DBQ1965

No QBs with non-traditional numbers that I recall from my days.

One press box story goes back to August, 1970.  Chalmers Field had its old, wooden and rickety press box replaced with a two-story (state-of-the-art for those days) press box that summer.  We lived in University housing next to Chalmers Field (corner of McCormick and Bennett, now a parking lot) and students were moving in for the Fall semester.  One early evening a tornado moved through the area and its damage included lifting the brand new press box off the top of the home stands and depositing it as a pile of lumber right in the center of the field.  I still have a photo of that somewhere around here.  Because the home opener wasn't far off, we had to do with hastily put-together make-shift press box for that season.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I suppose UIU could argue it's better to be a bottom feeder in D2 than a bottom feeder in D3  :-\

I talked to a Peacock fan recently and he told me they knew they would never be able to compete against the other Iowa D3 schools so they figured being the only D2 school in the state would be a good move.  And he felt overall it was a good move, even if the results hadn't shown that as of yet.

(Feb. 3, 2010) - The Upper Iowa University football team and coaching staff led by Head Coach Tom Shea announced its class of recruits for the 2010 season today. The class includes committments from twenty-six student-athletes to attend Upper Iowa and compete for the 2010 Peacock football team. The group of twenty-six includes seventeen that signed National Letters of Intent and nine student-athletes that have signed acceptance letters to Upper Iowa University.
(May 27, 2010) - After gaining commitments from twenty-six student-athletes on signing day, Feb. 3, the Peacocks now have a total of forty-six recruits ready to wear the Peacock Blue in August. The new group of twenty include two that signed National Letters of Intent and eighteen student-athletes that signed acceptance letters to Upper Iowa University

So based on the two item above from the UIU web-site, they have 46 new football players coming in this fall.  19 signed letters of intent and 27 sign acceptance letters.  So does this mean 19 are getting some sort of athletic scholarship and the other 27 are not? This D2 thing seems confusing.

The conference UIU belongs to allows 24 football scholarships.  The NCAA allows you to divide those 24 scholarships among 85 players.  Those 19 that signed letters of intent I believe are receiving some sort of athletic scholarship...probably in the $1,000 range and then the school loads them up on additional finantial aid like you do in D3.  As those kids progress through school, their athletic scholarship will rise depending on their playing time.  Those other kids it would seem, are going in strinctly like they would if UIU were D3.  Strangly enough, you often find D3 schools can offer a better finantial package than D2 schools.  But, you often find kids that get blinded by an offer of a "scholarship".

I was reading up on the World Cup.  The English press are blaming their tie with the US on the fact that their goalie recently got his heart broken when his girlfriend left him.  The Spanish are blaming their loss to Switzerland because their goalies girlfriend, who is a member of the Spanish press, was standing right behind the goal during their game and she was distracting him.

Has anyone heard of women problems effecting an IIAC team in the past?

A QB strangely throws five interceptions and later you find out his girlfriend left him the night before for a member of the pep band ;D

A RB is running for a TD when he unknowingly runs out of bounds five yards short of the goal line...and you later find out he was looking at his girlfriend waving at hime from the sidelines???

This could be a real advantage for Luther.  Unlike the eight other IIAC teams, it is unlikely Luther players would ever have girl friend problems.

Problems with significant others - yes.  Problems with girl friends - no.

Nicely played, warthog :D

I suppose you could also add another question.

Have the big uglies on the line ever been too distracted to carry out their blocking assignments because of the smell of bacon, beer, and other goodies wafting in from the warthog tailgate???

Some trivia:

Watching the Big10 Network tonight and they had highlights of the '53 football season (MSU and Illinois co-champs) ... and several quarterbacks had "non-traditional" QB numbers on their jerseys.

Anyone recall any IIAC QB whose number wasn't in the 1-19 range?
Central's QB in 1974 when they won the National Championship was #22 - Gary Cutler.

Central's QB in 1988 when they finished second in the nation was #87 Lance Kooiker, of course that was after Steve Flynn and Greg Thomas got injured.  But it was weird to see 87, at QB.

PBS does a story calling Dubuque "'quintessential city of the future"

Use that in your recruiting brochures UD!!!

Play football for UD, get a degree, and stay and live in the quintenssential city of the future.  Plenty of high tech jobs with Fortune 500 companies right here.

Also nice to see a short shot of the UD campus.  It probably helps that the Mayor of Dubuque is a UD employee ;)

Even though the weather wasn't very cooperative, Mrs. Warthog and I had a nice time last night at a wedding reception.  I saw some members of the Knights 1999 undefeated IIAC championship team.  It looks like some could still play a few quarters.  I have to give them credit, they bulked down, not up.  I know Walston Hoover and Little Warthog did the same thing.  How about the rest of you O-Line, D-Line, and Linebacker types?  In a purely unscientific study it seems the grunts get smaller and the headliners get bigger after their playing days are over.
