Wartburg NEW OC - Matt Wheeler

"Wheeler served at North Carolina Wesleyan for the past six years, with the last two as an assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. North Carolina Wesleyan competed in the NCAA Division III playoffs during the 2007 and 2009 seasons after just starting their football program in 2004. The past three years, the Bishops outscored their opponents 1,064 to 676 and have led nearly every offensive category in the USA South Conference. "

Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Not football related.  But the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald has a nice write up for Wartburg pitcher Billy Schmitt and the no hitter he threw last weekend.

Nice to see D3 sports getting coverage in our papers.

It appears the Knights made a good decision on the OC position.  Wheeler has had a good run out at NC Wesleyan.

It is interesting to observe how these coaches at various stops are intertwined with one another.  It reminds me of a hillbilly family reunion where everybody has the same DNA.

Next time the UNI Panthers win a game or two in the NCAA tournament, I would recommend Ben J. take his team to a remote fishing cabin up by International Falls, Minnesota.  Perhaps up there they will be far enough away from civilization that they won't be able to read current magazines, get on the internet, watch television, or listen to radio. Then they wouldn't know how good they are and they might continue to play smart, team work basketball.

Sports Illistrated cover jinx strikes again!!!

It appears the Wartburg women will probably take the all-sports trophy since they will probably do OK in softball and track.  The guys might not have a lead that is quite so safe.  What colleges have multiple strong spring teams that might finish high enough in IIAC standings to help catch the Knights for the all-sports trophy?  Is it likely another college will capture the Hertel trophy for the first time in many years?

I guess we will never know what "might have been" ... but as an alum of the UNI graduate school, I can't take anything away from what they accomplished this year.  Also, regardless of how anyone thinks the Panthers played at Michigan State, I have enough respect for Tom Izzo's coaching ability to know that his teams will never be outcoached ... and sometimes they over-achieve.  But they may be nearing the end of the run for this year.

Mr. Consistancy award goes to Central.  At least 1 conference title in 8 straight decades.  Silver medal to Wartburg for at least 1 title  in 5 of the last 6 decades.  Honorable Mention to Simpson for titles in 6 of the 9 decades of conference play.  And to Luther for at least 1 title in 5 straight decades in the earlier years of the conference.

Where is Lorass  ???

I know Cornell isn't listed but I believe they have only been in the conference since 97 or 98?

How many years has Lorass played in the IIAC with no titles?

Sure, UD has had a few dismal decades with exception of a few years but at least we can claim to have been the BEST also. Must suck to have never been the best.

Most Central fans know the Dutch football legacy well....but it's always nice to see it in black and white. Thanks Double D for posting it again.  ;D

Your next list should include playoff appearances and national titles..... just a suggestion, in case you are looking for more research topics. :)

Geez where have I been? Not paying attention to sports really, that's where. WHat's going on everybody? Reader's digest version of the last 4 months?

About the same.

Central = good

Wartburg = Bad

Everyone else = Ready to challenge for conference championship
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."
