"Effect of NFL's big-hits policy? Scoring in Week 7 highest in 27 years"

"On the weekend the NFL cracked down on illegal hits, scoring soared.

NFL teams scored 52.6 points per game last weekend, the highest average weekend tally in 27 years.

It was the second-highest scoring weekend since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970."

Well everyone loves to see teams score, but is this the way to do it?

Personally, taking the human missile tackling technique out of the game is a good thing.

How many times do you see a guy launch himself and just bump off the guy, when a good, old-fashioned wrap your arms tackle would have stopped the ball carrier.  That drives me nuts.

Take away the Broncos playing like a bunch of slaps and it's a different story.

Congratulations to the Dutch!

Missed the game yesterday...work. Weren't there highlights of the games before in the past on Centrals website? I looked, but did not see?

Interesting calls during Friday's high school game....I and the announcers (televised) have never heard of one of the calls/rules before or the motion call that the ref showed before announcing the call.

Illegal block below the waist on the lead blocker was called on the defense. (called twice)

The ref, who looked to be experienced (older), had complete control of the game. We were just wondering if the refs at this level had a meeting to make sure all the rules were enforced.
Has anyone heard of this call before? I tried looking it up, but could not find.

As DF24k instructs the side of the ball is not specified.  Per Rule 2-17-1 the free blocking zone allows blocking below the waist as long as the offensive & defensive players are both on the line at the snap & in the zone.  The zone is 4 yards either side of the snap & 3 yards behind each line of scrimmage.

I saw this called on a defensive player (theirs) on an offensive player (ours) this past Friday and was actually surprised because it is so rarely called on a defensive player.

In this particular game our 235 pound fullback was leading the tailback and was outside that zone, and their 185 pound linebacker left his feet and dove straight at our fullback's knees, intending to take the blocker out but not play the ball.  I think the referee saw the lack of intent to make a play on the ball and engage in a dangerous manner (leaving his feet) was the basis.  I thought it was a good call.

Thanks to you also on explaining this penalty.

It caught me off guard when I heard the call. I recorded the game and the announcers were also wondering on the call. They slowed the play down in the replay and our player was not at the knees, but just below the waist. The refs called the same penalty three plays later. This was all in the beginning of the game. Seemed to me like the refs were setting the pace of the game.

I am definitely old-school on this:  Teach and emphasize good tackling technique, quit celebrating arcade game tackling styles that also have the higher possibility of permanent injury.

People talk about what a hard hitter, when as a coach I rather have an expert tackler.

I believe they said that there was 4 out of 1250 hits that week end that brought attention to this rule.
scoring - coincidence - possible
Let me tell you... If my wife was saying good bye to me while I was leaving for work and it went something like this...
Have a nice day at work and don't go screwing it up and costing us 100's of thousands of dollars$$$

In my never ending quest to champion UD and Dubuque in general.  I found this today.

Dubuque has been named "The best small city to raise a family"

I assume the study was done before East Dubuque changed their zoning laws for the downtown entertainment centers.  :'(

Next year Dubuque will probably be rated as just be another sleepy little mid-western city.

What do a quarter at the bottom of a toilet and a Luther cheerleader have in common?

Everybody sees them but nobody wants to pick them up.

Potty humor continued ...

What did the Wartburg D-lineman think when he saw that quarter sitting in the bottom of the toilet?

Get the quarter back, get the quarter back!

Two Wartburg football players were speeding down the highway at well over 100 MPH.
"Hey," asked the player at the wheel, "Any cops following us?"
The other player turned around and had a long look at the road behind them. "Yeah, looks like it."
    "Are his flashers on?"
The other player turned around again. Lemme see...
    "Yup...nope...yup...nope...yup...nope...yup..."

Just to get the Luther-Wartburg week started: They are selling t-shirts in the Wartburg bookstore saying "Luther went to Wartburg". If you don't get it, check your Lutheran church history. Not a real side splitter, but a little classier than the student Homecoming t-shirt.

As far as football is concerned, this is a scary three game stretch to end the season.  The temptation to overlook Luther is huge. Coming off of a statement game and with Central next week, it's easy to lose focus. If the Knights do that. the Norse will hand them their backsides. Luther has so much incentive to win this game. Wartburg can't take their foot off the gas. One game at a time is so important this week.

"Luther went to Wartburg" ... gotta be one of the great rivalry lines of all time.

LITTLE LATE IN CORRECTING

Yes, Luther did go to Wartburg but he was captured and forced to go.  There he suffered CONSTIPATION for a YEAR and was so embarrassed to be there that he didn't let anyone know he was there.  He also went under the name "Junker George" so his friends wouldn't know.

Obviously he wasn't proud of his stay.

Wartburg students should know the whole history.   :D :D ;)

Central has struggled on the road so I am anxious about the trip to Storm Lake.  The Central defense could have its hands full with the BV ground and air attack.  Then they have to worry about this

I will also confess that I have a bad case of mascot envy.  And the current beaver is even better than that old one in the boat.
