Wartburg 2010 schedule released

http://www.go-knights.net/cms/Article.aspx?ID=4108

A home game against Midwest Conference power Monmouth College of Illinois opens the 2010 Wartburg College football schedule Saturday, Sept. 4. The game against the Fighting Scots, which brings the curtain up on the 75th season of Knights football, will be under the lights of Walston-Hoover Stadium at 7 p.m.

The remaining four home games on the 2010 calendar include Iowa Conference contests against Cornell College of Mount Vernon Sept. 18, Loras College of Dubuque Sept. 25, the University of Dubuque Oct. 23 and Luther College of Decorah Oct. 30. All but the Homecoming game against Dubuque have a 1 p.m. start. The Knights-Spartans clash kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

Head coach Rick Willis' squad will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., for non-conference play on Sept. 11. Their conference road slate features games at Buena Vista University of Storm Lake Oct. 9, Coe College of Cedar Rapids Oct. 16, Central College of Pella Nov. 6, and Simpson College of Indianola Nov. 13. All road games begin at 1 p.m.

The Jack Ohle revenge game.  I guess that probably means that Captain Jack will return to Waverly on 9/10/11.  Mark your calendars now.

Got it marked.......I will be gone.  Not a JackO fan.
Will the orange blazer or da' Wartbug make the trip?

Something tells me the Orange blazer is available for $3 at Trinkets and Togs right now.  As for the Wartbug, I imagine they sold that off.  I've seen a very similarly hued Beetle here in Dubuque a couple times, except I'm not sure its a convertible like the Wartbug was.

Just so we don't go a full day without a post.

1. Would you rather...

A. See the IIAC drop to 8 teams?  And who would leave?

B. See the IIAC add a 10th team?  And who would it be?

C. See the IIAC move up to D2 as a conference?

D. I like things just the way they are.

2. What was your safety school if you had not been accepted to the school you attended?

Airborne Dutch

I would be intrigued by a 10th team but I don't know of any that could come in and be competitive right away. That being said, I liked D. For Question 2, Central was my safety school. I wanted to go to the University of Texas but I didn't get in.

It sounds like the Texas Longhorns are shopping around.  They could become the tenth IIAC team.  ;D

Just think of the mileage the Warthog mobile would add if the Longhorns joined our little conference ;D

So with the Big Ten thinking of adding a team out of their general geographical footprint.  Does anyone think the IIAC might add a team outside of the borders of Iowa somewhere off in the distant future???

Dubuque revised their schedule with some updated game times.  Home game against Rockford has a 7pm start.  Home game against Cornell has a 6pm start.  Home game against Simpson has a 4pm start.  Away game against UW-Platteville is listed as TBD (pm)

That's 4 night games for UD.  I know most schools have lighted fields, I just don't remember many teams playing more than maybe 1 game per year under the lights.  Have there been any recent years where a team in our conference played a few games under the lights?  I suppose if you spend the money on the lights you might as well play some night games and get some use out of them.  Besides hosting a couple of high school games every year.

Hopefully those start times mean I won't have too many Saturdays next fall where I am juggling watching UD and Hawkeye games at the same time.

I would like to see Upper Iowa come back.
I went to UNI, my safety school first and transferred to Central.  Just proves, if you don't go to the school of your choice you are more likely to transfer or drop out.

How's Coe's campus expansion proceeding?

It looks like its actaully going pretty well.  Below are a few links on what all has been bought by the college:

Loras released their 2010 schedule

http://www.duhawks.com/f/2010FBSchedule.php

Sept. 11 Rockford Away 1:00 PM
Sept. 18 Simpson Away 1:00 PM
Sept. 25 Wartburg Away 1:00 PM
Oct. 2 Buena Vista ROCK BOWL 1:00 PM
Oct. 9 Dubuque ROCK BOWL 6:00 PM
Oct. 16 OPEN N/A N/A
Oct. 23 Central Away 1:00 PM
Oct. 30 Coe Away 1:00 PM
Nov. 6 Cornell ROCK BOWL 1:00 PM
Nov. 13 Luther ROCK BOWL 1:00 PM

Elmhurst went 4-6 last season.
Rockford went 1-9 last season.

