Awkward, huh?  Well, guess it is time to let the cat out of the bag.  I don't think AZD found it so awkward since the opinion is coming from a woman.  It is just a well deserved compliment on having a beautiful wife.  But I could see where it would be awkward if I were a man.   ;D

Geez, now I know what "coming out" must feel like.   :D :D :D

Ha! Too funny...I retract my previous, uninformed comment

The problem with getting 4A players into D3 is that they seem to think any non-scholarship program is "beneath" them. The attitude seems to be that if you don't get recruited by Iowa you can go slumming at Iowa State or UNI if you're desparate. Also for those 4A players that do go IIAC, many feel that they are better and should be playing right away. They don't want to accept that there are 100 players just as good as they are and don't want to accept a reduced role. Maybe since more 4A players are getting into the conference and report back about the quality of football, there will be an even bigger presence. I still think that the backbone of D3 is the small school player.

Interesting problem regarding the large school players. I don't think that's the case in the MIAC, where I think we are consistently getting 4A and 5A players. I wonder if it has something to do with location. Most MIAC schools are either in the Twin Cities, within 30 minutes of the cities or have a strong tradition to draw on (e.g. SJU).

That said, there are a lot of very quality small school players out there who have just never gotten noticed and at the end of the day, quality is quality, regardless of where a guy played HS ball at.

I appreciate the kind words or I should say that she does. I do have to admit that it took some ingenuity to get her to marry me. Some people are rude and call it trickery. I told her that the church was having a wedding dress fashion show and that the money was going to underprivileged kids. So I waited until the priest was standing in front of us and I leaned over and whispered into her ear....Do you like the idea of doing another charity event for the Special Olympics? and she said, Yes I Do! The rest is history....
(I thought I would try to turn it around just a little bit?)

Well the hard part as I see it is that you have kept her all these years.  It might be rude to call it trickery but if it works I say alls fair  ;D ;D ;D  Keeping her after her being able to see all of your tricks I'd say it must not have been all that much trickery since you are still together.   ;D ;D ;D

Comments on two items:

As to the big high school/little high school discussion: When Little Warthog was at Wartburg, the Knights had several players from 4A Iowa high schools. They were also blessed to have plenty of talented 3A-2A-1A high schoolers.  There were contributors to their successful run that had gone to all sizes of high schools.  Perhaps the 4A kids had less of an adjustment that first week of two-a-days their freshman year, but after the newcomers survived that, I'm not convinced players from any sized high school had an advantage over anyone else.

Just a thought: If the Knights finish the season as the IIAC 1st or 2nd place team, will Coach Willis finally get another richly deserved Coach of the Year Award?  He never seems to get it when the Knights finish 1st or 2nd in the years they are expected to finish that high.

Kudos to the IIAC page for getting to 2200!

Warthog,

To your question about COY.  If Wartburg finishes #1 undefeated I absolutely would think Coach Willis should get COY.  If they finish 2nd I think it goes to Coe again as it would mean Central is in 3rd and out of it.  The only reason I say Coe is that they did improve by 1 and go 10-0. I don't think there have been many Coe teams do that and as I have stated before you can't get better than that.

Evening kids!  You guys (and Dutchie) miss me?  Somehow I doubt it.

Got reading over the past few pages and wanted to clear something up about the Rose Bowl Rule in regard to determining the IIAC automatic qualifier.  Even in a three-way tie, the first tiebreaker in the IIAC is head-to-head.  So if Wartburg, Central, and Coe all finish 7-1 in conference play, but for instance Wartburg beat both Central and Coe, they would get the AQ, even if their loss came to the worst team in the conference.  But if the tied teams split their games against each other, the Rose Bowl Rule is used to eliminate one of the teams.  Since Central was last year's IIAC champion and received the conference's automatic qualifier, they would be eliminated and the head-to-head winner of the Wartburg-Coe game would go to the postseason.

As I remember it (and I could be wrong), the last time this scenario played out was in 2002, when Wartburg and Coe both got into the playoffs.

Now, onto new business.  Have you guys a done a roll call for the Wartburg-Coe game on Saturday yet?  I'm giving some serious thought to heading down to the game.  I'm interested to know who else will be on hand, as well as if the Coe folks have any suggestions on where to catch the 2nd half of the Hawkeye game after the Knights take care of business.

Dear Coach McMartin;

OMG ... I just got off the Iowa Department of Transportation road construction website and there is a dreadful amount of construction between Pella and Decorah.  http://511ia.org/default.asp I know that you're currently preocupied with other things and are probably a bit stressed about playing the Norse since they've given you problems over the past few years.  I have therefore taken it upon myself to assist you with your travel planning and am providing you with an alternate route free of detours.

Drive north out of Pella and get on I-80 East.
Take a right on Hwy 63 and take another right onto 55 at TurrelAR
You'll be on 55 for only 20 miles, so be prepared to take another right onto Hwy 78 just past the airport in Memphis I'd hate for you to miss a turn and have to drive extra.  ;D
Take Hwy 78 until you see the sign for Hwy 52 at CharlestonSC
Take U.S. Hwy 52 North to Decorah - EASY!

See you Saturday or not! Insert evil genius laughter and lightning / thunder claps here! ;)

P.S.  Luther will be on fall break this saturday, so the home crowd may be a little thin.  Sorry 'bout that.

Sportsknight,

I'm sure all the regulars will be there. The issue is where we will be tailgating. NewKnightDad is working on a space at a seller of adult beverages that is very close to the stadium. Hopefully he will post the particulars here today.

There are about 5 bars around Coe - most have deals during Iowa games, plus the newly added field house(s) - one by buffalo wild wings on blairs ferry and one down town across from bricks on 2nd ave se

Good luck to Coe this Saturday! Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the game; instead will be at the Iowa @ Michigan game in the Big House cheering on the Hawks, but will be checking on here for updates...so please help keep me informed  ;D

No offense bp, you are obviously a big fan of your team and put a lot of time into being a fan of the WIAC and d-3. But this is just plain silly. The only legitimate poll  (IMO) is right here on this web site. It already has 25 different levels. If one felt the need to break it into six groups, look at the number of points behind each team and the breaks between groups is pretty obvious. And with 25 voters across the country, one voters bias doesn't skew the results. The way you bounce teams in and out and up and down (especially WIAC teams) kind of flies in the face of your whole premise of grouping like teams together.

This scenario is impossible b/c Coe or Central would have at least 2 losses....Wartburg education.   ;D  If we are talking 6-2, then you are correct.

Been to the Fieldhouse before.  Only issue there is that it will probably be super packed by the time the Wartburg game wraps up.
