I strongly believe UWL made a good choice with the selection of Coach Detweiler.  He has a keen football mind and will do a great job recruiting.  I understand he is also a master of making half-time adjustments.  Best of luck to him and his family with their move to LaCrosse.

footballdaddy: I'm not sure what the enrollment at LaCrosse has to do with anything.  They are still both D3.  Moving from Wartburg to UWL in D3 football would be like moving from Green Bay to New York in the NFL.

Haven't spent much time around here since the season ended, but I wanted to share this story.

A girl I went to high school with played softball at Loras.  Somewhere along the line, she met and started dating Ike Hammerly, who was playing offensive line for Central at the time.  They ended up getting married a couple years ago, and have a young daughter.

Last week, they had a little boy.  They knew there would be complications with the birth, and there were.  Little Lincoln spent the majority of his short life at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and despite the best efforts of his doctors, just wasn't strong enough to pull through, and he passed away last Tuesday.

Lincoln's funeral is tonight in Newton.  The family is already at the church, and one of Lincoln's uncles posted this picture on Facebook:

I have to assume that Coach McMartin was behind getting the jersey made up and put into that frame.  As has been said here before, Jeff is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.  The evidence is really starting to stack up that he might be one of the best human beings on the planet.  I wish more people - not just coaches - were a little bit more like him.

Almost forgot...here's the link to Lincoln's obituary.

My Prayers for the whole entire family of Lincoln.
I truly believe that God has a special way of welcoming kids into Heaven.
I was just speaking this morning to someone about how much of a Blessing my kids are to me.
I have to always keep in mind that they are Gods children and when he asks for them,
I can only hope that it is not before he asks for me.
I will continue to Pray for comfort inside the hearts of Lincolns family.

So, in other words, a step down?!! ;)

Seriously, as a UWL graduate (M.S.), it's a great school and a really fun city. I enjoyed my time there. I wish him luck trying to get the Eagles back on the right track and back in the thick of things in the WIAC. He's got a big job on his hands.

So the Spartans are opening up on a Thursday night in Rock Island.  Will you be coming down for the game?  I'm thinking it might be a good night to hop across the river and catch the Spartans.

I hadn't even noticed that they are opening up on a Thursday night for the 2nd straight year.  I would love to make it down there, but with kids in school and both of us with jobs, I bet we won't be there.  We'll have to rely on your 1st hand account.

As far as Cornell/Dubuque and the MWC.  We all know Cornell has asked to go back home.  I haven't heard anything about UD.  WillieU is our inside man for that kind of info and he has been quiet of late.  Cornell mentioned wanting to play schools from Illinois and Wisconsin because they have a large alumni base in those states and they want to be associated with like minded schools from the ACM that are members of the MWC.  Dubuque would also have large alumni bases in Wisky and Illinois and recruit those states heavily.  I don't see Dubuque being an academic fit for the MWC.  That isn't a knock on the academics at UD.  The mission at UD is to find kids that are 1st generation college students and kids that have flown under the radar and give them a chance to find themselves and shine at this level.  Joe Chlapaty being a prime example of that.  MWC schools like Grinnell pride themselves on their selectiveness and only taking kids from the very top of their graduating classes and have top ACT scores.  I don't see those two philosophies as being compatable.  You can get a good education at both types of schools, but the Grinnells/Cornells of the world like to think of themselves a little differently than the Dubuques of this world.

Is KnightSlayer just stirring the pot???  Does he know something that others like 5WOL might also be aware of but aren't sharing???  Who knows.  For me, I would like to see UD stay in the conference that has been their home since 1928!!!

Nice post.  I would be shocked if Dubuque went MWC (even more shocked than MWC wanting them ;)).  And I know next to nothing about MWC, IIAC, or Dubuque. :P

There ARE different sorts of schools with different missions.  I taught my whole career at a school that sounds very much like Dubuque (though probably a lot cheaper! ;)) - Eastern Michigan.  We were always happy, of course, when we got students who could have gone to Harvard (and we got a few!), but mainly we had first-time-ever-at-any-college students.  One of my proudest memories is a student who was a 40-something professional singer (why she never made it big, I will never understand - she was fantastic!) who flunked statistics twice (once from another prof, once from me).  EMU had a 3 strikes, you're out policy.  Her third time something finally clicked - she didn't get an A+ ONLY because EMU didn't recognize such grades!  (I'd claim credit, since I worked many extra hours with her, except I also did that when she flunked her second time - SHE gets 100% of the credit.)

I get very short-tempered with posters who play the 'academics' card - there is a place for the 'elite' schools.  In my mind there is an even greater place in heaven for the schools that can take an underprepared student and make them a success.
