing Chuck Martin as Head Coach."

Mitchell was the DC at Wartburg when I was there and is married to the AD's daughter at GVSU.
If Leipold gets the job does that mean UD will be looking for a new coach?

This is the reason a lot of Whitewater fans wanted Zweifel.  They knew Leipold was using this job as a stepping stone to a bigger opportunity and would likely be gone within a few years...like Chizek at ISU, just with a lot more success.  Zweifel would have been at Whitewater until he retired.

I really hope Zweifel sticks around UD.  He is getting things in Dubuque working the right way and I want to see that continue.  2 of his kids are attending UD.  I think he ends up sticking around.

I wouldn't put a lot of stake in the fact that two of Z's kids go to UD. I'm sure they get free tuition like other college employee's kids and they can live at home if they choose. The fact that he showed inprovement at UD may be just what Whitewater is looking for, especially if they think he will stay forever.

Seriously? I don't think there was a lot of discussion around here of Leipold at all. They wanted Zweifel because they knew who he was and he was an insider.

riiigght...b/c zweifel has had what...3 coaching positions in the past 3-4 years. I trust Leipold just as much as Zweifel.

This might make for interesting reading -- the days just before and just after Leipold was hired, as told through the WIAC message board.

If anyone wants to know what the difference is between winning ugly and losing ugly, just watch a replay of the ISU/Minnesotam Insight bowl.

Congrats to the Cyclones for knowing the difference.

I'm not sure Coach Z would be given serious consideration (even at UW-W) right now until he proves himself at UD.  Its been 25 years since he last was a head coach (Yankton) and a 5-5 record in his first season as head coach at UD leaves more time to show what he can do in the next few years.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I not only think he would be given consideration but I think if Leopold got the job, Coach Z would get a call before the day is done. I know footballdaddy thinks we "praise" Coach Z a lot but it is for good reason. He could without a doubt continue what Leopold accomplished in his tenure. Afterall, he was very instrumental in building the program to it's current status in the first place.

Being selfish, I hope he Leopold isn't offered the job so we don't have to worry about it. Or if he is, and UWW wants Coach Z, he turns them down because of his commitment to UD. I know being in a position to win a national championship is special but to take the spartans back to dominance and winning and IIAC championship, going to the playoffs, and doing the unthinkable (at this point) of taking the spartans to a national championship game, now, that is what people write books and make movies about...... and I think that is the way he would prefer to end his coaching career. And an even better story line..... Spartans beating UWW in a playoff or national championship game.

The facilities are in place, the foundation has been laid, the coaching staff is in place, anything can happen if you believe  ;)

If Leipold gets the GVSU job (and we might know as early as Tuesday), and that's a big IF, the only Coach Z getting a phone call would be UWW's current Offensive Coordinator Coach Z (Zebrowski). Just my opinion, but the chances of your Coach Z standing a chance of returning to UWW would rank somewhere between slim and none. He's had the door slammed in his face once, do you really think that 3 years and 4 jobs later, it would be opened to him again? I don't think you guys have to worry about losing him, at least not to Whitewater.

I don't think it's so much the moving around in the last 3 years for Zweifel.  I think it's a case of he burned some big bridges when he left the program.

Zweifel would have been a great hire at UWW 3 years ago.  I think he would have had the same success that Liepold has had.  Now, I think it's too late for him to go back.  His time there has passed.

Now it's time to build a program at UD.  And hopefully when he does leave he has it set up to continue after his tenure.

How about Fred Jackson today?  212 yards, 1,000 for the season.  Not bad for a back-up running back from a Division III School huh?

Not bad for perseverance either.  Mr. Jackson stuck it out through arena ball and europe and then used patience once he was with the Bills and is now reaping the rewards.  Good for him.  I love seeing these kinds of stories.

How did he wind up at Coe in the first place???

If I remember correctly (And I could be wrong  ;), The former coach (can't remember is name  ??? at coe that came from Mt Union recruited him in his first or early years of taking over the program. That, and a lot of financial aid "roofing" bonuses  ;D

Regardless, he was fun to watch then and I, also, love his story and appreciate his work ethic and perservereance. If he keeps this up, someone will be making a movie about him I am sure......

I think there was some kind of Coe connection at his high school in Texas. I don't remember correctly but I think one of his HS coaches was a Coe alum or former coach.

This is correct...I believe there is a actual write-up on this whole story, but his high school coach was a Coe alum I beleive and that is how Freddy learned of Coe, plus I beleive he wanted to play with his brother in college as well.  Then after having a wonderful college career, his high school coach also had connections with Marv Levy who helped him get into the NFL.  If I remember right, he was a backup RB in high school as well.

I also got NFL Madden 2010 over christmas and have been playing with Freddy quite a bit.  He is actually rated 82 in the game while Lynch is rated 84 or something like that, which is pretty cool.