With Loras showing the UD game as a 6pm start, that now means Dubuque will play 5 night games next season :o

I believe that leaves just BVU and Simpson that haven't released their 2010 schedules yet.

for the first time in years, ud did not send a representative to the football recruiting fairs in florida. . .i find that most interesting. . .shame on vince for bringing all those florida kids to iowa. . .hope the spartans can get it done with local kids, but i suspect the best iowa kids will choose central and wartburg over ud; the best wisc kids will play in the wiac, seems to me the chicagoland area is the most furtile recruiting area left. . .that's where birmingham got them back in the day. . .
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

doolittledog

I agree that it is a shame that UD is not sending representatives to the recruiting fairs in Florida.  Florida is a talent rich area and a place I would would like for UD to keep a presence.  But, UD was still able to land some freshmen from Florida this past year, so maybe the current staff is just going about their business in a different way than the last coaching staff.

I also want UD to go after the Iowa, Wisky and Illinois markets.  I want a coaching staff that thinks they can get the best kids from each of these states and not just think that the WIAC and Central and Wartburg will automatically get the best kids.  There is no reason to think kids from our area won't think that UD is as good of an option as Central or Wartburg or any of the WIAC schools.  The UD campus is as nice as any out there and UD has some great academic programs now that are very competitive.

I can understand your bias. You live in Forida. The only thing I agree with is that there is definitely some talent in Florida. The best talent of course going to Div 1 schools but some such as Pierre Garcon and others either get overlooked or don't have the grades to get in and that is why they choose smaller colleges. There just isn't enough roster spots in Florida for all the kids that want to play football.

Having said that, I think you are way off base in the rest of your thought process. In my opinion, you will never sustain success in the Iowa Conference without local talent filling 75%-80% of your roster. Local talent to UD is Iowa, IL, WI.

It generates more support for the school and the program and puts a heck of a lot more fans in the seats on Saturdays! And as for where the best Iowa and Wisconsin kids will play.............a couple thoughts:

1.) You cannot beat the conference foes consistently unless you are willing to go head to head with them on the recruiting road.

2.) Top kids that the top schools are recruiting are choosing UD over the Wartburg's and Centrals and WIAC teams. You don't think the WIAC schools were recruiting Miles Hookstead aggressively?? Or Wyatt Hanus from South Tama?? Wartburg as all over him. There are others also. Sure, the new coaching staff lost some top recruits to our foes as well but it takes those small battles to win the bigger ones later.

3.) IL is definitely more fertile just based on pure numbers especially with the chicagoland area.

I had friends from CA, FL TX, and all over when I played at UD. I am still great friends with many of them today. However, we didn't win conference championships during those years either. Great friendships, yes. Great experience, yes. Conference Championships, no.

I think you need to take a trip back to campus sometime soon to see, hear, and experience everything for yourself. I fear you are basing your opinion of UD not being able to recruit against the centrals and wartburg on the past.

snoop dawg

Willie....just asking not being sarcastic.......so based upon your knowledge and experience would you recommend a kid from California not to go to an Iowa school to play football and get an education?  Are they accepted?  Especially if they are a transfer?  Thanks for your opinion.

One other thought to prove my point.

Mens Soccer does not recruit Florida and finished 2nd in the IIAC
Womens Soccer does not recruit Florida and finished 2nd in the IIAC and won the IIAC tourney
Wrestling does not recruit Florida and is 20th in the nation, had the best showing at the IIAC tourney ever, 2 IIAC champions and sending 3 to nationals
Mens Basketball does not recruit Florida and has experienced the most success it has seen since the Jon Davison years
Womens Basketball does not recruit Florida and is experiencing possibly the BEST season ever at UD.

Of course no all sports trophies yet but my point is, if the other programs can recruit mostly IA, IL, WI kids to fill their rosters and be successful, why can't football??? The fact is, they can do it and until it IS done, sustainable success will not be achieved. You have to recruit your backyard to be successful long term, plain and simple.
