My freshman year at Wheaton College we had a JV game against Joliet Correctional.  Yes... no lie, no kidding!  A real version of the "Longest Yard", only it wasn't the guards against the inmates.

One of the endzones was only 6-7 yards deep as it was limited by the exterior wall to the prison.  Upon kicking an extra point after a TD, our kicker put it over the prison wall.  To which on of the inmates exclaimed "I'll get it".   ;D

Numerous stories I could tell about the game, but I don't want to blather on about it on your board.  Like the fact that several of the current coaches from Wheaton suited up for a couple of plays, including Coach Swider.

My son's last game was against the Yuma Criminals. The Yuma Criminals were escorted out to the field by a Yuma police car and the Yuma police officers. This was all done in jest of course. It was part of there celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the Yuma Territorial Prison.
The main gates to the football field were the original gates to the prison. If they scored a point of any kind, the sirens would go off. It was the same siren used during a prison break. The baseball fields "stands" were the blocks stacked were the prisoners used to sit during their yard time.

I have found a bit of the puzzle for the UD non-con portion of their 2011 football schedule.

Dubuque has played Platteville the 2nd week of the season the past 2 years.  They take a 1 year break in 2011 and then start back up with Platteville in 2012.

I found this from the Anderson University website...http://ravengridiron.com/Schedule.htm

They show they are playing @ "Dubuque College" September 10th 2011.  I am going to guess they mean UD.  Anderson University is in Indiana and plays in the HCAC.  They finished 3-7 last season.

Dubuque concluded a 4 year contract with Rockford College this past year so I guess Dubuque will start off on the road next season.

Walston Hoover,

Congrats on a great win for the Maroons.  One of the most entertaining HS games I have watched in a long time.  You guys had them right where you wanted them at all times didn't you?   ;D ;D ;D

I can't argue with any of those selections. Congratulations to all the all-conference players. You all have earned the honors and the Seniors on the list will be missed.

I think a quarter of the selections are a joke. Especially when you get into some of the second team and honorable mention categories. Politics or a$$ kissing if you ask me.

WH, congrats on winning a very exciting game. I bet they playoffs aged the coaching staff ten years! The Maroons showed a great never-say-die atitude. Congrats to Iowa City High who gave it all. my heart went out to their quarterback. He probably feels like he lost the game but he has nothing to be ashamed of. He left it all on the field.

My Madrid Tigers did not fare so well. They were on the other end of a back and forth game. They're kind of like the Buffalo Bills, a lot of championship appearances but only one win.

Good Luck to the Kohawks and the Knights today.  Would love to see a rematch next Saturday in Waverly!

WH congrats!! I question the IC choice not punting the ball late in the game. BIG, BIG turning pt.
GOOD LUCK KNIGHTS!!!!

Congrats to Coe on an outstanding season.  Great game in Wheaton.

A game of momentum swings. Really impressed with the Coe QB - Boyle.  Cool customer who puts the ball right on the numbers.

I thought Wheaton was really in trouble, behind 21-9 with 5 minutes left in 3rd quarter.  The only mistake Boyle made all day, the INT in the 3rd quarter is the start of 22 staight points by Wheaton.

Fourth double-digit deficit Wheaton has comeback from in 2nd half this season - giving me an ulcer.   :-\

Not a good day.  Both IIAC teams went down.

Congrats to Wartburg on a solid season.

10-1 is nothing to be ashamed of...

Good game Wartburg. Always fun to have a playoff rematch and the IIAC/MIAC history always makes these games a fun rivalry.

It was a physical battle in Waverly today. Your guys played very hard and it was a great, clean game penalty wise. Your punter had some really nice boots. And can we borrow your kicker  ???

Without looking it up, do Coe and Wartburg return a lot of players next year? I remember a Dutch poster say Central was graduating quite a few quality players. Boyle's obviously back and has to be a favorite for POY, anyone else of note? And has their ever been a 3 time POY in the IIAC?

Again, nice games today.

Great game in Wheaton today. Brad Boyle is the real deal and Tyler Hemry came back and was studly. It was a game of momentum and could have gone either way. Coe will be loaded next year as they return Boyle, Kuehner and a total of 7 starters on offense and 7 more on defense, including Hemry. Good luck.

After the Wartburg/Bethal game we had an early dinner with Little Warthog's family, watched the end of the Iowa/Ohio State game and then headed home.  Traffic through Iowa City was terrible so our normal 2 1/4 hour trip took a little longer tonight.  I'd just like to echo the congratulations to the Knights and Kohawks for good seasons and wish Bethal the best for the rest of their playoff run.  The Bethal fans I met were really nice people.

I did get a kick out of the old van I saw at the Casey's store in Waverly after the game.  I'm not sure I would have driven that thing from Waterloo to Waverly.  It was loaded with a really nice bunch of Bethal students so apparently it made the trip from St. Paul area this morning.  As I was filling with fuel, kids started unpacking from the back of the van and it reminded me of the clowns you would see at the circus unloading from a VW.  I'm sure the Royals victory will make the trip home enjoyable, but there sure won't be excessive leg room for anyone.  I guess when I was 20 or so, I would have found it acceptable to ride four hours in a cramped van with a cute coed on my lap.

I would say Wartburg got beat by a better team today.  Whether Bethal would have been a better team every weekend all season long, I don't know.  They were today, so they move on and Wartburg closes out the season. Wartburg may have ended the 2010 season today, but I'm sure the 2011 season will start the day after the Knights return to campus after Thanksgiving.  There were many juniors and sophomores filling key positions for the Knights in the 2010 season.  If they devote the time in the weightroom that it takes to be a championship football team, I think they will be just fine in 2011.

In a short 9 1/2 months the Knights will be opening the 2011 season over in my neck of the woods against the Monmouth Fighting Scots.  Monmouth will have plenty to be playing for.  Mr. Taney will be back in the saddle as their quarterback and they will want to prove they are a team to be reckoned with.  Oh boy! 2011 should be fun.  Central and Coe at home.  Dubuque on the road so we can stop at Breitbachs for dinner after the game.  Luther on the road so we can watch Chris Norton lead the Norse onto the field and stop for a Gunderburger after the game.  Next season can't get here quick enough.

A tough day for the Knights. Not for any lack of effort, but Bethel definetly had an answer for our defense. I agree with the statement that Bethel was the better team today. I hope they have a successful run in the playoffs.

A shout out to Coe for a fine season also. The IIAC will be another interesting race next year.
