I know now that I need to take my kids to a lot of UD games over the next few years.  After taking them to the Cornell/Loras game last fall, every time they see a game on TV now they ask me if I'm watching the Rams :o

A side benny of taking them to that Cornell/Loras game is they now think of Loras as the enemy...yea!!!

I think as long as we cheer on our children, we can wear any colors we want.  I'll think it's cool if my kids play any sport in college and will cheer them on wherever they end up (not Loras).  But I ultimately am a Spartan fan.  I'll quietly cheer for both schools whenever they meet up and hope each one has a successfull day.  Though my preference would be for them to go to UD and have as good a time there as I had.  Maybe not QUITE as good a time as I had there...I probably had too much fun way back in the day.

For someone who loves Spartan Blue and White ... I must confess that I wore the  red-and-white of the Lodi Flames in high school.  However, that is the only red-and-white to which I feel any loyalty!

Go Spartans!

Yes, thank you. I think loyalties at different levels. Of course wearing the colors of your high school, pro team, D1 college team, etc..

As an example, would a loyal hawkeye fan since birth wear the colors of a Badger if his son decided to go to school there?? I wouldn't. Maybe Doolittle would? That is just my opinion. As I said, I will love and support my children no matter where they go to college but I will choose not to wear "any" colors or "my" teams colors over the colors of a conference rival. Again, my opinion.

Just like I am cowboy fan and won't be caught dead wearing any Eagle stuff EVEN if I know someone playing on the team. I suppose it depends on HOW loyal you are to that team. I love Brett Farve and was routing like hell for him but won't wear that ugly purple and yellow crap  ;D But, I still was pulling for him and the vikings except when they played the cowboys.

Once again, I guess my writing is getting lost in the translation.  My love for UD is well known...just ask my wife, she thinks I over do it with our kids.  I am also a big Iowa fan.  Not only do I like the sports teams of those two schools, but I think you can get a great education at those schools as well.  I would LOVE for my kids to go to either of those schools.  My wife would probably accuse me of "nudging" our kids towards those two schools.

But, if for some reason they end up showing some athletic talent and end up at another IIAC institution (not Loras...that school doesn't have anything going for it that any other school around here couldn't provide)  I will have no problem going to their games and cheering them on and hoping they have as an enriching experiance in college as I had at UD.  You would probably find me wearing nuetral colors...or even blue and white(which is about half my wardrobe) but I would still be following them around Iowa and cheering them on.  When their school played UD, you would definately find me wearing Blue and White and cheering for my Spartans, but at the same time, I would want to see my child doing well and would be very happy for them if they had a good game...even if it was against my UD.

Cornell's OC, Coach Dicus, still has his work cut out for him with football but it looks like his daughter has adjusted well to the move to Iowa...

No kidding? I'm about as devout as they come when it comes to worshipping Dutch football, but I have t-shirts from other schools from around Iowa and around the nation....Wartburg, Luther, BV, Cornell, Linfield, PLU, SJU, and several others....one of the things I love about this level is the commradarrie amongst "rival" fans. I've been known to tailgate with the "other" team before the games and have a beer with them afterwards. I always wear red and white to the games, but I love swapping t-shirts with other fans afterwards. Some of this stuff keeps it fun.

I get what you are saying about loyalty to your school, but can you really say that you wouldn't support your son in the college of his choice? Ouch.

I do agree with you on one thing -- Favre does NOT look good in Purple and Gold, and I'll never sport those colors. :)

Please quote where I said I wouldn't support my son? I said I would support him NO MATTER where he went but would not wear the colors of a rival.

doolittledog

Willie, would you let your son back in the home at Thanksgiving if he kicked the winning FG in triple OT against UD a few weeks earlier?  Because even I might have trouble forgiving my son for that ;)

When I say my prayers tonight I'm remenbering to thank God I'm not Willie or Dolittle's kids. How petty can you be? When I say I support my kids, I support them 100%, no matter what their decisions are. If my daughter decided to go to Central or Iowa or Dubuque or wherever, instead of WB like her brother, I would have no problem wearing their colors at her events, regarless of my previous bias. It's all about my kids and not about me.

