Vaguely IIAC related football story...

I was visiting the Broad Street Brewery friday (conveniently located across the street from my office) and the owner was telling a story about having previously lived in Mt. Vernon.  Cornell College came into the conversation when another customer mentioned that his family would go to football games at Coe and Cornell back in the 1970's when his brother played football at Grinnell.  He then asked if Grinnell still had a football team because with their laid back attitude towards football he had his doubts.  We asked him to tell us what he meant by that and he told us that his brother didn't play high school football but was a starting LB at Grinnell...while weighing 130lbs.  When the Grinnell offense was on the field his brother would come into the stands and sit with his family and join in on the conversation.

I suspect even back then the IIAC was a little more hard core than that of the MWC ;)

I lived in Grinnell 9-75 to 5-77 Grinnell College put a keg of beer in the stands to attract the students to the football games.  Not a bad Idea but nobody came to watch the game.

My boss in Grinnell was a former University of Iowa wrestler.  He had the distinction of being the only Senior Captain kicked off the Iowa team because he shacked up er slept through a meet.

He spent a couple of weeks at work studying for his wrestling officials test.  He passed and his first meet was a Marshalltown H.S. meet (I have no Idea how you get a varsity match your first year).  He was a nervous wreck before and after the match he said never again.  Too much preasure.  They talked him into doing a Grinnell College meet.  He did that meet an was very happy.  It was very laid back and nobody cared how he refereed.  He had found his niche in the world of wrestling officiating.

Grinnell has wrestling?

They did in the mid seventies.  I tried to find when they gave up the program but couldn't find a date.  They had a hall of fame inductee that wrestled in 56.

Me and the kid are planning on the first home game. I believe several others of the 2011 class are planning on it too. Email me so we can get everybody there.

Derek Jeter doesn't attend the All-Star game due to emotional and physical exhaustion?

I haven't seen a poll on here in awhile...

Would you give the Derek Jeter 3000 hit ball back?

*No
*No, because he's Derek Jeter.
*No, because he's a Yankee.
*Yes, because he's Derek Jeter.
*Yes, because he's a Yankee.
*Yes, for money!

Neither...I would have been too busy protecting my nachos and chili dog and beer from the scramble in front of me to have got my hands on that ball ;)

Maybe Jeter is still recovering from the gun shot wound suffered in the movie "The Other Guys?"  Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) shot Jeter in the movie.  This leads to a very funny exchange at the shooting support group.  Those with a semi-warped senses of humor would enjoy this movie.

Waldorf considers D3...

Before Waldorf became a for-profit school I was very much pro-Waldorf joining the IIAC.  Now, not so much.  They would probably be a better fit in the UMAC.  With Cornell leaving the IIAC, maybe I would consider Waldorf.  Maybe even a 2 for 1 deal...lose Cornell but gain Waldorf and Iowa Wesleyan :o

I would only give the ball back if the Yankees agreed to trade Mariano Rivera to the White Sox.

Or maybe I would trade the ball to Jeter for Minka Kelly and a supermodel to be named later.

I'd rather gain St Ambrose and Northwestern.  Solidify both the SE and NW part of the state.  Better yet add the two mentioned above along with Iowa Wesleyan and Morningside.  Have a 12 team conference with two divisions as discussed a month or so ago.

Week #1

Dubuque over Augustana  -  Spartans make a statement.

St. Olaf over Luther  -  MIAC takes two over the IIAC this week.

Wartburg over Monmouth  -    With Monmouth's quarterback returning for a fifth season, the Knights could be in trouble.  (Oranges oozing through my veins made this prediction.)

Hardin-Simmons over Coe  -  Simply took the home team on this one.  They both have good football programs.

Loras over Elmhurst  -  A middle over the pack IIAC team should beat a second division CCIW team.

Buena Vista over UW Platteville - The IIAC takes two from the WIAC this week.

Bethel over Simpson  -  Bethel is simply an excellent football team.

Central over UW OshKosh  -  Central should dominate on both sides of the ball.

Cornell over Olivet  -  Cornell gets their lone 2011 win.