First of all, you do not know me and I am probably the most devote father there is. So, instead pray for forgiveness for that completely idiotic comment based on an ASSUMPTION that you think you know me or my relationship with my children. I also will support my children 100% and NEVER ONCE SAID I WOULD NOT and PLEASE, I  BEG of you to find a quote where I said I would not support my child no matter where he went to school???

However, I did say I would not wear the colors of a rival. That is my OPINION. If that means I just won't wear ANY colors or stick to the colors of my favorite school, that is OK. I would still be there in support of my children and that is my decision to make, not yours.

Get your facts straight jack before you start bringing God into this.

A friend of mine just returned from a business trip to Europe.  While there he took in some soccer matches.

Apparently there is some big deal soccer thing going on in Europe right now.  This morning at our breakfast group gathering he presented me with an orange & black Holland cap.  Apparently, like their Winter Olympics team, the Dutch Soccer team favors the colors of the Wartburg Knights.  So go ahead Central fans, be real Dutch, wear orange and black instead of tulip red.

Warthog,

I think I understand your point..... I also think it is different with every person and every situation. Let's say you and your family have been Hawkeye fans since birth, and your son went to ISU, it might be tough to swallow to put on an ISU shirt. However, if he went to Tennesse, maybe not as difficult because Iowa rarely plays tennessee.

Maybe I wouldn't feel so passionate about wearing the colors of another school if he went to SAU or morningside as an example. We don't hardly ever play them. But, a conference rival I feel differently about. I just find it hard to fathom wearing any conference team colors other then the Spartans. I just don't think I could do it. I would still (as I stated MANY times), support my children if they went to another school but that doesn't mean I have to sit in the stands with their t-shirts on.

Willie,

So if your son picked Central and was the starting quarterback, you wouldn't wear Red and White at a game?

If my son would decide to pull a Suckow and transfer to UD or BV or wherever, I would lose all my orange and wear where he was playing in a heartbeat.

Oh. and I don't know you and have never met you. I don't pretend to know you. I'm sure you are a great guy. But your feelings on this subject seem pretty clear to me, and it sounds just a little selfish.

Well here is my two cents worth on the supporting schools.  Having had a son play Tennis and graduate with a degree from Wartburg and having a son play football and earn a degree from Central I wear both colors proudly.  I support Dutch football and Wartburg tennis.  I watch the other sports with an interest but do not have a favorite school in the other sports unless there are kids I personally know participating for the team.  I am not that petty that I can not wear some colors or schools name.  If I had other kids that played for the other IIAC teams I would wear those colors too.  Being a Hawkeye fan, to directly to to Willies point if one of my kids got a scholarship from the Badgers and went there I would in a heart beat support the Badgers over the Hawks.  If the Hawks passed on my kid then they do not deserve to keep my loyalty.  That would be a hard one to choke on if it would be the Cyclones (thats for you Walston) but I would even convert to being a Cyclone fan if my kid had played there.  What would have been hard is if my four sons had all played the same sport and all played for different IIAC schools.  Then what son do you support?  I am just glad that I never had to make that decision or had that problem.

Another question to ask is...How involved are the parents and kids in the recruiting at the D3 level?  A lot of kids at the D3 level are diamonds in the rough.  Kids with talent that have been over looked for various reasons.  Most D3 schools won't have huge recruiting budgets.  How much of it is parents and kids making themselves known to the different D3 schools out there, vs. coaching staffs having relationships with high school coaching staffs and identifying talent that way...as well as admissions and coaching staffs working together to find kids and bring them in?

And another question might be...If child A has an 18 ACT and a 2.2 high school GPA but has a dad with Joe Chlapaty type money, does he get in to school ahead of child B that has an 18 ACT and a 2.2 GPA but comes from a poor family and would require a boat load of finantial aid to make it work?

Also, do schools have set admissions standards?  Is there a certain GPA or ACT score a kid must have?  Or does it really come down to a case by case basis for each child?

My understanding for Central and Wartburg is that you get so much finacial aid based off of the ACT scores and your GPA.  If you meet the minimum admission requirements you get in but the FA is based on the ACT scores and GPA.
